What is the "uniform surprise"?

^dont get me wrong, some of the traditions of ND are important to the character of the university. things like the gold helmet are icons of Notre Dame, and things like putting emphasis on academics are one reason i like ND, however i do not think that ones main reason for notre dame is because they never change. as shamrock has said multiple times already, notre dame has historically been a trailblazer with things like green jerseys, TV contracts, and national scheduling. If anything, i think ND is going back to their roots with these changes. And its obvious the players and recruits like them, lets remember, these are 18 year olds from the ESPN generation, not 40 something alums from the pre-coed days.

With all of the blue turfs, red turfs, and gaudy uniforms out there, trailblazing would be NOT changing things. But, as I said, I don't have a problem with tasteful changes on occasion.

I like it. Maybe the hologram part is a bit too much, but I love the new shinier gold helmets and I love the shamrock. 1+1=2. Love the helmets.

But you know what matters at the end of the day? Not what we wear, but whether or not we win.

Created in partnership with adidas, the Shamrock Series helmets are covered in 24-carat gold leaf and feature green shamrocks on each side and a leprechaun decal on the back. Handcrafted with meticulous detail, the gold-leaf helmets combine Notre Dame's rich football heritage with the program's bright future. The helmets have been handcrafted by Troy Lee Designs of Corona, Calif.

The 24K gold leaf thing makes these a bit more interesting.

This is my favorite quote from the UND article.

"Notre Dame football has one of the most iconic looks in college football and to celebrate the Shamrock Series, our team wanted to create a special new element for their uniforms for Saturday's game," said Mark Daniels, director of football for adidas.

In other words, to celebrate ND's classic look, they're going to screw with it. WTF?

It will be interesting to see what the helmet looks like on TV, the two pictures released just look so different. The official UND picture is ok, but the other one is fugly.

It's a football uniform. It's cool that Adidas invests so much in ND. Recruits like the variation.

I don't know why people have such strong opinions about a one-time uniform.

Agree to an extent. It is just a one-time uni so the school should have fun with it, however if it looks bad it looks bad.

I don't really like the hunter green jerseys. My favorite green jerseys were the ones we wore against USC for the Bush Push game. It was the perfect shade of green. I don't know if it's the techfit jersey or just the shade, but I wasn't a big fan of the uniform against Army last year. I'm hoping this is a smokescreen and they bust out a sweet-looking green jersey.

Also, the new helmet design looks cool on the revo helmets (like in the und pic) but I have a feeling it will look really really ugly on the simple rounded helmets (like Tommy's).

So i'm confused... The article says we're wearing the same green jerseys as we did for the Army game last year... which were Kelly green.

Where is the idea that we're wearing forest (or "hunter") green coming from?

Well I'm not a Crayola engineer and I haven't had one of those 64-crayon packs in a while, but the Army jerseys were most certainly not Kelly green. I thought they were forest or hunter green.

The facemask looks awful on its own, but will probably mesh well with the jerseys. The 'holographic' helmet looks ostentatious in close-ups, but will probably look pretty damn cool on TV.

I was not immediately impressed, but there's every chance that the entire package will come together on game day. We shall see...

Agreed. Wearing an alternate uni for one game isn't going to taint the program.

78 pages and over eleven hundred posts on uniforms changes.

I wonder what the analytical psychology community would think about that?

My lips are sealed.

The facemask i thought matched the clover so the helmet is just green and gold...I agree tho waiting to see how they look...
i want to see the Green Throwbacks with this helmet...

You must be color blind. The shamrock and facemask are clearly not the same shade of green.

I'm going to be honest, never in a million years would I imagine to see so many full grown men argue about style and fashion in an online forum for football. lmao

I can't believe people are complaining about these helmets and once a year jersey variations when this has happened. I'm more embarrassed that this is a part of our past more than anything.

The green uniforms worn for the 2005 USC game are the hunter green uniforms.

They were worn in 2006 against Army, and again in 2010 against Army.

The reason why they looked a little brighter last year at Yankee Stadium has mostly to due with the game being at night and the stadium having a better lighting system than ND Stadium.

Prior to 2005, Notre Dame had never worn hunter green.

Kelly green was always the color before that. Of course we wore kelly green in 2007 and the UTL jerseys this year against UM used kelly green.

I don't know why we still use the hunter green. Especially with this new helmet having a kelly green shamrock and a hunter green facemask. Just all done poorly.

EDIT: Let me be more clear for the stickler's out there like me: Prior to 2005, we didn't always wear a true shade of kelly green, but it was never even close to the dark hunter green.

I said matched not same shade lol...
Green looks better than gray facemask gold helmet and a green shamrock i feel...

So you would rather have 3 shades of green on than the helmet we wore against Michigan? The facemask would go unnoticed if grey. But because they are making it green everyone is noticing that it is different from the shamrock, which IMO, and clearly others, looks terrible.
