I wasn't gonna start a new thread, but screw it there aren't many things I like more then hating dook.

So the chairman of the selection committee said that dook was a #1 seed no matter the result of their game vs UNC.

That statement still hasn't quite sunk in yet. Unbelieveable

I will be rooting hardcore for Tennessee or Michigan in that second round game. Duke is a fraud without Irving.

Texas possibly got screwed the worst of anyone. They lose in the Big 12 Championship to the best team in the country.... Florida loses to Kentucky by double digits.... and Florida grabs a #2 while Texas gets a #4? What?

Would anyone here take BYU over Texas? Or BYU over Louisville or Kentucky? Wisconsin, Purdue and BYU are three very over-seeded teams. Just crazy selection job this year.

Why hate Duke... they do it the right way,... like it or not they ARE the Notre Dame football of college basketball... saying you hate Duke is acknowledging that you get why people hate ND...

screw that... I love when Duke wins and pisses all the SC, UF, ghetto thug fans off...

I'm watching the Fab Five documentary right now... just like The Miami Football one dogging on ND they talk all kinds of stuff about Duke being too white collar, blacks who go there are uncle toms, too academic "Hating everything they stand for"... screw the fab five... screw the haters.... Go Duke

Not a smart comment by that guy, but Duke is a 30-4 defending national champion that just won the ACC tourney.

Kinda shocked that Texas is a #4 too. But they are 4-4 over their last eight games.

In my opinion They are not the Notre Dame of basketball.

People don't hate dook because of their success.

I'm not gonna go into it, but because they are good is very very very very very far down the list

Yeah, but they are the best team in the country with Irving and I think he will play in the tourney. Just a hunch!

there is zero difference between Duke Basketball and Notre Dame Football other than the fact that Duke has won something lately...

deal with it.

I hate Duke cuz they're successful. Long story, goes back to my childhood. I don't think they are the ND of basketball either. I live in U of M country so this thought may be different elsewhere, but of the one's I know that hate ND it isn't because of their success.

A.) I don't think he's gonna play

B.) At this point in a weird way I think it would hurt the entire team. I realize he's really really good, but at this point they've played so long without him i think it would be best at this point for them if he didn't come back

I would love to hear how they are different... both have the history and tradition, both are hated for it... both are viewed as upper class and snobby by those who hate on them... both are supposedly media/poll darlings... both do it the right way and live up to academic standards

different how?

I actually don't hate Duke, I just hate that they stole a #1 seed and got gift wrapped SDSU as their #2 seed.

I'll give you one difference. When the Duke lacrosse scandal happened the players got lynch mobbed by their own faculty and the coach got crucified based on literally 0 facts. Notre Dame has never acted so pompous and arrogant as to betray part of their own family like that.

Subject: Leaving Duke

I graduated from Duke last May and just wanted to express my disgust for your decision to leave the Duke program after only two years. As an alum, not only do I hold the school in high regard, but the basketball program as well, especially since both have deservedly garnered such a great deal of respect for their accomplishments.

As part of our basketball program, you represent Duke as a whole. We are first and foremost an academic school, you clearly did not belong at Duke in the first place if this was the extent of your commitment to Duke and a college education in general. You have not only insulted the current students who are putting in four years at a school they love, but also the thousands of alumni who have realized the value of a Duke education and what an honor and privilege it was to be there for four years.

If you do not realize the opportunity you has infront of you to play for Coach K and at the same time attain a Duke diploma, then that is certainly your loss. I just wish that you has spared us the notion that you were continuing in the tradition of being a Duke student-athlete, in emphasizing excellence in both academics and athletics. You will not be considered part of the Duke family, in my mind as well as many others. You have by no means proved yourself worthy of that title.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Taylor

Thank you very much, for reminding me of the reason why I left Duke. People like you can not and will not ever understand my situation. I’m sure daddy worked very hard to send your rich self to college. While real people struggle. I would also like to extend an invitation for you not to waste your or my time ever again. Never being considered a part of your posh group of yuppies really hurts me to the heart. Yeah, right. Because I don’t care about you or your alumni.

Sincerely, Elton Brand #42 NBA

I find this distressing. Attention to detail and spell check were ignored. Brand's retort was succinct and grammatically correct. Kinda/sorta/almost. There was a period where a comma would have been appropriate.

Yes. Yes, yes, yes the intent came through; but the presentation was lacking.

I agree that Duke and Notre Dame are both castigated as snobbish in regard to academics and athletics, but I view that as a "good thing" whether in regard to football, basketball or lacrosse.

Long live academic and moral standards – unless applied to me.

Booyah. I'm one of the Crazies! I never watched basketball until the mid nineties, when my cousin turned on a game which happened to be UNC/Duke. He was a Heels fan and a douche, so I cheered for Duke--I have ever since. They got rocked and weren't very good that year or the next, but I started playing basketball around then as well, so I watched them more and more. Hate all you want, but they are a quality academic institution with a respectable coach. I like that my two college teams for the popular sports are both great for academics.

He is a North Carolina fan; He has every right to hate Duke.

I am just happy UCONN has the opportunity to give Duke the Cleveland Steamer again. (See UCONN's 1999 and 2004 Championship run)

(dshans, did I use that semi-colon appropriately?)

Come on Irish Lax. A Fraud? They just buried a fully stocked roster of UNC. That game wasn't as close as the final score would indicate. I agree w ACamp, Duke does it the right way and there are certainly parallels to ND football. It is a bit of a head scratcher however when they say they were a #1 before the game. Go ND!

A UNC team that needed huge choke jobs and a lot of luck from Miami and Clemson to barely eek their way into the finals. I mean seriously do you guys actually watch ACC basketball or do you just look at ranking and listen to pundits? I challenge you to tell me one quality win UNC has this year besides Duke at home and Kentucky at home. And also tell me one quality win Duke has without Irving besides UNC.

Hint: they don't have any, but they have tons of bad losses including some to non-tournament teams. They both got high seeds as product of misleading SOS (and by default a higher RPI) + pre-season hype... not results on the court. UNC has as many losses to non-tournie teams (2... one by 20 to Georgia Tech) as they have wins over top 25 opponents. That is really sad. Duke's biggest quality win without Irving is #7 seed Temple and they have a loss to a non-tourney team (Virginia Tech) in that stretch.

Duke and UNC are both frauds at seeds they were given... but no more so than Florida and BYU. Here's how it should've gone down:

#1 OSU, Kansas, Pitt, ND
#2 SDSU, Kentucky, Duke, Syracuse
#3 UConn, Louisville, UNC, Texas
#4 Purdue, Florida, BYU, Arizona/Wisconsin

I must agree, one of the reasons I like Duke, is because of their Coach. He is always above reproach and shows a tremendous amount of class and character, regardless of the outcome of the game win or lose.

Lastly, to everyone saying Notre Dame = Duke... yes, there are a lot of similarities.

Similarities:
Lots of Championships
Lots of haters
Strong academics

Dissimilarities:
Everything else

The main difference between the schools is the fan base. While Notre Dame embraces fans of every type and all of us support our players win/lose/draw that cannot be said for Duke. You hear lots of athletes talking about how much it means to be part of the Notre Dame family... you see us applaud our players after every game regardless of outcome... and while we might razz Brian Smith for not keeping contain on message boards everyone would give him a pat on the back if they saw him walking around.

Duke? Well it's kinda hard to describe... but there is something almost racist about the way they treat their athletes. Seriously, it's very weird historically how they've embraced some of their white players but treated black ones as almost indentured servants. You here all kinds of stories about athletes getting bad vibes or feeling unaccepted or unwanted when they get to Duke. Now, I'm sure the vast majority of Dukies aren't actually "racist," but they certainly divide the campus base on who's a student versus athlete. They also don't have nearly the diversity or breadth of fanbase of Notre Dame even though they are certainly a national brand.

As for doing things the "right way" there have been far more than whispers for a very long time that they do not. See Chris Duhon's mom getting hooked up with a posh job with no skills and having multiple cars after he signed with Duke. Her boss? A Duke booster. Also, their handling of the lacrosse rape scandal was certainly not doing it the right way. And post scandal there are many professors who refuse to offer their classes to athletes. That's really doing it the right way? By being exclusionary to athletes because you don't think they're "fit" to take your class?

With all of that being said, I love Coach K and have immense respect for Duke as an academic institution. A bunch of kids from my high school went there and they are some of the brightest people I have ever met. And certainly not everyone exhibits the negative qualities of the influential minority there.

But please stop saying Duke = Notre Dame. They are quite different in everything from their core principles (religion) to their approach to "doing things the right way" regarding athletics.

Here are some other fun facts:

Notre Dame Basketball Graduation Rate: 100%
Duke Basketball Graduation Rate: 92%

Notre Dame Football Graduation Rate: 99%
Duke Football Graduation Rate: 97%

So in that respect, you have to give Duke props for academics first (almost) as well as Notre Dame. In that way they definitely do things the right way and should be commended.

I agree with you 100%. You gotta be blind not to see the simularities. I've always liked Duke. Not a big "fan" by any means, but I respect the program and Coach K. Guy puts a contender on the court every year.
