Who is/was the best ND player of your generation? For me I'd say Autry Denson

I didn't follow it as close back then, (because I was a kid), I'd like to say Tony Rice.

In reality, I'd have to go with Golden Tate, even over BQ and Zibby..

You're going to really need to clarify "generation."

Generation: As in my lifetime, or my age group?

I'm thirty too.

And when I was college aged, Zibby, Quinn, and the Shark were my heroes.

Do I have to pick one?

in the recent era??? hmmmmmm,.... still waiting for someone to spark that same feeling that Bus, Rocket, Densen, Zorich, McDougal, Duff and others have in the past... MAYBE Shark... but nah, no one really gave me that same feeling lately, maybe it's the quality of play, maybe it's the age factor on my part... BUT I'm all ready for Teo, Crist, Wood and Co. to earn a spot on my wall... I'll become a huge fanboy...

Your age group +/- 5 years

Well, +/- 5 year olds are odd humans.

Deep breath...I will say ...........Rocket.

And Bettis. And Rice. And Brown. And Reggie Brooks. And...Uh oh, they are all backs...

Zorich

Wait, I didn't see much of any of them... Erick Pennick? Tom Clements? Blair Kiel? Allen Pinkett?

age-32 It is a close race Between Jerome Bettis and Denson.... one in which i am sure Denson would win in reality.

Derek Mayes and on defense Tuck! (Just turned 28 btw)

People undervalue Mayes. just imagine the numbers he would put up in Weis or Kelly offense.

if you are in our age group you're fav. player should be a back... it was pointed out correctly that Mayes was the man,... and he was, but he didn't get the ball nearly as much... the Irish running game was SO FUN to watch back then.

Amazing to watch, and very effective.

Unfortunately I never saw Rice play, only saw Bettis and Brooks last game in the Cotton bowl vs A&M. The backs I've loved during my time: Lee Becton, Ray Zelers, Randy Kinder, Denson, Marc Edwards, Jones and Tony Fisher.

Tim Brown, last Irish to win the Heisman. He also returned punts and kickoffs, always got open in 3rd and long situations. Just imagine his numbers in Weis/BK's offense. Probably one of the most under rated Irish players of all time, he was the passing /return game , everyone knew it and he still couldnt be stopped.

Well, I'm 34 so...it's hard to narrow it down.

Listed in no particular order:
Tim Brown
The Rocket
Rice
Waters
Bolcar (even though he went to Pburg High School which being an Easton guy I shouldn't technically have him listed, but he did sign a football and t-shirt for me).
Zorich
Bettis
Brooks (both of them)
Mays (I can still picture the one handed catch he made against Michigan in the back of the endzone...too bad we lost that game)
Kevin McDougal (I still don't think he gets enough praise for what he did in 1993)
Bobby Taylor

Some of my recent favorites were/are:
Shark
Carlson
Laws
Tuck
Tate

There's a lot of others, but I think I've listed too many as it is. :)

I'm 40 and have so many fond memories of the many special players that have played during my lifetime. Without a doubt I would say watching The Rocket and Tim Brown were some of my favorites. On the Defensive side Chris Zorich was my favorite. I loved the intensity he displayed. There are so may awesome players over the last 40 years, but these three for me were truly something special.
