The question is whether Notre Dame is the only national brand?

I submit that Notre Dame football is the only national brand.

These are the schools that I consider having great football histories:

Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Southern Cal, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Penn State

In recent years, you could add:

Florida, Miami, Florida State, maybe LSU

All of these thirteen schools have had significant success. All have had time periods where the programs have faltered but all have had resurrections. That's what is great about college football. All of these schools have large alumni and fan followings, all have unique histories that make them interesting tto their fans.

Notre dame is the only school that has a significant national and international following and here are my reasons.

1- Independent status allows Notre Dame to play schools all over the country; Yankee Stadium, Rose Bowl, Ireland, Texas to name a few. No other school has that.

2- Only school with it's own TV contract with a major broadcast network with all home games broadcast nationally in addition to most away games. No other school has that.

3- Affiliated with the largest christian religion in the world. No other school has that.

4- Most NATIONAL Championships. No other scholl has that.

5- Knute Rockne. Frank Leahy. Ara Parseghian. Lou Holtz. Other schools have had a great coach, or two, but no other school has that.

6- No school evokes more emotion than Notre Dame when it's in the national discussion. No other school has that.

7- The Four Horsemen. No other school has that.

8- Finally: Rudy No other school has that.

Now, I could go on, and you might disagree. That's fine but it would be hard to convince me that another school is more instantly recognized in college football than Notre Dame.

A national brand, the only national brand. :jump:

I believe it is a national brand due to having a huge fan following in big cities. New York- huge tv market. Chicago- large tv market. Los Angeles-huge tv market. These all help in the natiional love of ND. Oh Yeah plus all the above

I agree. Other schools are tied down to a state, such as Ohio State, Michigan, Southern Cal, etc. So even though these schools have large fan bases in number, they are mostly concentrated in the area that the school is. While alumni do spread and make the fan base wider, the difference between a state school's fan base and Notre Dame's fan base is huge. Maybe not in size, but in how spread out it is. There isn't really an area (like Ohio for Ohio State example) where there is an extreme density of ND fans, but Notre Dame is everywhere, and it appeals to a lot of people because of the fact that it's so national. For example, I live in Ohio, which is a pretty big area for Notre Dame fans, but I don't know any alumni or have many friends who are Nore Dame fans, but after watching one game in fifth grade (the Bush Push..) I became a die-hard fan. The tradition and national appeal is impossible to match.

We are the Yankees of College football. National audience, always on TV, and you either love us or hate us.

More Heisman trophy winners than any other university?

I looked that up, said So Cal and Ohio State are tied with Notre Dame if you count Archie Griffen's seperately.

Knute Rockne with the greatest PR move in history giving away the rights to broadcast ND games over the radio for free at a time when other teams were trying to sell their rights.
Thereby leading to the subway alums which has caused all this.

1. By choice. There are more than a handful of schools that could survive, and even thrive, as an Independent, if they chose to do so. Texas, USC, Ohio State, Penn State all come to mind, just off the top of my head.

2. Again, by choice. Because the tOSUs, USCs, Texases of college football choose to participate in a conference, they are stymied by the Conference media contracts.

3. As previously mentioned........... Boston College.

4. Having the most national championships doesn't equate to being the only school able to be a national brand. You're really reaching with that correlation.

5. Miami of Ohio..... Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Ara Parseghian, Weeb Ewbank, Sid Gillman, Paul Brown, Jim Tressel, John Harbaugh, Gary Moeller, Larry Smith, **** Tomey, Sean Payton.

6. True

7. Two time Heisman winner, Blackshirt defense........ there are lots of other great units, or parts of units, at other schools.

8. *shrugs* Marshall had a pretty major motion picture made, about it's football program.

ND is a great National Brand, and probably the Coca-Cola of college football. But let's express some of the modesty that is such an integral part of the Catholic teachings and what makes a man a "Notre Dame Man"? We don't need to beat our chests about it. And there are other programs that could very easily be considered a national brand. If anyone thinks that Ohio State football is only a brand in Ohio, then I would submit that they have never visited the Phoenix, AZ area, or the Tampa, FL area.

It was a direct refutation to his insinuation that NO OTHER PROGRAM has had a plethora of coaches like ND. That one point was not designed to settle any larger argument, just to point out that this ONE point that he made was without merit.

I think it'd be pretty safe to assume that he was meaning none of the other power houses that would compete with us for the 'national brand' thingy.

That was my intent, could have been clearer I guess.

As far as the "boasting", sorry if you were offended. I didn't post this on some national board about college football. I posted it on a forum called "IrishEnvy", in the Notre Dame football section. Still, I'll admit to being proud of Notre Dame.

Ok. The how about:

Wayne Woodrow (Woody) Hayes - an absolute legend in College Football Coaching
Earl Bruce - won more than 75% of his games, over a 9 year stint at tOSU
John Cooper - maligned for not being able to beat Michigan, but went 111-43-4, in his 13 seasons
Jim Tressel - 106-22 in 10 seasons....... with 2 NCs

True but Earl Bruce and Jim Cooper didn't win national championships. Tressel is a great coach but Townsend State counted in this discussion?

You don't have to win a NC, to be a great college coach, which was the argument presented.

Tressel's record, that I posted, was all from his time at tOSU.

When was Tressel's 2nd NC?

The other comparisons were centered around the other schools listed which I believe to be the most consistently prominent football programs, just my opinion though.

Na mate no problem. I wasn't offended by it just don't like doing it myself. Though, of course, half of me TOTALLY agrees! theres NO PLACE LIKE ND. Its true but to say it...idk just me doesn't like it.

Yeah sure. I wasn't defending his point, I just thought it was funny that Miami of Ohio was brought up in a thread about National Brand. :) .
btw I've never head of Earl Bruce or John Cooper.

The national following thru the subway alums is the key. No other school has a following of this magnitude. I have traveled all over this country and Europe and there is no equal. I submitt that the closest is Nebraska as they have many non grads that are fans in many states. I repeat myself but tell this short story while walking the streets of Rome. A guy comes up speaking Italian to my partner and he translates that the guy wants my hat (ND) and will pay. I ask does he know what this hat means and thru my friend he says to me GO IRISH!. I gave him the hat. Rockne started all this and its amazing that an icon of sport in America has lasted this long and not had its light burn out. There will always be a spot in Americas heart for Notre Dame football. From dont bet against Joe Louis/Yankees/and Notre Dame of the 40's to Here Come the Irish of today Notre Dame stands alone.
