Spring Game Position Reviews Defense: Some reality!!!

Well, I waited a couple days to let the game soak in. Plus, I went back and watched it for a second and third time. Here are my thoughts and realities, now that every ND fan has gone all “Beano Cook – Three Heisman’s” about Lynch. Let’s begin. I will give my starters and depth grades.

DEFENSE:
Safeties – Hard to make much analysis here because most of the starters here spent more time watching than playing. The reality is here that we have two studs in Harrison and Zeke, plus a really good third option with Slaughter. I was hoping to get some ideas on McCarthy, but he was in a red jersey. He had to bypass making a tackle on Golson later in the game because of his jersey. Noticed Collinsworth making a few good tackles, he will be a player in the future.
Starters: A(Zeke and Harrison are both smart, experienced and athletic)
Depth: C(Slaughter is a really good player who will play a ton, but who will be the other? McCarthy or Collinsworth??)

Cornerback – I am not sure that Gray or Blanton got mud on their pants on Saturday. Reality is that they are both BCS elite. No need to risk injury. So, we got to watch the only other two CB’s on the roster right now. Wood looks the part of a player. He turns on the ball well, plus he will come up and tackle. The other rookie CB, Bennett J, had one of the overlooked plays of the day when he came totally across field to tackle Riddick on the end around. Jackson can flat out fly and loves contact. The two new kids on the block are going to be players.
Starters: A(Gray and Blanton are as lockdown and physical as any pair in football.)
Depth: C-(This grade is trending up with the performance of both Wood and Jackson this spring. Both hit hard. Jackson has awesome speed.)

Outside LB – Did Darius Fleming put his helmet on?? Again, Diaco was not going to risk a 3-year starter. So, we got to see Filer, Ishaq, Shembo and Spond. After watching these 4 play, I feel blessed with LB riches. The player who I was most interested was actually not Ishaq, but Spond. He did NOT disappoint. Spond is a player and plays with a great motor. He was one of those so-called throw in recruits two years ago, but he is no longer. Shembo is the stud we all expected. Filer is athletic, but still gets out of position. Ishaq looks good, but he appears to be thinking too much at this point. He will be a great situational player this year. On 3rd and long, you send in Ishaq and say, “go get the damn QB!!”. Fall starters: Fleming and Shembo, with a lot of Spond too. Level of concern – ZERO, ZERO for depth.

Inside LB – Teo asked the coach if he could fly home to Hawaii for the spring game, but all the flights from SB were full. So, we got to see a little of Carlo and he looked good. The rest of the day was spent watching new blood. Fox is a good LB with some speed. Pozlusky saw his only game action at ILB. He is a good kid, but physically outmanned. The most impressive newcomer at ILB was K Moore “8”. He was really jacked up and played well. Fall Starters: Teo and Calabrese with Moore and Fox playing a lot.
Starters: A-(Carlo’s pass coverage takes this down from A+)
Depth: B(Two big solid guys in Fox and Moore, McDonald should also return)

Nose Tackle – Hide the women and children because BIG LOU is in town!! I don’t believe ND has ever had a wealth of talent at NT like this year. Both Big Lou and Hafis looked the part of run stopping NT’s. The good news is that the guy with the most experience will be back in the fall to help, Cwynar. If you are going to run on the Irish, you better plan on running wide away from the middle.
Starters: B+(Lou needs more stamina, Cwynar missed spring are the two reasons, not an A)
Depth: A(Tell me how many teams in the BCS can roll out 3 legit players in Hafis, Lou, Cwynar)

Defensive End - Amazing how fast fans are ready to cast a 4-star player who has started for more than two seasons to the trash heap. Yes, I was impressed with Lynch, but he still has major gaps in his game. He will get them worked out during his freshman season, but let’s allow the kid to grow into a role. So, we go into the season with two really good DE’s of KLM and Ethan J. The even better news is that they know there are real players behind them. This has a double benefit: One, they will be pushed to perform every single game. Believe me, EJ heard all the same Lynch stuff and will be bringing his best effort ever. Second, our front line starters do not have to worry about getting worn down. So, they will not be pacing themselves during a game. They will be going 110% every down. On long 3rd down passing downs, expect to see Lynch turned loose.
Starters: B+(Both KLM and EJ are solid players who will never be All-American, but very solid)
Depth: A+(How many teams have a Lynch, Tuitt, Kona, Newman backing up the starters?? Ummm, NOBODY!)

that is an extreme example of the glass half full type of post...i like your optimism, but I see a little more level of concern at nose and ILB. If big Lou can't get into shape this becomes an area of concern. Cwynar is good not elite and Hafis may be good at times, but I would not count on it consistently. After Te'o in the middle we are very average and that showed on Sat. My dream scenario last winter was to work Spond or Shembo into being the sideline to sideline type of guy Te'o is, but that is not going to happen. I think Fox is underrated in the middle and it wouldn't surprise me to see Moore start for Carlo at some point.

you are very correct though about the depth on the outside of the DL and OLB and don't forget Councell is coming in at OLB too, which will add even more.

My view of NT is more optimistic than the above post, assuming that Nix is as good as he's looked so far. His stamina doesn't worry me for this reason: Nix will really stress the guys who are trying to block him. Then in comes a VERY good back-up [Cwynar] and he rocks their tired butts. Back comes Lou and Lord help them!

My brother had a similar situation once at Virginia Tech. He and his pro-quality right tackle buddy had an all-american defensive tackle from Miami in front of them who was a real pain. Now nobody was stronger at the time than my brother, but it took three quarters to wear the guy down and send him beaten-up off the field. My brother and the tackle looked at each other with a smile of relief until they saw his replacement coming on the field running and screaming like an insane hippopotamus in heat and a head so big that it barely fit in the helmet. My brother said it was a very long day indeed. Big Lou and Sean are going to give a lot of O-Lines a very long day as well.

I agree completely Mike. I would only add not to sleep on Hafis. He had a great spring, and should be in line for some quality minutes in the fall. We will need all 3 to play well, especially when we show our 4 man fronts, which we did 48% of the time last year (which may be a surprise to some). With the quality depth we now have on the line, we should be able to close out games better then we have in a while - creating a pass rush or clogging lanes that our starters have been too tired to do in the past when trying to hold a lead or get a big stop. A recent game in that ilk that comes to mind is Michigan. This could possibly help us win a game or two that we wouldn't have last year.

great point...all good teams get after the QB at the end of the game, we were lucky enough to get away with that against SC.

I can appreciate your optimism, and I am pretty stoked about this 2011 myself. However, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Having Kelly mic'ed in this game, gave good insight to where the weak areas are. Play calling, and the O line's inability to scan and read the field is causing our qb's to find themselves under pressure. It's ok during spring practice, but we can't have this during regular season or our offense will get chewed up and spit out. I think that's something Kelly is really working on, so here's hoping they come together.

Re: Hafis. I agree with his quality as a defender. I just don't know how Diaco is going to get him, barring injuries, a lot of minutes. The other way that Hafis gets in the game, however, is if Diaco surprises us with a lot of four-man front. This wouldn't totally blow me away, as it utilizes our good depth on the D-Line, and mitigates against the problem of an unsettled middle-backer next to Manti.

Two-deep four man front: KLM/Tuitt; Nix/Hafis; Cwynar/Schwenke; Ej/Lynch. Sounds pretty special to me.

Are you really going to tell me that you learned that our playcalling stinks from listening to a coach mic'd up at a spring game. Get a freaking clue!!!!! The 8-10 different plays called during the spring game were all simple on purpose. One, Kelly just wanted to see how individiual youngsters played. Second, he wanted to see two young QB's perform. Finally, you really think he was going to give any good info away while mic'd up that another team could use to help scout.

PLEASE, PLEASE!! Wake up and smell some realiity.

I think you are going to see 4 man fronts more often... our D-Line will have Elite like talent this Fall...

Let' see: (I’ll try to get everything in here.)

Before the game, I spoke with and shook hands with both KLM and EJ. Man, I mean to tell you they are “powerful big” these days. I saw them last year, and they (each) are like two different people, all of KLM and especially EJ’s legs. I am glad everybody is so enamored with Aaron Lynch. He is a wonderful young man, and has the kind of drive we need. But I think everybody (except the coaching staff) is missing the granite cliffs in front of them!

These guys are 40 and 50 pounds heavier than they were, and since it is all muscle, (trust me) faster and stronger, with better bases. Think about it; they are at three hundred pounds apiece, with experience! Now that they have some incredible OS/LB talent behind them, which was never the case before, and they have an off the hook two (three) deep behind them, there may be some All America honors in the future.

The only other thing about the defensive ends is Bruce Heggie deserves more than a pat on the back. I heard people on this site question whether he belonged at ND. He does and he will be capable of quality reps this year; Think of it we have six (quality) defensive ends with no weak links!

Everything was great with your outside linebacker assessment, except, it helps clarity if you break it down by Cat and Dog. (Their terms not mine.) The Cat starter is clearly Flemming, with Ishaq backing him up. I am puzzled at the reactions to Ishaq so far; his pursuit took my breath away! He may in fact be one of the fastest players on the team; he certainly is as far as football speed. His acceleration was great, especially considering the field conditions!

Dog is the biggest surprise. We never had anyone who adequately played Dog last year. This year we have two. (Either is a potential future AA candidate in my opinion.) Shembo impressed early (in his career, last fall) with his pass rushing, but that was from a different position. I cannot believe that he made the switch so seamlessly! He looks like he has been out there in that position for a couple of years. Now, the “guy” is Danny Spond. He passed the sound test.

On the field, I could hear his tackles, (especially the one on Alex Welch). Watch the tape. He is an incredible (almost freakish) talent. I do not believe it is an exaggeration to say he covers like a db, and hits like Manti! I am telling you the punishing power of our linebackers has gone through the roof since the beginning of last season!

And nobody mentioned Neuman and Stockton. I saw good things out there from four players on the nose, with a fifth, the probable starter, out for spring ball!

I would imagine that on 3rd and medium-to-long we will see a lot of 4-man fronts with a nickelback in the game. This is pretty typical of a 3-4 base team to do in passing downs. I don't know how much 4-3 base we'd see, though. It isn't as simple as putting an extra DL on the field and taking a LB off. Assignments in a 4-3 are different for every single front-seven position compared to a 3-4. I think we will see a lot of sub package featuring 4-man fronts, especially if the base defense can be successful stopping the run on first down. That is one reason why Nix is such an important piece - his ability to eat up defenders and occasionally get into the backfield and be disruptive will allow our pass-rush specialists more opportunities in obvious passing situations.

(Side point: I also think concerns over Nix's endurance may be overblown. I'm not saying he is or will be a marathon athlete, but a 3-4 NT is mostly a 2-down player anyway, and sometimes a one-down player. He is not going to need to play every defensive snap in order to impact games.)

Uuummm no, I didn't learn that from that game, it was interesting to HEAR what he had to say. That is all. I know our play calling sucks, as does our exectuion, as does our team work on O, because they get out there and have no communication, can't read the field, can't read body language etc...It's kind of hard to convey your tone and message in only text, but there's no mistaking that you are rude. I don't come on here and treat anybody with any sort of disrespect, and if you want to debate with me, I suggest you learn some tact and couth, and talk to me like the adult that I am.

Maybe the execution isn't working very good, but I love Brian Kelly's play calling. He knows what he is doing, and he expects the execution out there. I saw good communication from Crist during the game. He stepped up and ran the huddle like he was supposed to. He told Riddick what he did wrong and what he expects Riddick to run. I also saw Kelly communicate very well to the young QBs where their reads should be and in what order. It is not communication, it is execution that is the problem.

Ok i used a poor choice of words...there is nothing wrong with Brian Kelly calling plays. But last season they couldn't even read the symbols, so what I liked about him being mic'ed is that I got to hear that he is trying to correct that. The huddles were sloppy, the messages are not being conveyed, and then they are executed poorly. That is really all I meant in my original post. I don't really think it warranted the overreaction it received but whatevs.

How do we know? I maintain you can't make any specific assertions from the Spring Game. The reason is that it is a vehicle for the coaches to poke flashlights in the corner; not build cohesiveness to win a game against an outside opponent.

Not one person has commented on what a yeoman’s job the entire O-line did with four different packages taking every offensive snap in the game! I just don't understand! I saw Zack Martin with some of the most crushing blocking I've ever seen. And Tate Nichols absolutely manhandled, I mean buried some bodies!

That's a rather harsh response dude. k1ssme made an observation about the spring game that seemed obvious to me regarding poor execution on offense last season. She is THERE and a first hand witness. I find her input to be fascinating.

Without any regard to any arguments here, I'd like to mention that i thought that it was interesting that Kelly said post-game that "you" [we] didn't get to see any of the real stuff today, because he didn't want anyone getting any of it on film. I assume that we were uber-vanilla on everything we were doing out there, and what we can take away from the game was a chance to give certain players the "eye-test" and not a lot more.

That Kelly would be concerned about USF and UofM stealing anything this early on film is not paranoia, I think, but rather the fact that our amazing coach leaves absolutely nothing to chance that he can control.

I thought the game was great. Looking forward to a dominant defense in the fall, and no, I'm not worried about the offense.

...Noticed Collinsworth making a few good tackles, he will be a player in the future......

Collinsworth is a guy that I was not very excited about when he signed or thru the year last season. But I like what I saw in the Sun Bowl, and the move to Safety just seem to click in my head when I heard that. He is now one my favorite 'sleeper' players on the team. I think he is going to make solid contributions to the team in the next couple years.

....Just another player/position to be excited about.

Defense will take care of itself. I'm really worried about the offense. None of the receivers looked good.
