Mother ****er. We are just saying, "Here Michigan, here is a Top 5 NT. Free from your beloved rivals."

I do not like this, not one bit.

We better be getting Jones.

Like everybody else has said I'm sure the staff knows what its doing but we are signing a long snapper (when Cowart will still have another year of eligibility after this one) this year and passing on a top 100 player at a critical position. That doesn't make sense to me.

Especially when we have approximately 13 specialists on the roster already.:upset:

As other posters have said, so much can happen between now and February. Even if the staff likes Day more than Schutt, it would be nice to have Schutt as a plan B.

I think I can speak for everyone with this one:

Why can't we get Gunner to take this kid to Indiana with him? :(

Seriously, just relax guys--It's one guy. The staff has shown that they know how to work this recruiting thing.

This is the first time I have disagreed with a BK decision. On one hand, this does speak to the extreme confidence BK has in himself and his staff, and in which BK handles his business on the field and in recruiting. He obviously believes Day is a major get on the Dline, and has several plausible options at NG to choose from going forward already on the roster. However, if God forbid we strike out on DL next year, it will be very tough not to question turning down a top ten DT in August.

I'm trying to remind myself that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

We know just enough to be in WTF mode, but we can only speculate as to reasons why.

Oy, this sucks.

Day is projected a DE from all the reports I have read.
They see him as a NT/NG who in certain packages could move outside to take advantage of his pass rushing skills. So from the standpoint of him being an out and out NT/NG like Louis Nix there your right but they see him as a flex DL who can play both NT/NG and DE but that ideally his base position is at NT/NG.

Not sure how the staff turns down such a talent from out "backyard." We need quality depth ....this Jones thing better work out or we will be talking about this again in 2 years.!

So does this mean we're only taking TWO DL?? Day and Jones (presumably). Seriously, TWO defensive linemen?

That would make this decision even harder to understand. By all accounts, Schutt has more upside as a pure NT.

If the staff doesn't want or need a pure NT this cycle, then going with Day as a SDE/ DT swing guy makes sense. But if he truly projects as a 0-/3-tech, then I'm at a loss.

What. The. ****. BK, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? Are we seriously going to serve this kid to Michigan on a silver platter? You don't pass up on 5 star defensive lineman.

There was talk for a while that if it came to it, the staff would be comfortable with only taking 1 this year on the Dline after the haul last year and loading up on skill position guys this cycle.

... I'm at a loss.

Well, yeah. Anyone that is not confused by this situation please raise your hand.

I'm just trying to remind myself that just because I'm confused doesn't mean that the staff does not have a plan (clearly they do) or that their plan is not based on much more knowledge than I have (clearly it is).

You guys need to settle down. Anytime the staff offers a 3-star player because they evaluated him at a camp, we praise them for their evaluations and trust them over the recruiting services...

They decided against a 4-star (probably because we just landed another 4-star DL). Could we assume the staff didn't think Schutt was 4-star material? (Or whatever you want to call it if you don't like stars)

My first instinct was to trust in the staff, but the more I think about it, the more it bothers me:

(1) We have space for a LS to join our 5 current specialists, but no room for an elite DT?

(2) By turning Schutt away, he'll end up at Michigan, where we'll have to play against him every year.

(3) DL is arguably the most important unit on the field. Diaco likes to rotate his DL frequently to keep them fresh. Where's all this quality depth that justifies turning Schutt away!?

I could I just don't see it. I just have a tough time imagining why you would turn down this kind of talent.

Man...I say go after Schutt and have Jones come in as a two way prospect...considering half the scouting services beleive hehas the most upside at OT. But again what do I know...

EXACTLY! In a smallish class to begin with, I think I'd take Schutt over Daly.

There has to be much more to the story than what we know. As everyone has said, you just don't turn down a 4/5 star guy.

I can buy that the staff likes Day better, but by all accounts Schutt was right up there with him on our board.

As the guy who's always reminding us to be objective in how we consider recruits, surely you don't believe that. Has "sour grapes" written all over it.

Can we please stop saying we wanted Day over Schutt? I for one didn't have a preference. I know we're all expert talent evaluators on here, but I'll defer to the staff's judgement.

It sounds like the wanted Day/Jones over this guy, I'm sure it will make sense in time.

BK knows what he's doing.
