I despise Michigan as much as anyone, but never hope for a player to be injured. Break their spirit, YES; break their bones, NO.

how about ND players hitting so hard that michigan players cant finish the game, either because they got a stinger(or hammy), or because they dont want to get hit again. either way is acceptable. No broken bones, no long term effects, no cheap shots.....just an ol' fashion beat-down.

go back to the Sun Bowl game vs. Miami...in the 3rd qtr, there came a point where it was obvious that Miami wanted nothing more to do with ND. its because they were getting their *** kicked

Hitting is obviously an important part of football, but to say that you hope to break a QB's legs is fairly lame. Especially one that does so much right in a world of Pyrors.

^ I have to agree that from what I've read and seen D Rob seems like a really good, genuine kid and pretty damn funny. With that being said I wouldn't mind watching Teo blind side him with a clean hit and rattle his cage for a few quarters. But to wish someone's legs broken is just something you say in the heat of battle that you shouldn't mean. I know there is a ton of dirty football played, especially in the trenches but I don't want to see ND players taking cheap shots, twisting ankles in piles, or going for knee caps.. It's just not the way my father raised me as a fan.

These kids want to play for the Ravens DC. They want to play for the guy who coached Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Ed Reed. Kelly has to figure out how to counter that sales pitch. If only he could think of an an example of a legitimately excellent NFL coordinator who knew how to get the most out of NFL superstars, but had no idea how to develop college talent. Hmmmm . . .

Or how an NFL coordinator in a previous college coordinating job failed to develop blue chip recruits into elite talent...

Wanna know how Kelly defends it? He defends it when Mattison epically fails like he always has done every time he had to coach untalented players. Every team he has ever coached that was even half-way decent, was someone else's system, someone elses players. Nobody coached Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs or Ed Reed. Mattison simply kept the same system in place and let them do the same things they were doing before. If anyone was the Dcoordinator of the Ravens, its Ray Lewis. Take a real statistical look at his history (especially at Notre Dame). We will continue (Our defensive class was better last year, I still feel that this year will be as well) to beat them for defensive recruits because we will simply be a better defense, neh, a better program to join.

Nice to finally be able to say that with a straight face.

You have to question Mattison's motives going from elite NFL defense to college also-ran... IMO its a retirement gig to ease into retirement.

Right.... who could that be?

On the other hand, to counter Kelly's pitch, Hoke is going to have to think of an example of a wildly successful Big East coach whose success did not translate to a big time traditional power.

Mirror images.

I agree somewhat.

Mattison is a solid defensive coordinator. Not a great one. He certainly is not great at taking raw high school athletes and developing them into NFL prospects, which I guarantee is what he is selling to these recruits.

Of the recruiting classes that Notre Dame signed while Mattison was defensive coordinator, only one player (Anthony Weaver) has had any notable NFL success. As a DL coach, he had Justin Tuck, who is an obvious monster. Anyone else?

I don't see Mattison failing. Its Michigan they will be back as much as i love them being down. Its great for college football to have ND and Michigan on top where it belongs. And not losing to Toledo, Cuse, App State, and that four letter word that starts with N and ends with avy(no disrespect but we should never lose to them in football).

They definitely will be. Three to five years down the road.

Toledo? You are dogging Toledo! They well could beat tOSU this fall. If they do, that will be victories against 5 big ten teams in ten years! Sure they been blown out a couple times, but you need teams like Toledo to keep college football honest.

One can make a reasonable argument that parity is even better for college football than the underdog rolling over so the Legendary Programs wins.

Kudos to the underdogs for beating the Goliaths. And shame on the Goliaths for taking the underdogs for granted.

As for Mattison I don't recall his ND defenses as being memorable. The ND defense went for #11 in the nation to #60 after Mattison took over. They allowed almost 100 additional yds per game. Mattison's pass defense was the worse since Gary Darnell.

Mattison didn't fail at ND but he didn't excel either.

This. I don't see him failing but I also don't see him commanding a top 10 defense there. He will do better than his predecessors but I don't see Michigan having juggernaut any time within the next 5 years.
