I wonder if all this trouble with OSU is the reason that the Big Ten is now looking into paying its players (as has been reported today). Maybe they know they cannot compete if they have to follow the current rules and instead think that their players will stay out of trouble if they are getting a little extra legally.

Is this whole O$U episode the stuff we heard was going to come out this summer and be a 10 on the 1-10 scale of a school getting exposed for major violations? What the F kind of program are they running up there if there is a housing scandal on top of the cars, tats, sex, who knows what else? Do they think they are part of the $EC or something?

That's the next phase.

NCAA goes nuclear on OSU. SEC leaves NCAA to form first semi-pro league. OSU joins SEC.

This is a post that was shared on a different forum:

A national media outlet (now said to be Sports Illustrated) is going to come out with a new story about NCAA Violations involving Tressel and Ohio State.

Claims are that there were paid vacations to players, recruits and their families, Illegal housing (as stated above) and cars to recruits, and other recruiting violations (I'm assuming that means $$$).

There was also Bernie Smilovitz on Channel 4 Detroit last night: Saying there were rumors in Columbus that Ohio State has been negotiating a buyout with Tressel.

An SI investigative reporter has been in Columbus for over 3 weeks, which is where the speculation is coming from.

I know it's not your post, Mike, so I'm not doubting you, but.....

At this point, if it comes to light that there were paid vacations, housing, etc., for recruits and their families, then buying Tressel's contract out would be the furthest thing from the University's mind, one would think?

Yeah but who knows. Maybe they are working something out where he will step down and OSU will give him a nice parting gift. Its all rumor at this point, but the guy who posted it is a supposed insider who was right about the car thing a month before it became known. I have no clue what's accurate, just passing stuff along.

I really hope they get hit hard, but the death penalty is for repeat violators already on prohbation for major offense, and I am pretty sure OSU is not on prohbation. So they best anyone can hope for is major sanctions and another stupid decision by them.

From a poster on another site:

Listening to ESPN radio on the way home from work in Columbus today, it was announced that SI is going to release an article next Tuesday on OSU and Jim Tressel that will bring to light more information on the program. And like all other news surrounding the program, this is not supposed to be good news. The radio show hosts advised that they have heard this news will be the end of Tressel.

He has a time travel machine that sends him 5 minutes forward to kick our *** in posting. Not to mention his super sci-fi goggles he wears that update him of every topic of college football before its ever thought!

2 top 10 RBs per Scout actually, one (Dunn) who has already wavered in his OSU commitment and will take visits.

If this lives up to the hype, the sanctions have to be a lot harder than what USC has been hit with.

I assume the same procedure for the exodus of players will be the same as USC though. Upperclassmen are free to fly?

Unsubstantiated internet dribble... but fun to think about. If even half of these are true O$U would be looking at worlds of pain I can't even begin to comprehend... unless the NCAA chickens out for fear of colleges breaking away.
From two seperate sources

1) Friend who is a lawyer on the NCAA rules committe

2) Parent of a current OSU player (Parent is college buddy of my dad)

FBI and IRS are digging around because of the financial and drug dealing implications...

The scandal will include

Pay for play (with Tressel's knowledge)

Players selling drugs

Girls paid to sleep with recruits and players

Ten Ginn's dad getting paid for years to funnel recruits

Similar allegations on the basketball team

I'm taking Tressel's class in the fall, so I'm hoping he sticks around for another year.

...and then the program can implode. :)

Is that the class on how to cheat, lie about it and still pretend to be an upstanding person?

No it's a class about coaching football. I coached high school football for two years after a neck injury ended my opportunity to play in college, so I'm beyond excited to hear from a coach as good as Tressel about his thoughts on the game.

Honestly, I hope he gets fired though. Ohio State deserves players with some character, and the system at Ohio State doesn't facilitate that. It's not just Tressel or the football program, it's the athletics department's fault. They separate the kids from the regular student body (they live in the graduate student dorms), make sure their grades are at a certain level (in the easiest of classes, no less), and even go as far as having a police presence at bars where the players drink--to stop the students from lauding them? No, to stop them from taking pictures so there's little to no evidence they are there underage. In short, it's a system that pulls them away from the university's students, does everything but fabricate grades, and makes sure they are treated like kings on the weekend--as if football players needed any help hahah

To be fair, my cousin is the captain of the swim team, and another cousin was the captain of the wrestling team, from them and all other accounts, the student-athletes in every sport other than football and basketball are actual student-athletes. But the dirty **** Ohio State pulls with their money-making athletes is abhorrent and shameful. I could sit here for hours telling you a hundred stories of the football players, but it's useless as everyone here assumes what they are and are correct. Ohio State is a great university, I love everything about it except what goes on under Gene Smith's watch.

Also, I was at the scholar-athlete dinner two days ago, for all athletes above a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Guess how many basketball players were honored? Two. What a f*cking joke.

Listening to the radio show that started this whole thing.

They've been going on and on about it. They've been saying we got good sources, we got good sources! They sound pretty confident this is happening.

If they are wrong, they're gunna look pretty damn stupid next week. They claim the source that is tipping them off to this was the same guy that tipped them off to the tattoo scandal and the car scandal.

The wait is killing me. lol

purely speculation on my part, but with all the other instances in regards to receiving gifts and money my thought is that this might have something to do with cheating in school or grades. that really seems to be the only thing that's missing in this rollercoaster. the talk show i believe said yesterday that some of what is going to be reported may go back as far as his days at Youngstown St.

This is from another website, 5 days before the radio show yesterday....

Just when you think you have heard it all regarding the violations involving Jim Tressel and the Ohio St. football program, more are on the horizon. That has been the trend since the Sugar Bowl and expect it to continue in the next couple of weeks.

The harder the NCAA looks the more they continue to find as we expected. Sources close to the program are distancing themselves from Tressel and that is the biggest sign that things are about to get bad. The new revelations will not just be about the cars or the cash, but vacations as well. Investigators are and will continue to find cash and prizes that could only be logically explained by several players winning the Price is Right Showcase Showdown over the past several years (that or some MAJOR NCAA violations have taken place).

Gene Smith keeps awkwardly reiterating that he supports Jim Tressel, but those days may be numbered. The Columbus Dispatch has been leading the way on the scandal to this point, but things will go national very soon and that is when things start to get real ugly. Just ask USC and Reggie Bush. Jim Tressel has just hired his own attorney this week to help build his defense against the NCAA allegations and he is going to need it. I’m starting to think that Number 3 might have been a little low for the Buckeyes on the Dirtiest Programs in College Football list.

Hearing rumors today that Sports Illustrated is supposed to be coming out with an article that reveals further ugliness on OSU. Has anyone else heard this??

Living in the heart of OSU country, it is funny how there are still many Bucknut fans who are convinced that Tressel is a good upstanding citizen and all this is blown out of proportion.

One of the funniest things to me is the reality that OSU is likely to lose the only victory they have against the SEC when the NCAA makes them vacate the 2010 season.

Their violation occurred less than five years after major violations by their hoops program, so LOIC is certainly possible. As far as Tressel negotiating a buyout, that doesn't make sense. He has admitted to violating his contract (multiple clauses) so they can fire him and pay him zero.

Ppl in Ohio love Tressel too much for OSU to fire him...a buyout will seem like they are doing them a favor and not make them out to be the bad guy.
