We get SCREWED by playing Michigan early

That is all. Over the last 2 years:

1. We lost to Denard led Michigan because Dayne Crist missed a half and, because the game was early in the year, we had no time to get our QBs acclimated. Tommy Rees threw an awful pick on his first pass and we played with NATE MONTANA for the remainder of the half. Denard also got banged up as the year went on and Michigan tanked.
2. We lost to Denard led Michigan, and once again Denard gets banged up ~half way into the season and the team goes to hell.

Michigan plays an unsustainable brand of football and if we just played them later on in the schedule it'd be a completely different game. Every single year they've tried this Denard-do-everything offense it has completely blown up as he picks up injuries. This year will be no different. Just so frustrating.

I feel you man. Except this year the only problem was turnover and simply turning our heads and we would have won. Im ecstatic because this horrible team has finally been exposed. And your right. They will tank. They will have a tough time going to Illinois and winning. Nebraska IS hands down a much better team. And OSU will show up for the game just bc those freaks hate scUM just as much as i do.

GO IRISH!!!

It is.. But if we pick him off at least twice, (like we should have) that game remains a blowout.. It is still extremely satisfying to see them lose. Although, the late slam on Denard was un-called for and real dirty.

He had it coming, that's what happens when you fake being a real quarterback.

I actually missed the play. Anyone got a link?

Though I understand the sentiment, it should not matter when we play Michigan. To point to Denard's health is to miss the point. Last year we should have had a serviceable quarterback and this year we imploded. It's both ridiculous and a sign of weakness to wish for a weaker team when it was our fault that we didn't beat the 'stronger' versions.

It's not like he scrambled and took a big, clean hit. The ball left his hand and two seconds later #44 has him wrapped up and slamming into the ground.. I don't like what Denard did to us either but slamming him late like that is a cowardly move..

LAX: Can't find a higlight vid yet but I'm sure it will be up on ESPN soon and that play will be on it, b/c it sent Denard to the sideline for good.

Truth be told. But I digress to and rejoice in the skunkbears' defeat.

I'm saying in general. He's not a real quarterback, i.e. you fake it and play the position like he does and you run the risk of getting slammed. It's football. The refs had ample opportunity to get a handle on this game, they neglected to anything early and let it build. MSU may have played dirty but they absolutely and postively punched scUM in the proverbial mouth. UM has gotten away with being a dirty program FOR-EV-ER. They always take cheap shots and always will. MSU just decided today at least, F the penalties, we're either going to hurt UM and beat them, or just hurt them.

Gary Gray did that to us, he choked in a big moment (over and over again), not that running back they have playing QB. He just threw the ball up. I dislike the fact that Robinson plays on a team that has to fake it to make it and they fold as the season goes on. He plays for scUM, so honestly I could care less about him or those bums. They graduate 62% of their FB players, Desmond Howard acts like he's King Tut every weekend, and they have gotten beat by MSU four straight years yet still act like they are better than them. MSU just decided, hey we are going to treat them like they have always treated us, with disdain and disrespect, and we're going to beat them. Plain and simple.

That does not make sense. Why, because Denard fakes being a QB, does he run the risk of being slammed more than any other player??? Doesn't every offensive player run the risk of being slammed by just stepping on the field?

My point is that 44s slam was extremely late and extremely un-called for. It would be the same point for any QB in the country. You don't seem to be making a relevant point.

I know MSU punched them in the mouth today and played better.. The refs DID penalize the late hit.. and every team is dirty to some extent.

That play was over the line.. It wasn't even a hit. It was a WWE move. That is my only point. Im ecstatic that UM lost.

You're going off on a tangent dude..

Everyone on here hates Michigan and everything to do with the program.

To blame our loss to Michigan on one player, leads me to believe that you formulate your ideas and statements through emotion only.. There were a lot more contributing factors than Gary Gray in that loss.

No I make sense, you play that position whether in college or the pros and you run the risk of getting slammed after the play, it happens all the time. It comes with the position, and being in that spot with huge DLs/DEs/LBs around you (including holding on to you) as the play has ended. It's happened to Manning, it's happened to Brady, it's happened to QBs everywhere. I never said it wasn't dirty or that it was "morally" the right thing to do. He got flagged, so obviously it was illegal, but it's not unlike scUM hasn't doesn't similar things to lesser opponents for years and years.

You play that position you run that risk.

Ok ok. I give. It wasn't just Gray, but he had a strong hand in it. Less TOs we probably don't lose but playing that bad of pass defense individually over and over and giving up TD after TD to your man, when the QB is merely throwing the ball sky high is unacceptable. Especially for a player who is much better than that. It's called choking. I'm not off on a tangent. You can say what you want. You pushed me to explain I did. You don't like the explanation, I'm sorry. I do enjoy your posts though.

And if it happened to our QB...would you be saying the same thing?

It was dirty. Shouldn't happen. No place in the game for that. No matter how out of position you believe their QB to be.

Anyone runs the risk of getting slammed at any offensive position.. I know that..

I can understand him "having it coming" if he's sacked with the ball in his hands and the defender slams him to the ground.. but to grab him wayyyy after he has released the ball and slam him down is cowardly.. he should not of "had that coming" to him.

WildMan - Correct, shouldn't have phrased it as he had it coming. Contextual factors considered, my use of those specific words make it sound as if I condone such actions. Which to the contrary I do not. But I do understand, after playing college ball that players get 'randy' especially in rivalry games and try "stretch the whistle", whether right or wrong. I think MSU's approach this game was more of "continue to disrespect us and we will continue to beat you and beat you up", this was more of my point, sorry I did not convey it with my normal clarity.

JayHawk - my post you quoted, stated my belief on the play as being dirty and a penalty. I also believe there's not room for it, but it does and will happen.

I can def agree with that.. It's frustrating to watch ND players do it but it's so high-energy down there sometimes you can't blame them..

It's just dissapointing to see someone play so dirty and then run on the sideline and get congratulated by his teammates for it.

But all in all...... F*ck Michigan, they got exposed!

I only played D3 and there were teams (specifically guys on those teams) that I wanted to hurt. When you work so hard to play, it is an emotional roller coaster during a game. Especially when guys are hitting you late first and punching, kicking, pinching, etc. in the piles. I will say though, when Gholston threw the punch, the linemen he hit was pushing his face-mask into the turf, from the back of his helmet while he was on the ground, which is one of the most disrespectful unwritten rules in playing football. That was a straight "we are going to try and hurt that guy" the next play we get against you move by the scUM lineman. It wasn't right that Gholston threw the punch, but the scUM lineman shouldn't have done what he did either, which by rule is also an unsportsmanlike penalty.

If they had played a cupcake as a warmup while we didn't perhaps but we played each other early. We had injuries, we had some bad bounces but we made more miscues including turnovers and blown coverages. We beat ourselves both years.

Gary Gray single handedly lost this game. Go back and look at the highlights. He gave up 90% of the big plays UM had on offense.
