A lot of this is contained within the Recruiting List and Who's Likely Next? threads but I think it deserves consolidation to stop a lot of repeated questions/misinformation on this board. In the end, I hope this is informative and saves people time in routinely responding to the same questions like "when will Gunner decide?" Please feel free to add on and offer corrections/insight/opinions below.
---------------------------------------------------------
Notre Dame has (roughly speaking) 4 spots remaining in this class after the Gunner Kiel commitment. Amir Carlisle may not count against a scholarship next year from all reports because he was not released by USC, but right people seem to think he will be on scholarship for this year. This is a rough number because we have to make assumption on things like KLM, Cave, Slaughter, Goodman all getting 5th years, no transfers, medical hardship, etc. At this point in time, it appears that John Goodman may likely get a 5th year if we don't pick up another WR. So for argument's sake let's say we have 4 or 5 spots depending on if you assume John Goodman is coming back. With Darby gone, it appears ND will target at least 1 CB as a "need" right now and the rest are flexible to what the staff desires... and likely filled with 5th year guys at this point.

Guys We Currently Lead For (or otherwise should be the clubhouse favorites to get if we push for them)
No one.

Guys We Are Squarely in the Race For (does not mean in the slightest that we will or are expected to win the race... but means we have a legitimate shot to land these guys depending on how the next 6 weeks play out)
Davonte Neal - The do it all speedster from Arizona could play on either side of the ball, but because of his less than ideal height he currently projects as a dynamic slot player for the Irish. ND was lucky enough to get the first OV from Neal and he liked it a lot. It will likely come down to ND, Arizona and Ohio State for his services with Arizona/Ohio State having the edge.

Brian Poole - Parents love ND, kid loves Florida. Kelly & Co. continue to push hard and we have a chance to flip him. Basically considered an even race at this point, if Muschamp doesn't have a good in-home he could be Irish.

Guys We Have a Shot At (i.e. could hypothetically become part of this class but it would take a significant change of the status quo) - Writeups in this section will be brief and basically detail why we trail/what needs to change.
Nelson Agholor - Doesn't talk much to anyone, but we're in a 3 team race here with USC and Florida. ND probably trails at this point but Nelson's recruitment looks to drag out much longer. He will OV to USC in January and we should know more after that. With Schyler Miles out, our chances of landing Nelson are very low.... but they're a bit better now with Gunner Kiel enrolled.

Ronald Darby - Former Irish commit left for reasons no one really knows... but Mike Frank has strongly hinted it was because of a mistake our coaches made. Kelly did not get an in-home visit in and that means unless there is something really crazy afoot we have very little chance.

Thats a good write up you did there and I agree with all of it. Im thinking the late interest we have in Westerkamp is telling us that Payton is not coming to Notre Dame. I would like to see Westerkamp, Neal, and hopefully Agholor on board by signing day

Funny thing about Gunner is all 3 schools ND, Vandy and LSU fans all think they lead. This is a tough call.

Notre Dame has (roughly speaking) 7 spots remaining in this class. This is a rough number because we have to make assumption on things like KLM, Cave, Slaughter, Cwynar all getting 5th years, Jake Golic being medically cleared, Eifert staying, etc. But for argument's sake let's say we have 7 spots and IF we lose Eifert to the NFL we'd replace him with McNamara BUT keeping Eifert means no McNamara... making the spot total independent of Eifert's decision +/- a McNamara.

Guys We Currently Lead For (or otherwise should be the clubhouse favorites to get if we push for them)
Ronnie Stanley - This big fella from Vegas we have some clarity on. We know he really like his visit. We know we are one of 3 finalists. We know ND is recruiting him hard and will be visiting him 12/15. He looks to wrap up his recruitment sooner rather than later and probably won't take any more visits. This commitment will likely end tackle recruiting for the year, but we may still consider taking 1 more interior OL.

Gunner Kiel - An elite QB prospect who will likely be deciding between ND and Vandy with everyone else (including LSU) just being a hat on the table. We may not lead here, but reports are that we do. In my opinion, the big question is whether the staff wants to use a limited spot on a QB. To answer that, it appears that the staff is/was pushing for him very hard before this past weekend of OVs and will likely continue to do so. But nothing is for certain. Vandy and ND are both comparable distances from home. He could make a decision as early as this week (12/17) or as late as January 7th. So pay close attention for the next 3 weeks. Plans to EE.

Jordan Westerkamp - You have to read the tea leaves for this WR currently committed to Nebraska, but the bottom line is if he had an ND offer earlier he'd be Irish and not a Cornhusker. Nebraska coaches are visiting Thursday (12/15) to try desperately to guilt trip or otherwise pressure Jordan into not visiting this weekend. If Jordan makes his planned OV this weekend, expect him to be Irish. Jordan is capable of playing the slot and is a different receiver from the guys we currently have committed. This makes him valuable, because we don't really have a slot guy currently committed, with Chris Brown really being the only guy that could possibly play that spot. Think of him as a 6'1" Robby Toma with corresponding better athleticism/upside to match the increase in size. Great route runner, great hands, and (everyone's favorite over-used term) could be described as "quicker than fast." His ultimate projection would be a Wes Welker: sure-handed, great route runner who can eat up the middle of the field and be incredibly productive. Bet on a flip to the Irish if he visits and the staff pushes for him hard.

The big question and the one we are all dying to find out is...what was for dinner?

Can someone provide clarification on the RB situation? After KM chose Georgia, I've been wondering about the next move.

It's done for the year (most likely). We have Riddick, Atkinson, Wood, McDaniel, Roberson, and Mahone next year. Only guy we were even recently recruiting was Russell.

And we're recruiting him as a slot receiver.

RB is done. We'll have 5 scholarship players at the position for 2012, which isn't bad.

Then again, during Kelly's Radio Show today, Kelly said when they have all the pieces they really want, RB and Slot will be interchangeable so clearly they want a guy who can do both like Riddick.

Dan fox said he's coming back next year. Was this expected? Won't he be a fifth year?

Keivarae Russell is being recruited to do both. I think he goes to UW though.

Okay, thanks. I figured as much with Coach Kelly flirting with moving Theo back to his original position. It seemed like such a high priority position to fill, even with Mahone.

It was a joke. Foxy is a Junior, and he's also saved a year of eligibility. So not only will be back next year, but he'll likely get a 5th year beyond that as well.

How is the offensive line shaping up for the future? I haven't seen a whole lot of OL targeted this year and wasn't really following last year. How are the current freshmen and sophmore classes?

The offensive line was what has inspired hope in me. For the first time in eons, it seems, both lines were physical and effective. I would sleep best at night, Gunner or no Gunner, knowing that the cupboards are stocked up with some solid linemen.

We've got a solid 4:s: prospect in Taylor Decker and a 3:s: project in Mark Harrell.

We lead for 4:s: OT Ronnie Stanley, and ND recently made a great impression on 4:s: OG Josh Garnett. If we land either of those guys, 2012 will be a good year for OL recruits. If we land both, it will be huge.

I was just thrown off by the fact that he tweeted he would be back. Seems odd for a junior to say that.

Here's the exact tweet:

I've made my decision. I'm returning next year for the 2012 season. #dedication

He's poking fun at his fellow ILB Te'o's recent announcement. It's funny because he's not on anyone's draft board.

Solid. Thanks for the info. It'd be great to land three 4 stars in one cycle.
