ND ran a lot of pistol this weekend, it seemed to really help the rushing attack, especially with Jonas. What do you guys think abou ND using the pistol more?

Not that it matters, but I think the pistol is the future of college football. In shotgun the RB just starts too slowly (no down-hill get off), but under the center the QB can't as easily read the defense and be a read/running threat. The pistol, in theory, combines the best of both worlds.

If Tommy keeps developing and a play-caller at the line, ND could be very dangerous in the Pistol offense. On the other hand, if one of our "running" QBs developed that reading ability they could probably be even more dangerous..

^ my thoughts exactly, we also saw the offense moving at Oregon speed as of late, with as little as 15 seconds from end of play to next snap. i think the next step may come from a more mobile QB, the checkdown system would be greatly reduced and the read option would become a much more prominent part of the offense. as it is now though, expect to see a lot more pistol and a some fast offense in the coming weeks

Love it... seems like it combines the best of the shotgun and under center. Can't really see the downsides to it.

I loved how fast the offense was moving, regardless of formation. I don't care if it causes a few more sacks, if we're operating at that speed, the running game will gash the hell out of any defense.

When you run 80 plays whether running or passing, the opponent's defense has to run on all of them. With no time off while the offense doesn't a huddle. Every 15 or 25 seconds the ball gets snapped. It's like running wind sprints but somebody's hitting you and you're expected to make tackles, arm weary tackles.

Thoughts on the pistol? It's great.

Can't really see the downsides to it.

I personally don't think the read option is as effective for drawing a DE away from a QB keeper. I also would rather be in a more traditional shotgun formation with a RB on pass blocking schemes, only because he's closer to the LOS.

But yeah, the pistol is great for a guy like Jonas Gray.

I like it as a very rare formation that we use sometimes it is the best of both worlds. But I'd say our bigger running plays are out of normal shotgun formations. Also the pass blocking is easier out regular shotgun.

But as a formation we throw out once in a while it is not terrible

I like it.

If it works, use it. There is nothing I hate more than a stubborn offensive play caller. I'm looking at you Charlie Weis... cough* fade to Floyd cough*

pistol is great for a downhill running game, so that fits jonas perfectly...not a lot to do outside of inside/outside zone and power, but it's a physical running attack out of the spread that is the benefit of having a good o line. however, if we ever get a true running threat at the QB position this also allows the chance to run the option and zone read, like Nevada did with kapernick

The pistol doesn't really have the RB any deeper than he is in shotgun. The QB is just only 3 yards deep as opposed to 5.

Anything that is effective is fine by me. Personally, I liked seeing the rare two back set with Gray and Wood on the field. Compared Chucky W., I think Kelly does a nice job of mixing it up and dialing up good plays for the most part.

Agree but give Jonas Gray/Cierre Wood just a chance of a hole and these studs can do the rest. The pistol needs a QB that can run. Tommy is good but he doesnt run. See Kapernick. This o line could make the T formation look good.

I think with are backs it works . As we upgrade to a more mobile quarterback. Coach Kelly will bring out a few more packages that work. I understand we have floyd right now but love to see a true spread of several different recievers making impact.

The pistol does not need a running quarterback. Alabama runs the pistol as their main shotgun formation. It is easier for the qb to see the field yet it gives downfield running lanes

I personally do not like the two back set unless we are running the option because it limits the number of recievers if we are passing and if we are running it brings the defense inside the box

I do think though that these are both good change up formations but not as normal and productive as our normal formations

the read option isnt even in the playbook when Tommy is playing quarterback. Nevertheless tommy is still the best play maker we have right now at QB. The most popular player in town is always the backup QB and the grass is not always greener on the otherside....be happy that Nd will improve on last year and take another step in the right direction...
