Ahhhhh the Battle of Glorieta pass, New Mexicos only claim to civil war fame. More soldiers got drunk and lost in the forest than died in that skirmish.

Yeah that one, but there was another skirmish, not far from my description, further south. I'm thinking near Las Cruces or Old Mesilla area. I will look it up for you later.

EDIT

I think I found it: The Battle of El Brazito, just south of Las Cruces (but somehow,. I'm still not quite positive this is the one I am talking about, because the one I remember, maybe 1 person died, or fell off a horse.) And it was closer to El Paso.

"En route to Chihuahua, Doniphan's regiment was attacked by a Mexican army from El Paso del Norte about 9 miles south of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Since it was Christmas, Doniphan had given his men the day off."

Not at all meant to trivialize the War, but during my research, I found it to be a bit of a chuckle.

Interesting point, when Onate named the region El Paso del Rio del Norte in about 1598, the Rio Grande pretty much curved from southward toward the east tightly under the Rockies. As the river pushed further south, more citizens leaped North and started their vineyards. After the U.S. Mexico war, which split the area in two, you had two El Paso del Rio del Nortes, which was shortened to El Paso del Norte (Pass of the North). You had El Paso U.S., and El Paso Mexico. El Paso Mexico changed its name to Juarez, in honor of President Benito Juarez. End of confusion. Ft. Bliss was established in the 1800s to protect locals from the attacking Apaches.

I have to say I lived in south Florida for the last 13 years and I wouldn't consider it 'the south''. More like every person from the midwest with enough money to get out.

LOL...crazy story. I was at an airport one time with time to kill, so I watched MNF at a bar. I was sitting next to this guy and we started talking. Great guy, lived in Washington but was from Arkansas, and I'm talking about the boondocks of Arkansas, the back roads. He told me deep down there, racism is still alive and well; the craziest thing he told me was that the street he grew up on was sponsored by the KKK - it's written on the street sign!!!

But I'm not one to paint broad strokes with small samples. We can sit here and bag on every single part of the United States, Los Angeles and New York included. I'm kind of sensitive to it b/c USC people out here rip on South Bend all the time, when IMO it's a great place to live and raise a family. I'm sure the South is the same. Sure there's bad to it but there's also some great things about it. To each his own...

If we are being serious, I totally agree with you. Its kind of shtick for me to bag on the south. My story about the rib joint is 100% true, but I don't hold a whole part of the country accountable for that. Actually, other than that uncomfortable 10 minutes, the entire rest of my week in Mississippi was actually one of the best times of my life.

Depends on where you are. The beachier, the more snowbirds. Away from the coast, though, it is legit god-fearing, NASCAR-lovin' south.

I think we, as ND fans, simply need to recognize that the SEC is in a gilded age of football right now. They're the powerhouse, and everyone else is on the outside looking in. Jokes about "Southern" intelligence and the like trying to whitewash this fact only makes us look ignorant. In my view a more reasoned approach would be to acknowledge that their level of play is what is necessary for ND to win another NC.

(That said, don't get me started on how Alabama calculates national championships...)

Wow that's crazy... I'd always read Mississippi and Alabama had the worst educational systems in the country. What does participation rate mean? Because it's weird that Iowa (and all of the schools at the top) have low participation rates... does that mean they were only submitting their smart kids for evaluation or what? Assuming this is fair, I should retract my statements. Apparently education in the south has improved noticeably.

Mississippi is 18th, but only 3% of kids take it.

New York is 46th, but 85% of kids take it.

Make of that what you will.

But I will suggest we consider what the rankings of New York and Mississippi would be if only the smartest 3% of New York high school students took the SAT, and 85% of Mississippi high school students took it.

Moreover, what does a 3% participation rate say about the quality of education???

Only three percent take it? Am I crazy or isn't it required to go to college?

I went to the South for a wedding (Alabama) once and also my buddy lives in North Carolina, so I've visited a few times...and I really liked it. People were really friendly and laid-back. The food my wife and I had in Alabama was absolutely insane - best bbq ribs I've ever tasted (we went to a hole-in-the-wall place b/c we wanted authenticity). It was a former ND player's wedding, so it was very ND friendly, but even in the city (Montgomery), people were cool. In North Carolina we went to Tiger Woods' first tournament after his scandal, and the people at the golf tournament were great, and I had my ND gear on in full force.

So in my limited experience, I liked it. But I've never had to live there, so...
I think you have told this story before...Wasn't it Justin's Tuck wedding or something?

The greatest coach in the history of the SEC, Bear Bryant was 0-4 against the Irish. Plus, Notre Dame has a winning record against the SEC. Aaaaand most of the players in the SEC read on a second grade level. Tell the Southerners to wise up a bit.

42-32-5 plus, 5-1 against the Crimson Tide. Under Lou Holtz, at the Dome, the Irish gave Alabama one of the worse beatings they ever took. 37-6....the ONLY undefeated team in the SEC vs ND is Georgia. ND's 2 latest rivals in the SEC would have to be LSU and UT.

Im kinda ashamed of alot of you. Fatness, SAT scores, life expectancy... Really? Somehow I doubt some dumb *** chart is going to explain all of that and why it is. Did any of you ever think that graduation rates and SAT scores are effected more by demographics and government and not geography?

Yes, the south certainly has many issues but come on fellas, have any of you been to Western Pa or some part of New York? Kinda redneck-y up there too. The KKK was founded in Indiana for petes sake. I know 'cause my dad still lives in Wabash.

Its a big country. We have embarrashing parts all over. If you look hard enough you'll probably find some of it in your state.

Absolutely nothing.

In parts of the country more people take the ACT than SAT. Iowa for example probably has a low percentage on the SAT because the ACT is headquartered in Iowa City. Both the ACT and SAT marketed their product aggressively to college admissions personnel to gain market share.

CO, IL, MI, KY, TN, and WY require all high school students to take the ACT to assess high school performance.

The ACT is prevalent in the states in the middle of the country while the SAT is prevalent in the states along both coasts and TX.

Sad but true! I am an Indiana native, but live in Tennessee now, and let me tell you, there is not much love for our Irish here. ND fans here are laughed at, and told that ND is no longer relevant....dispite the Irish have a 42-32-5 record against the SEC, including a stellar 5-1 record against the Alabama Crimson Tide (Bear Bryant 0-4 against Irish) but yet, we are laughed at, simply because we haven't played anyone big. Laughing at the fact of losing to Navy, the 2007 bowl where LSU won 41-14.

They say this is "past" but this is the same conference that still brags about a 1-9 bowl game record against Ohio State. All eyes are on Coach Kelly, and I think he had to completely restart the program last season, and look forward to great things this season. Current indications show ND could be ranked around #6 in the nation....I don't think we will get a national championship this season no....but I do think we could get in a great bowl game, against the SEC....and WIN! Nothing would be better than to get revenge on LSU or go for a 6-1 record against Alabama.

The blind SEC only sees in the south, not South Bend....where the Gold Dome holds a winning record against them. Here is the thing to the SEC blind......believe all you want....call us Dunder Domers, the Hail Mary God Squad.....blah blah....fact is, ND is still relevant, and on a return to our former glory, so let the words NOTRE DAME travel through the south, and spread the word.....the Irish are coming, and there is nothing you can do to stop them!

Plus Ara Parseghian said he would love to see ND win another championship before his time comes to leave the earth, so let's give him one!

I'm sorry but am I hallucinating? Did we just devote 6 pages to avenging ND from the frickin frackin VolunQUEERS??? Shite. Hell must've frozen over and I didn't get the memo! The SEC is all a bunch of rednecks and criminals, take it with a grain of salt and get on with it, Lame Kiffin even knew when to get the hell out of the SEC!

Of course, the SEC uses the BCS as a crutch, and they will say ND's history doesn't count

The SEC doesn't use the BCS as a crutch, they use it as a cash cow. The SEC Commissioner in the early 90's Roy Kraner saw the potential of controlling the bowl games. He pioneered Conference Championship Games, splitting conferences into two divisions to influence the polls, and breaking up long standing rivalries to waterdown schedules thus guaranteeing a conference member would make the BCS Championship Game. Kramer also pioneered the conference bowl tie-ins and revenue sharing among conference wealth. Oh and Kramer became the first Commissioner of the BCS.
