how long can he realistically play both sports in college. i know he loves both, but his body is only going to be able to take so much.

like one of the analysts said saturday, he's got 18 year old knees, so he thinks he can do it all. ill bet by the end of his sophomore year he'll have decided what to pursue, with football being the most economically sensible choice for him the way it looks.

How did Charley Ward play both sports in college for four years? If it gets to much for him, he may eventaully just chose one. Either way the school he picks wins.

agree. If he can do it, he will. If it hurts his NFL potential, he will stop, IMO.

Example, Julius Peppers. He didn't play all 4 years to focus on fball.

He can play either position but I wish he would accept that his future position in the NFL is LT where he would be ELITE. Not saying he wouldn't be a great NFL player at DT/DE but this kid is built like a monster LT

Couldn't agree more

think charlie ward got hit half as much as he's going to at whatever position he plays in college...the trenches are brutal and at the FBS level even more so.

He's a perfect fit for the traditional 3-4 DE... he's going to be damn near unmovable for most college linemen 1v1 and has excellent pro potential. He really does not fit a 4-3 defense at a #1 recruit level.

Golden Tate and Jeff Samardzija both played baseball...why is basketball different?

imo...basketball is a much more physically grueling game than baseball.

if guys like cecil fielder, david wells, and john kruk can play baseball it can't be that physically tough.

Those are first basemen except for Wells.

Tate played centerfield and Samardzija was in the rotation. Baseball is about a 65 game season, with a lot of double headers.

football in season starts late july, heads right into basketball that ends in march...that's roughly 8 months going balls out. idk that seems rough on the body and i don't think a defensive lineman would handle that for four years.

You may be right, that is a lot on a 300 pound defensive lineman. Hopefully we'll get a chance to see how it all plays out.

I just saw a lot of two sport comparisons to basketball, Charlie Ward, and wondered why people thought baseball was different.

How about Julius Peppers? Played basketball and football at the University of North Carolina.

Julius Peppers was/is a freak of nature....How many people other than him can you say played football and basketball at a high level in college and then were all pro at one of those?

I know Jimmy Graham is All Pro TE for New Orleans, and I think he played college basketball at Miami, Fl if not mistaken.

What defense does Cal run? Tks.

But he didn't play them both at the same time. He played 4 years of basketball, then stayed for a 5th year and played football for 1 year.

I was not aware of that fact. Thank you for enlightening me. Makes it all the more amazing that he is this fantastic of a TE playing only 1 year of college ball.

The only reason I knew was I heard an exchange, I think on Mike & Mike, where someone made a comment along the lines of "If you're a flameout 6'6" basketball player, make a go at it in football." I wonder if Ryan Humphries might have been a good one in this vein...but I digress as this is an Armstead thread.

Can we take all the multi sport athlete talk from this thread and all the Sinbad talk from the Fuller thread and start a new thread? Call it "Sinbad, story of a multi sport college comedian". then we can stop junking up the threads of the recruits w this stuff.

Now, back to Arik. He is a beast and I would love to have him in the rotation w Lynch, Tuitt, Nix, JJones, Day, KLM, possibly Armond and any of the other monsters we have amassed over this recruiting cycle and the last. Imagine a 4-3 alignment with Arik, Tuitt, Nix and Lynch w Manti, Ishaq and Niklas? Good lord that would be painful for the opposition.
