Don't get me wrong, I love Sheldon Day, but Tommy fills a very specific need for us and possesses a specific skill set. Day honestly seems more like a luxury player that can add great depth at DT or DE, than a need player like Schutt is as a NG/DT.

I think is reasonable and plausible, then it is obvious the staff is higher on Day (who knows by how much) than Schutt.

This.^

If the staff didn't prefer Day to Schutt, they wouldn't have given Day the ultimatum. I really wanted the full trio, but we have to remind ourselves that the staff is 100 x more knowledgeable about this situation than we are. I'll put my trust in their decision here.

Though God help us if Day decommits and Schutt isn't interested anymore...

So that would suggest that the Staff was higher on Day than Shutt. Damn I still think we could of taken both of them. Don't understand this logic- they play two different positions.

We can afford to take 3 DL since we do lose Johnson and Cwynar this year and Lewis-Moore next. IDK what Kelly is thinking but he's the coach and i'm not.

Not sure what to make of this. As with every time I am confused by a bit of recruiting news, I will defer to the staff. I would not have thought that we would turn down one of these three kids. They seem like the type you "make room" for. Still, Kelly has forgot more about recruiting since lunch than I know, so I will trust his judgment here.

This is totally plausible. It becomes more plausible if you think Jarron may have already pledged to ND (for once, a silent would make sense because he definitely still wants to take OVs and it would make no sense for him to switch to another soft verbal). So plausible.. yes. Sensible? **** NO. Take the freaking 4* DT and deal with the numbers later in the cycle. There are always transfers and other BS (i.e. Nick Taush anyone? He could leave at any second).

If Schutt ends up at Michigan I will flip a ****.

We only lose EJ this year. Cwynar and KLM will be back for 2012.

Unfortunately, Michigan seems like the most likely destination now if ND is truly not an option IMO.

My guess is that they really like Springmann at NG and therefore don't see a need just my 2 cents

I just don't understand why the staff would turn him down, it isn't every day that there are three 5 star guys (Scout) wanting to sign up. Isn't competition a good thing for a team?

I think this is a good guess. Hansen reported that Springmann is his big sleeper for this class based upon preliminary reports.

From what I understand is that Day was there #1 target at NT/NG. As for position uh no they do play the same position in there eyes as what one plays in HS means nothing. They were both NT/NG targets.

Jarron Jones is being recruited as a DE and not as a NT/NG. Though they do see him playing DT when they use 4-3 packages.

God dammit. He was my favorite DL this year. If this is true then I'm bummed.

Or Cwynar is ready to have a breakout year.

ISD is reporting Schutt's visit is officially off, and have confirmed that ND told Schutt there is no more room at DL.

If ND can finally start getting top DL that they've been missing out regularlyfor the last 15 years now then let's go back to the 4-3 and take Schutt and Day who will be great in the 3-4 but are still better suited for the 4-3 anyways.

Taken in combination with what people were reportedly saying on the Scout ND board about space for Jones, the I think we can reasonably assume the following:

1. the staff only planned to take two of the three DL/DT we have been talking about here

2. They preferred Day and Jones of those three

3. the staff thinks there are in VERY good position with Jones, as in silent or impending verbal

4. the staff projects either Jones or Day at NT, and also probably feels better about the current NT depth on the roster than some of us observing the program from the outside

I like Diaco's hybrid better than a pure 3-4 or 4-3. Still...

Day is projected a DE from all the reports I have read.

Like everybody else has said I'm sure the staff knows what its doing but we are signing a long snapper (when Cowart will still have another year of eligibility after this one) this year and passing on a top 100 player at a critical position. That doesn't make sense to me.
