I'm addressing this to your earlier comment, and anyone else that makes stupid comments about recruits. Don't you think there is a reason he has been offered a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame football team? We don't just go handing out recruits to anybody. If Kelly feels this kid deserves an offer, he deserves it. You guys base assumptions of numbers and seeing maybe a couple of minutes of game film from a year prior.Coaches watch relentless video, in-person games and workouts, and interviews with the young men. I'm sure they know what they're doing.
If you guys feel he shouldn't, then go join the staff and direct Kelly on how to recruit.

Disagree. As I mentioned in John Turner's thread, what's the point of allowing people to post here if the only acceptable responses are "I'm so glad we got this 4/ 5 :s: recruit!" or "I trust Kelly completely!" There's no meaningful discussion of a kid's potential that way.

Epitome's reservation about Mahone was expressed politely and had a reasonable basis (statistical production). It's a valuable contribution to the discussion here, and he shouldn't be shouted down for expressing a dissenting opinion.

When a staff looks at a recruit he looks at what he is and what he COULD be in the future. I don't care if the kid is a 1000 yard runner in High School-- it is a metric however, not the only metric. They are looking past the obvious.

Count me among those who would welcome a Mahone commitment. We should take two backs this class, a power back and speedier back. Will would fill one of those needs and would represent a good start in my opinion.

Sorrry Bud, You responded to the first comment I've made on this site in weeks. So if I made an "Earlier comment" please clarify. In this case, I am qualified to speak of the competition he plays against. I'm from Youngstown and played ball against just about every team on his schedule including Fitch. I know the type of talent there and with a clear conscience could say that I don't believe a 4 star ranking is warranted. 3 star perhaps... By the way, I've never posted on this or any other board that an offer was not deserved. So please explain what you are talking about.

This is one of the more short sighted comments I've seen on these boards.

People are allowed to debate. People are allowed to question scholarships -- that's the point of discussing recruiting. People are allowed to offer their opinions.

There's lots of people on these boards that watch lots of video too. There's lots of people that have seen our coaches in the past make many mistakes recruiting the wrong players. There's lot's of people that have seen coaches in the past not recruit the right players. Kelly and his staff, while I'm as much a believer as anyone, are not infallible. They can make mistakes. We're allowed to discuss are their choices correct or not.

That is the whole point.

Mahone not reaching 1000 yet, might have something to do with his QB recently being offered by Oregon. There is a lot of talent on his squad...and only one ball.

Think about this....what is the first thing we have to do to beat Michigan St, and what terrifies us against Sparty.......the run game...

Mich St ALWAYS has that 3star-low 4star back from ohio/indiana/michigan that carves up teams season after season....Mahone is their top target if not close to it....that says a lot to me.

Id be more than happy to have the kid.
I like your thought process.

Mahone is the big back that I want from this class...Fingers crossed.

I agree, the one thing Notre Dame has been missing the last 15 years is a strong powerful running back, and I like this guys size and build. I think he would be a great addition to this recruiting class.

I wouldn't say that. I think Rob Hughes was pretty strong and powerful. Did you see him carry trojan defenders last year!?

As for the <1,000 yards rushing, playing both offense and defense while in high school may have contributed to that...

"Mahone will be a three-year varsity starter in 2011. He rushed for 699 yards and had 11 receptions for 152 yards. He was also a starter on the defensive side of the ball and was named first-team defense Northeast Ohio."

MSU also had a decommit at RB from their 2011 class. They may still be looking to fill one more slot.

Mahone said the visit was great. His mother really enjoyed it as well. He may make a decision before the season and we are in solid position.

Someone should post his tweet. I dont do the Twitter thing, but its a good one

Not to share too much but his Mom LOVED ND. Mahone himself was shocked to learn about things like our graduation rate, strength of schedule, etc.

If Ohio State keeps their current two RBs I think he ends up Irish. Might be a big battle with PSU though.
