That's principally for two reasons they were taught that by their grandfathers who still hold a grudge and because they never saw the Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl Classic. The only Bama/ND game that is show in SECland is the '86 game where #2 ranked Bama beat ND in T'Town 28-10. That game is a staple on "The Greatest Games in Alabama History". I called the show and asked why they didn't play the Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl games, two of the greatest game in football history. Their response was, "We only show game that Alabama won".
Another reason was a book written about 5 years ago by a sportswriter who graduated from Alabama, "The Missing Ring: How Bear Bryant and the 1966 Alabama Crimson Tide Were Denied College Football's Most Elusive Prize"
He makes a case that George Wallace's segregation stand caused the "Eastern media" to vote for Notre Dame to punish the state of Alabama. Alabama had won back to back titles in '64 and '65 after winning in '61 as well. They were the preseason #1 team but by October Notre Dame and Michigan State move ahead of Alabama in the polls. ND and MSU met in the legendary 10-10 tie. Despite the tie, Bama didn't move ahead of either of them. The next week ND demolished the 10th ranked Trojans 51-0 with the second string QB (who was a diabetic) playing the whole game. The 1st string QB was knocked out early in the MSU game. That 51-0 win guaranteed a National Chamionship. In 1966 the Final Poll was take right after the regular season ended. Both the AP and UPI voted ND #1, MSU #2 and Alabama #3. Bama didn't move up on either ND or MSU despite being undefeated and untied. ND and MSU finished the season 10-1.
The author of the book make Parshegian the villain because he "let" the game end in a tie. From the author's viewpoint a coach that did that lacked honor "backing" into a championship. The author seems to forget that Bryant (who was his mentor) was the master of playing for a tie. He had 17 in his 38 year career. By comparison Paterno has 3 ties in 20 year and Bowden had 4 in 27 years before overtime was instituted. And Parshegian only had 6 ties in 24 years of coaching.
And for the record in 1965 the year before, Alabama won the NC with a record of 9-1 and 1.
So there's a whole generation of Bama fans that never saw the games but grew up with the hatred that Parshegian and those damn Yankees from the Noth (sic) cheated Bear's Boys and they can read it themselves.
That's just it....its ALWAYS an excuse in the SEC....always! Let's talk about the bowl games last season, primarily the Sugar Bowl...this is not ND related, but its an example.....all these SEC fans talked "OSU is fixing to go 0-10 in bowl games against the SEC" than, low and behold, OSU won......than it became "Oh, it doesn't matter, it was Arkansas, the unwanted stepchild of the SEC, had it been Alabama, they would have been destroyed." Notice though, Arkansas was the 3rd top ranked SEC team, even over OSU...but it was all an excuse....they can't stand losing!
Watch what happens, should the SEC not get into the championship, you will hear they got cheated, blah blah blah....
They talk about 1986, but they fail to mention the next year, ND destroyed them 36-7. know we have lost some games to some teams we shouldn't have.....but throw it in their faces about their losses to Utah and back to back losses to Louisiana-Monroe.......let the excuses fly!
Im sorry, it was 37-6 they beat Alabama
If anyone watched the video, at the end of the Sugar Bowl in 1973, Ara said "I would also like to give a hand to this Alabama football team, one of the best coached teams, we have ever played, this was an excellent game for college football." Plus, they said this is the first UNANIMOUS championship game win, in which ND won 34-33 but Alabama still claims that championship as one of their 13. The NCAA recognizes ND won the game, but the only reason they hold onto that is because of the UPI I think it was still gave it to Alabama.
Plus, let's not forget...the SEC is terrified to play bowl games outside of the south. Sure, they will play season games outside of their element (ie Alabama plays Penn State @ Beaver Stadium this season) but come time for bowl games, they wont cross the mason-dixon line to come up north to play. I hope soon we can get a good home-home game against a good SEC team soon. We just have to prove we can make it through our season games now.
