To be clear, I am a Brian Kelly supporter and think this was an appropriate move. But, I notice that every time someone makes a negative comment about Kelly a dozen people jump at the poster and tell them to go to NDNation. I'm curious, when will it be "okay" to criticize the coach without getting bashed? After year 3, year 5, never?

I don't think it's cool for someone to make a negative comment about Coach Kelly in a random thread, because that's trolling, but in a thread about him getting an extension it seems entirely fair to be opposed to the decision without the poster getting told to go away

Not when Brian Kelly has done a really, really good job. People need to be told when they're wrong.

What goes around, comes around............

If people want everyone else to respect their opinion, then they shouldn't come around with "this makes me sick to my stomach". If you say you disagree, and present a cogent argument, you'll be listened to.

Yeah, actually voice your opinion...an amateurish comment like the one given will get nothing but hate....

There are 16-10 coaches who I would extend, and 16-10 coaches on whom I would wait. There are probably no 16-10 coaches who I would fire. I might however set fire to a fanbase who wanted to.

The difference between the coach I'd extend and the coach I'd wait for more proof of, would be my assessment of how he's "building", rather than that 16-10 record. Is he recruiting avidly and at a high quality return? Do the players have the right attitude about competition and personal responsibility to improve themselves and succeed? Is there pride and no quit in them? Does he have a rational, even proven, plan? Do the people around him reflect his same professionalism and energy? Do the players respect him, even if they don't always agree wholeheartedly? Have they "bought in"?

Quite a few more such criteria questions doubtless can be invented. These are some of the major ones. To them, I give Coach a good-to-excellent response on every one. Apparently so does Swarbrick.

In the appropriate thread (like this one) how is "I feel sick to my stomach" any different than "I'm really happy right now." Neither presents any facts or any cogent arguments.

And I'm still curious. When will it be okay. After how many seasons?

It's OK to do so now. Just be prepared to provide a reasoned argument with it.

Negative posts are subject to stricter scrutiny around here than positive ones. The former present a greater risk for trolling and demagoguery than the latter, so in the interest of maintaining civil discourse, baselessly negative commentators are usually challenged to substantiate their pessimism or to take it elsewhere.

Fair enough. That's all I was looking for

This is a good assessment. However, I would probably have waited until after NSD to have extended him, assuming the class holds or improves.

So then to review, would losing control of bodily functions be equated with the negative, and therefore not be good?

In my many decades of experience, losing control of body functions is never good.

Harbaugh went 9-15 in his first two years. If they had fired him, where would Stanford be right now?

9-15 might be good enough for the Tree, but it's not good enough for ND!

Reps. That's an excellent analogy. So many similarities.

I like this. If ND needs one thing right now it's consistency. What we haven't had since Lou Holtz was picking at the grass in Notre Dame Stadium is consistency. Four new coaches in a decade in a half doesn't make for a BCS program. I'm confident Kelly has this program on its way up (look at how much better this team is than it was in Chuck's last year). I'm not ready to say I'm confident we'll get to a BCS bowl in the next year or two, but I do think if we stay the course and stick with Kelly we'll return to prominence. I just hope I get to be a student there when it happens (fingers crossed).

The way I see it, when Charlie was winning early in his tenure, he was winning with a high flying offense behind Willingham's recruits. IMO, a sh*tty defense being dragged through a season by a high-flying offense is a recipe for disaster, which is what Weis had going. I would much rather see my head coach steadily improving a team in the trenches, developing a soon-to-be-elite defense, and struggling with the offense than I would like to see a coach showing a lack of regard for the defense and focusing on the offense. Charlie Weis's team had major, major holes, and those holes were exposed in the BCS bowls he was blown out in. I would rather have this year's 8-5 team face an Alabama or LSU than I would have Charlie Weis's BCS bowl teams do the same.

I see real development being done by Kelly, and I'm glad he was extended

Meh. I don't really see the point, but I don't have a problem. As long as it isn't a Weis-sized extension.

Kelly hasn't yet proven to be a great gameday coach at ND, especially in regards to playcalling. However, he did prove to be just that in previous stops. What he is well onto his way of proving at ND is to be a great recruiter in high-need areas. I can't help but be optimistic at the prospect of allowing his recruits to become upperclassmen, and then trust that he and his staff will develop them just as they've done previously and bring all the talent to fruition on gameday. None of that is likely to happen without an extension, so to me it was a no-brainer.

This is fair as far as it highlights OM Mike's point about looking behind record numbers. But I'd note that no one is talking about firing him, just perhaps not extending him right now....I think it'd be nuts (assuming the team is performing moderately well on the field) to fire Kelly before he gets to show what a full set of his recruiting classes can do and we get to see the direction of the program per review of a number of key factors....

Are you kidding me? He has the best timing and use of the red faced yelling f- bomb dropping I have ever seen!

Just kidding! He's an awesome coach and I'm glad he'll be around awhile. A BCS bowl is in our future!!

The only thing that I've really seen "wrong" with Coach's game day decision-making is that he's trusted his players to execute simple things which they then inexplicably eff up when he's not out there always holding their hands. You can see it in his face [no, not the angry ones] when his entire countenance just deflates into a despair at what he just saw someone do. Coach has watched these guys do these things over and over again without the flaws in practice, and they seem to be able to do it. But along comes the game and ...

He will get these people toughened up mentally. He will get these people to an understanding of both the big picture and the details, so they are Zen Masters when execution demands. We're just almost there.... Tommy's savvy plus Everett's talent plus Andrew's physicality .... that hero is riding across the hill somewhere, and he might be already in house [Andrew or Everett, whichever gets the Gymrat Instincts fastest]. Kelly will look like a lot more of a genius when the talent on the field does exactly what the play asks them to do.

Good for recruiting, shows confidence in the direction of the program but at the same time... meh. Not sure that this couldn't have waited a year or two. There was 0 chance of him leaving, 0 chance of ND firing him, almost no talk amongst recruits that they were worried if he would be here or not. A contract extension is a powerful tool to use in building a program, but you only get to use it once every 5 years or so. I'm not sure this was the time.

I'm elated by the news. This will go a long way in helping develop a winning culture here. BK has what it takes to make it happen. All he needed was time.
