'12 IN QB Gunner Kiel (Cincinnati Transfer)

Is he strong? Can he take a hit?

When he picked IU I don't remember many being too concerned here because of how good Golson is...

He's not as fast as Golson or Hendrix, but a good runner. Proabably a bit faster than Crist, who has enough speed to run the spread.

Crist was a 5:s:. Just saying. I haven't even watched Gunner's highlights, so I have no idea on him.

Should be a 4* with QB IQ being a deterrent. Still feel bad though as I keep looking at the 95 yard bomb to Rudolph against Michigan and think, what could have been.

I hate to keep making this comparison, because who knows if Gunner has half the football IQ of Andrew Luck, but he has a very similar build and level athleticism to the Stanford QB. He's fast enough to make plays with his legs but is definitely a pass-first guy.

He is exactly what Kelly wants for his offense. You couldn't tailor a better fit.

I don't think Gunner's much worse of an athlete than Hendrix. He looks fairly quick on tape and he basically runs the spread/read-option stuff Kelly wants to use.

Can he have Jake Plummer's hair and Doug Flutie's drop kick?

Gunner is the complete package and does have a high football IQ but he still has to reach his potential, a lot don't even come close other get close and become very good and the one's that do are special.

Those special one's aren't necessarily the freak potential prospects as those guys usually are high risk high reward and have a very slim chance of reaching there potential but when those guys do they are the Jim Brown's and the Micheal Jordan's.

The point I'm trying to make is that like Luck, Gunner has very good tools and not a longshot to come close to reaching his potential if he has the work ethic and has some luck a long the way.

Gunner has the tools and the IQ to be elite and that's a great start but what make's Luck, Luck is that it did come together because he mastered his set of tools with a great work ethic, toughness, coaching and a bit of luck.

I agree with the cautious comparisons to Luck

Seems like Gunner would be a prototypical spread QB

what's the latest news on our chances with him?

If all goes well i would be kind of surprised he didn't end up irish.

I agree.

His uncle was an Irish quarterback, he grew up a Notre Dame fan (..right?), he's from Indiana, and if he is even remotely cognizant of Notre Dame's QB situation he knows that the guy starting now is physically limited. How can he not end up at Notre Dame?

add a few more to the list:

* Coach Molnar's reputation with developing QBs.
* Pass happy offense.
* Would be the most talented QB on the depth chart as far as prep profile goes (consensus 5 star).
* Plethora of top 100/top 250 nationally ranked WRs to throw the ball to (Davaris Daniels, TJ Jones, Greenberry, Ferguson, etc.).

I do not care what other QBs we currently have on the roster, this kid is one we can't miss on. He is big and athletic yes, but the thing that stands out most to me on film is his lighting quick release and the velocity he gets on the ball with it. When you watch his mechanics on film, his arm action is short and quick and if you did not see the rest of the play past his release you would not know if it was a 7 yd crossing patter or a 50 yard vertical. Kids got the arm to make all the throws, no windup or extra effort needed. Add in that he can tuck it and pick up a first down, or at least be a threat to keep it on the read option and I'm sold. I have always liked him, but the more I see of him on film the more I am impressed.

Sorry to post on his thread with no news (I hate that too), but this guy might be our most important recruit. The most I think about it, the more I realize how important the QB is in BKs spread. Think about what we've had problems with this year. It's been QB play. You can be solid at every other group, but in BKs offense, if you don't have a good QB it really doesn't matter. This year we've dealt with inaccuracies (Crist), turnovers-galore (Rees), and about a dozen plays a game where Rees completely doesn't see the open guy. Not to mention, we have to play another QB (Hendrix) simply because Rees (best man for the job according to Kelly) can't run the ball to keep the defense honest (this offense needs a QB that can keep the ball at least twice per game to be functioning on all cylinders - See Dayne Crist vs. Michigan last year).

Kiel appears to have everything BK needs. Strong armed QB, fast enough to keep defense honest, accurate, and at least from what we know can read the defense very well. This guy would be a huge get, and if he were a junior on this team right now I have no doubt in my mind that we'd be undefeated. That's how important a guy like this is. As the saying goes, this guy needs to be at the top of our list!

Have to agree with you both.

5* QB's just don't fall off trees. Adding talent to a team is a very good thing. We see what a 3* with not much athletic abilty can do--and the ceiling that a lot can see. Go after a stud. I like the two young kids on the bench too. But, get the best you can in here.

How much press and attention would a guy get if he was the one that led ND back to prominence? Can you imagine how much press that would get? Our Defense is on its way, if you were a kid that was super confident in your QB ability ND is prime for the taking.

How much press did Brady get? A ton, and if we keep getting these stellar defensive recruits (and Darby, Jones, Day, and Tee) that side isn't going to pull a Claussen Defense on them. And getting these stud receivers to throw too!!

Gunner jump on board, the train is going in the right direction, just need that stud conductor.

Go Irish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMO, you recruit Gunner hard at this point. I've said it before, ND lives and dies by the QB play. Get him in, let him absorb the offense for a year. Spring practice will be intense with Rees (JR), Hendrix (So), Golson (FR), and Kiel (FR) eligibility-wise competing for the starting spot. That is a very interesting situation... a luxury compared to recent times.

He is most certainly a need. If Andrew or Everett are viewed (and we don't know that yet for sure) not be be able to unseat Tommy because of their inexperience maybe Gunner can with his inexperience.

Go Irish!

Yes I agree. The way our offense is built the QB has to be outstanding at running the offense. We need a QB who can run to be successful in this offense.

There is no question that Gunner would be awesome for this class and our future. The real question is, what will Woolybug do if he commits?

Tommy has looked good and bad at times this year. However, some of his "good times" was related mostly to Floyd. Once Floyd is gone, you need a QB that will be able to see the field and distribute to the open guy. Having seen Tommy the last three games in person, I am now convinved, more than ever, that we are serisouly hamstrung by not having a QB that can see the whole field. Guys are open all over the place and we can't get them the ball.
