This is terrible, I'm not a huge racing fan but I never understood how they stay safe anyways with there head that exposed.

I was at the INDY 500 and watched him win in 2005. It was Danika's first 500 and she had the lead with about 4 laps to go. Dan took the lead after she scraped the wall. It goes down as one of my favorite 500's ever.

He's been my favorite since my Dad got me into IndyCar fandom, lol. The fam goes every year to the 500 and Wheldon winning this year was absolutely crazy to see in person with the wreck on the last turn and everything. He was like a kid on Christmas, he was so excited. He was one of the best promoters of the sport and an all around fan favorite. A great driver to boot. 2-time Indy 500 Champion.

The race track in the sky got a hell of lot more competition today. So sad. RIP DW.

I grew up a huge fan of IndyCar racing. Got out of it when they split the driversand all the old names were gone and got harder to find news and broadcasts of them. Then a few years back I called a sports call in show and every caller got assigned a driver for their Indy 500 race contest. I got Dan Wheldon. I had not heard of him and had to look him up. Young up and coming guy that had a pretty good record so far.

I actually watched the race for the first time in years and cheered him on. That was his first Indy 500 win! I enjoyed IndyCar again and followed his exploits and loved it again. Danica was all the media cared about, but Dan, Dario, and Helio were the new generation of AJ, Johncock, and Mario.

I will miss seeing him out there...

At least he died doing what he loved -- not many people can say that. Very, very sad news.

Sad stuff. I didn't watch much IRL racing, but Dan was one of the few I liked. It's tough watching something like this live. I'll never forget the day Dale Earnhardt Sr. died.
