One more little thing about our Bobby D: We are lucky to have a young dynamic coach who is not ham-strung by the prejudices of the past [i.e. you only can play defense the old "tried-and-true" ways]. He will learn the things that he hasn't yet seen --- look how fast he was able to "get back to the office" after last year's Navy debacle and redesign things to prevent that from happening again [remember, it is not the number of total yards you give up against this kind of offense, but it's the making such offenses fight for every first down, as their numbers of moving parts are complicated enough that if they have to run too many plays, they string together some boners and penalties and stop themselves]. Diaco learned... quickly.
Also note how he recognized last year's upgrade when Brian Smith went to Will and we began getting side-to-side coverage and some pass defense there? He looked around for a possible replacement --- none readily available, but one guy looked perhaps serviceable. That's why we got Dan Fox. Fox wasn't great at it, but he occasionally did the job, and might even continue to evolve. Carlo's a good downhill run-stuffer but has probably reached his ceiling in space coverage.
Note how Diaco broke from all our IE "expert's" views about how you have to be massive, and put Slaughter in to cure outside contain problems. Note also that Slaughter did fine even against non-military teams and played there a lot vs FSU. Note also, that forced to try Prince at Dog due to his great athleticism and desire to get the best athletes on the field, he learned that Shembo, though trying heroically, just couldn't quite get there [literally]. So, back to Cat he went.
On a subtler note, Coach Diaco has once in a while tried the "mill-around" confusion, non-line-up pre-snap. Lots of DCs see this as a good mind-boggler when employed by surprise. It takes savvy aggressive defenders to do it, and when the guys get the whole system on cruise control, Diaco will use it more. The point of that is that our young DC is 21st century cutting edge.
