3:s: caliber player who projects as an OLB. 5:s: lacrosse player who committed to ND for lacrosse and will almost certainly walk-on to the football team. Basically the next Will Yeatman (hopefully minus underage drinking arrests...). Was receiving heavy interest as a 2013 from Ohio State, Michigan, and MAC schools.

Plays DE in high school... very athletic and has good football upside if he can bulk up without losing his speed.

Where is this being reported?

Would I lie to you?

Let me see if there is an article online. He's a lacrosse first guy with DI football talent... not a football player with lacrosse talent... so I doubt it's going to be picked up by your traditional recruiting services. He will not take up a football scholarship and will walk-on if he so chooses. He's basically an inverse Greg Pyke who is a Top 10 lacrosse talent but decided to be football-first and go to Georgia.

I am confused? If he plays both sports doesn't he take a scholarship from the sport that earns the most revenue?

Isn't that what we discussed with Arik Armstead? Otherwise could we throw a Tee Shepherd and give him a Chess scholarship and have him as a football Walk-On?

Please help me.

Oh, I don't doubt you. I just thought there would be an article for me to read, etc.

Brother Rice is a perennial football power in Michigan. Won the state title this year (2011) in the second highest division in the state. Plus its nice not to use a scholi up. Must be athletic to play both sports at a high level.

Only if he actually gets on the field.... similar situation to Will Yeatman. As I said, coming in as a lacrosse player but is an all-state football player who, from what I've heard, will walk-on

I don't understand what is so complicated here. Here is an athlete who is coming to ND and a la many players in the past may or may not be an actual impact player in football, but he'll almost 100% certainly be part of the team. Treat him like Joe Schmidt or Brian Cleary or Will Yeatman or whatever.

If I could just delete the profile. Sheesh.

EDIT: Also, as an addendum, many of the lacrosse players we recruit don't actually get a scholarship... or get a partial or something along those lines... so for all we know you could just consider him as a "walk-on" for both sports because I have literally no idea what kind of aid he is getting... just that he's a 3:s: quality football player who prefers to play lacrosse as his primary sport.

There's confusion over dual-sport athletes and when they become a "counter" for football. NDTampa (and many others) are under the impression that participating in team activities on any level makes them a "counter" if they're on scholarship for any sport, but that's not the case. Such players don't count until they actually see the field in a game.

Thank you for the info. Not trying to make things complicated just want to understand whats going on.

Watching his video, I think it would interesting to see him at DB - 6'4" and right now running a 4.7 ... looks very fast in the videos - hell - add another 20-30 pounds and play OLB...

Very quick off the ball, great size, room to bulk, long arms, seems like a good tackler. He's a lacrosse star, so he must be a pretty tough dude. Also, I like when guys can be good at different team sports. It adds another dimension to their game. They are usually very smart and natural athletes.
No doubt, sign him up.

Yeah man sorry if I was a bit snippy. Truth is I don't know all the specifics, just that he's coming to ND and is a legit football prospect. Got word from some guys today that he committed and thought I would pass along the news for those that were interested. Not really sure how it's all going to play out in the long run... but hey, a quality walk-on is better than no player at all :)

Revenue isn't part of the NCAA regulation despite how many times I've seen it posted. There is a NCAA Bylaw that deal with mutliple sport athletes. Basketball trumps the Olympic Sports and football trumps basketball in order of significance. Revenue has nothing to do it. The rule is the same for great basketball teams with crummy football teams.

There are other NCAA Bylaws defining a "recruit" and when "recruitment" begins. It starts with the first contact by the University. A student recruited in football (via mail, email, text, visits, etc) is a counter if you give him a scholarship in another sport or activity.

Shane Walton was a World Class Soccer player in HS. He was also an All-CIF CB but schools didn't bother recruiting him in football because of his outstanding soccer talent. He was gonna be a soccer player. Came to ND on a basketball scholarship and made 2nd Team Big East as a freshman. In the Spring of '99 he walk on and won a scholarhip. He neither played for ND in '98 NOR counted as he wasn't "recruited" per NCAA regs in football. This board wasn't in existed at the time but I created a profile for Walton on another site. I got an email during his recruiting season explaining that he would got to college on a soccer scholarhip but he wanted a shot to try out for football.

When he got the football scholarrship he became a football "counter" and if I recall correctly he dropped out of scoccer. Had Walton been recruited by ND in football, he would have been a counter in the Fall of '98

Not sure about Lacrosse but in baseball they give out partial scholarships as they only have 11 or 17( big difference between the 2 but this is going from memory and I am intoxicated.) to give out to the entire team. So some players get 25% or 17% or whatever to come up with the total of 17 or 11.

Which is why it is easy to transfer in baseball to other schools without sitting out.

Maybe it is the same in Lacrosse.

Either way, welcome aboard Sergio!!!!
