Does the term Michigan Man annoy you as much as it does me?

I wrote a little rant about it here

I just saw something where Hoke, in between saying We are Michigan a 100 times, said Denard will get 10-15 carries a game.

I can not wait to play these guys, only a few weeks away!

I am annoyed by anything that is related to Michigan.

I agree with you though, beating the "Michigan Men" at the pig house this year at night will definitely be the most important game of the year for me too.

I'm in total agreement with this statement. USC and UM are the games I care most about.

Michigan should always be the most important...because usually we beat the 1st team on our schedule and the Michigan makes or breaks our season for the most part...we lose this game....the season looks to be long, win and we have momentum

I can't believe my high school scheduled our homecoming for this night. It's too early! It only gives us two weeks from the beginning of school to find a date and buy a bid. It's really just a load of bull.

Not to mention it's on the night of the game I'm second most excited for this season (not counting the National Championship...heh heh). I think what I'm going to do is DVR the game and try to get through the night without hearing ANYTHING about the game. At all. I mean, if someone tells me "hey, it's 17-10 in the 3rd quarter" I will freak out. I need to not know anything about anything that's going on, and I need to make it through the 3 hour long dance, and the ride home, and the after party without hearing anything about the game. Then I will get home and watch the game IN ITS ENTIRETY before going to bed. I don't care if I don't get to bed until 3 AM. it'll be worth it. Plus the Browns home opener is the next day, which I'm going to. That is going to be a hell of a weekend. But it all relies on no one telling me anything about the game.

I just know this plan is going to backfire. I just know it.

Could we ever term someone a "Notre Dame Man" if they grew up in California, coached at USC for 6 years, and then came to Notre Dame?

I hate the term. It's comical how they use it though... He will turn everything around because he is a Michigan man. Or richrod couldn't win because he wasn't one of us. They don't give any real reasoning other than this bogus term. Duche bags.

Ha! Well said. Rich Rod wasn't a Michigan man but, I think it was the douchey-ness that attracted Michigan to him.

RichRod was deemed by the Alumni to not be a Michigan Man and was never given the support. They all wanted Les Miles, or Harbaugh. The sad part about it though is that if Hoke continues his recruiting magic and can upcoach like he did at SDSU, then they will be proven right.

While I despise most everything about UM football and the phrase "Michigan Man", I'm glad Coach Chmeil was able to bring a resolution to the scene at hand. I absolutely give a pass for that situation especially for there being no loss of life, I didn't give a crap what he told him.

umm... yeah... of course, of course.... I guess. :)

I'm kidding, I do feel bad for Corwin's family and his struggles, and if the Michigan man comment saved his life then its great that it was used.

But when i read it was said i was just like WTF, can I please stop hearing this Michigan crap??

It reminded me of the ESPN "Roll Tide" commercial.

Michigan man annoys me about as much as RKG does since BK coined the term. As if we know a high schooler who lives 1,000 miles away and that we've never held a conversation with is a RKG. Some are just better at speaking in public.

Can't believe I'm admitting this, but I thought that "roll tide" commercial was great.

I don't hold other peoples' fandom of teams I don't like against them. I don't like 'Bama, but if I was from Alabama, or went to school there, I'm pretty sure I'd feel differently. I have to admit, their enthusiasm about their football team is pretty cool.

I guess you could say the same about Michigan, but there is a smugness associated with Michigan that is unrivaled and unbearable. They are singularly annoying with their "Michigan Man" nonsense. Go play in traffic, michigan men.

I loved the Roll Tide commercial. it was just using the the Michigan man thing in the middle of a tragedy reminded me of the roll tide espn thing.

I don't like Alabama, but you can't deny there fans are passionate. I hope to see a game in Tuscaloosa one day.

RKG is kind of annoying but it is not like I hear players and coaches saying it every other day. In fact it has been a while since I have heard kelly say it.

I know what you mean, but us fans take something like that and run with it. It's not as bad as Michigan man, I just find it kind of annoying.

Their Michigan Man stuff is nonsense. Bo wasn't a Michigan Man, he was an Ohio man. Their desire for a Michigan Man ruled out most of the good coaches in their last coaching search.

I don't understand their desire to go back to their Carr roots. They were always the bridesmaid, never the bride under that real Michigan Man. And got absolutely torched by spread offense quarterbacks.

It annoys others probably about as much as ND plays it's moral high-horse card. Sure, we have standards, but I'm sure other schools hold their kids even more accountable than we do. The only difference is ND plays at a higher level, gains greater exposure, etc. Not much different from Duke bball.

Right Kind of Guy.

It's Irish-speak for saying that every recruit is academically capable, hard working, and polite.

so you mean they probably only want the kid if they are a 3 star and a PERFECT discipline record over a 5 star with some discipline problems?

I don't think it's that cut and dry.
I think it's more of a willingness to succeed and be a productive member of the team and university. ND doesn't shun kids who have made mistakes, only those who they believe have not learned from them and are a risk to make more poor decisions.
There will always be exceptions but it is this thought process in recruiting that has for the most part kept us out of serious trouble.

This is why I believe we have harder academic standards for our recruits, smart kids usually make smart decisions, on and off the field.

I like that the Michigan Man thing has grown so public. A lot of you guys respond to stuff like this with your guts and knee-jerk reactions, and that's OK for just talking across the fence. But sometimes I believe that some of these things actually give US a competitive advantage.

How so?? "Michigan Man" is a made-up phony concept as everyone who can actually think knows. But if such a phony concept gets installed in an opponents' consciousness in a strong enough way that it begins to influence behaviors and decisions, it's bound to create more errors. What if things aren't quite up to snuff somewhere vis-a-vis Michigan in fan/alumni perceptions. AND they can begin bitching that someone's not a Michigan Man? Does that get someone fired faster and maybe prematurely? Does that pressure someone to cater his strategies more towards the perception of "Michigan Man" strategy [ex. more and more three yards and a cloud of dust while the future football world passes them by?] Does it bias a hiring process towards a "Michigan Man" when a better candidate is out there? Error begats error. Let our opponents invent all the errors they want. They should just be things that we smile at. And encourage.

When this stupidity is firmly established, OSU will begin a campaign about the "Michelin Man" picturing Michigan football players as rolls of blubber with sappy looks on their faces. And permeate the Ohio football factory High Schools with it. And when things go badly wrong in the football program [say the Terrell Pryor of Michigan shows up, or just the Tate Forcier] his picture with the subtitle "Michigan Man" will not have been worth the foolishness that invented the term.

I, by the way, am fairly sanguine about Michigan other than wanting to win 100% of our games with them. They ARE however making a foolish mistake pumping this illusion up. But go for it, guys! Hire the wrong coaches; fire the wrong coaches; develop the antiquated strategies --- feel good about yourselves until the whoopa$$in' starts.
