So I went to the movies tonight for the first time in quite some time, and I came to the conclusion that people believe us to be as dumb as nails because since when did we need somebody telling us where the exits are, as if we can't see the signs ourselves, or that we need to turn off our phones during the movie, everybody knows that, and I know there are kids who won't anyway but I digress. What about the fact that they need to tell us to be quiet, or where the concessions are? I'm pretty sure I walked through the door and saw the concession stand. I'm not a complete moron and I'd like to think the rest of our citizens are smart enough to realize this. What the hell happened to us?

Modern day America seems to cater to the lowest common denominator.

Why do they have to tell us how to fasten the seatbelt on planes or that "hot" coffee is...well, HOT? If they don't explain stuff like that, someone will do something stupid and then sue.

We have a drive in, here in Dowagiac. It has a diner next door with car hop. Best butterscotch shakes EVER. We also have a really cheap theatre in Niles. I took my kids to see Cars 2 in 3D and I got 4 3D tickets, 4 small drinks, 2 med popcorns, and 2 boxes of candy and my total spent was $30.

And now that World War 2 is over, DST is no longer needed.

There is a drive-in down here in Texas. I am not sure the exact city because I just pass it on the way to Houston. But I don't know how big they normally are but when I drive by the screens look huge. I would estimate, at least two times bigger than a screen in a regular theatre. I've always wanted to go to it, but it is about an hour and a half away. Kind of senseless to drive that far to see a movie.

Reading this thread title, I thought this was a reference to the melees nationwide to get Harry Potter tickets.

I live about 2 miles away from a drive in.
They recently restored the screen.

I went a few years ago...
Ironman and Indiana Jones double feature.

Drive-ins are awesome because they're usually so cheap. You're under the stars and you get to see 2 movies (4 if you turn and look at the other screen too).

I wish the Sky-High Drive-In was back up and running. I'm afraid that Daylight Savings Time really killed their business (it stays light outside too long into the night to play many movies).

I have sworn off of the theater for movies here. The kids and the cell phones induce an urge to choke the life out of some jerk. So I wait for it to come either to the drive in or on ppv. Our drive in is way out in the sticks , they have to pipe the sunlight in. We just close the valve on the sun pipe around 9PM and they show a double feature for one great price and they have an awesome snack bar as well.

As an employee in the film exhibition industry (I work at a movie theatre), all of the directions on how to behave (cell phones, texting, etc.) and where things are (concessions, restrooms) are necessary evils. Not sure if you are indicting movie theatres or the people that frequent them. If I were ever to leave this line of work (doubtful), I would love to find an entertaining way to write a book about the interesting situations we deal with every day.

Don't write off all movie theatres. Those of us that are prideful of what we do still try to make it fun to go to the movies. Sorry you had a bad experience.

I apologize for making it seem like I blame the movie theatres for all of the problems. I completely understand the reasoning behind what movie theatres do, I'm just sickened that they have to do that. I would like to think that we aren't really that stupid or our kids really aren't that terrible in a theatre, but I know better. it's a little sad when we have to have our hands held for us everywhere. RIP common sense.

Still have drive-ins in CA, there are 3 near my house. As for exits, thats just a safety issue. Thats why they tell you on planes or why at work there is usually a map letting everyone know where the exits are in case of emergencies. The rest is because people are so self absorbed that if you don't tell them to shut the **** up they will take a phone call in a movie.

I hate going to the Movies because I always seem to sit in front of the Jackwagon that kicks the mother F*C*ing chair the entire movie. Then there is the others that leave their phone on. Then you have the person that talks...and makes comments the entire movie. AND now you know why I have my own theatre room.

I think this country as a whole has forgotten how to have some common courtesy for others.

I think common courtesy went out a long time ago. I went to the movies a few months ago and a guy had a full conversation for about 10 mins. During the movie, not the previews and you could hear every word he said. Kind of ridiculous. I still enjoy going to the movies but I go to Movie Tavern, which is where you can eat and watch a movie. So if someone is being rude I just mention it to the waiter/waitress and they either address the person or provide me with some compensation. I am a regular so they know I would not try to lie to get extra treatment. Got free movie tickets and food out of it so I am not complaining.

The only thing worse than how stupid we are thought to be is how stupid people actually are. Yes, it is insulting when you are treated like you can't possibly function without step-by-step instructions; then you go out and see firsthand how dumb and incapable most people truly are.

Also, I'd be a fan of just permanently moving the clocks forward and never turning them back. I don't get why we have to switch back and forth, but I hate when it gets dark at 4:30 in the winter and I love being able to play golf after work in the summer. I see no reason why we don't just go to DST fulltime, year round. This talk about the poor drive-in industry is the first time I've ever heard anyone argue in favor of early darkness. Personally, I think it sucks. I'd like to eliminate standard time.

I used to love going to the movies, but nowadays I don't go to too many for several reasons. The biggest thing for me is the cost of going nowadays. Taking a family of four to the movies has gotten so expensive! We're talking about 70-80 bucks by the time you purchase tickets, then popcorn and drinks. Then you of course have to go to dinner afterwards right? So add another 50-100 dollars on top of that. I have found that I can make my own popcorn and drink whatever I want in the privacy of my own home and save a ton of money doing it and have a good experience just the same. With an HD TV and Bose surround system, I find that the sound and picture are just as good as in a theater and I can do this without having to listen to rude people, being uncomfortable in the theater seats and do it for so much less money. I just think it's crazy for the prices of some movies these days. When I was a kid my best movie experiences were at the drive-ins. There was something special about doing that as a kid. I watched Star Wars, Grease, Jaws and so many others this way. It's kind of sad that the drive-ins aren't as popular as they once were. Nowadays it's just cheaper and easier to watch movies from the comfort of your own home.
