NDinLA-- I'm a big Yankees fan...and this signing was HUGE. Perhaps his play will deteriorate when he's 39-41 years old, but he also could be closing in on some significant records by then.

I wish he signed with the Marlins.

Hell he might be 35 right now. I'm glad my Cardinals didn't throw blow their wad here. 25% of payroll on one guy is dangerous no matter what. 25% of payroll for 10 years is even more dangerous for a franchise. He may well be worth it for a few more years so they better make the most of it.

Wooly, I was literally getting ready to say the same thing. As a Cards fan, I feel the same way. I think he's got a few good years in the tank though. He's been playing nearly every game for the last 10 years though so it can't be too many.

Sure we are going to be paying an arm and a leg when he gets to be 38-42...HOWEVER, you know they are going to have him playing plenty of DH in his mid-30's...He may not be worth $25 million at that age, but he should still be plenty effective if only relied to swing the bat!

That's like $350mm of contracts. If they do that, they are signing a death certificate postdated for a few years from now.

The Yankees and Red Sox can spend that type of money because they have the revenues to support it.

If I was an Angels fan, I would not like my team destroying our future for a guy that is already past his peak of his career. Tell me, how are the Angels going to sign any of their up and coming farm system players or pick up enough quality pitching? The reality is that if they sign CJ Wilson, they wont have enough money to sign anyone else.

If you are an Angels fan, and like this, then you should read the history of middle market teams that spent like this. The Angels only made $217mm in revenue last year. I dont know what their operating expenses are, but adding another $25mm of payroll isn't exactly bolstering their balance sheet.

So if everything stays the same (not likely, but they aren't going to increase profits substantially) they would now take a $13mm loss for the next ten years.

I sure hope they have a revenue generating plan to make up for the fact that they just put their organization in the red for the next decade.

Move Berkman there until the Cards can either bring up a slugger through the minors or land one in free agency next year. I wouldn't invest in Fielder. Sign Beltran and a shortstop.

They obviously know what they are doing since they just upped Weaver, took on Wells contract, and signed Pujols and Wilson. Other things like Gary Mathews Jr. contract is off the books ($11 million) will take effect next year. They were paying for him even though he was on another team. There are other variables that you and I are not aware of too.

Thank God. I'm glad my Cubbies stayed the hell away from this. The Angels will hate this decision in about 5 years and they'll be stuck with it. The last thing the Cubs needed was another aging player with a huge contract (even if he is one of the greatest ever). Now I can only cross my fingers that they don't go after Fielder. Like someone already mentioned, thanks to Pujols, he just became even more inflated (if that's even possible - the dude is HUGE). Sorry Cards fans, you lost a good one. Sorry Angels fans, ten years is too long.*


*I have no problem at all w/ the amount of money guaranteed to Pujols, but tens years is insane for someone his age. Congrats to him for getting it done.
