Who do we think will see a significant increase in playing team in 2011?
What Freshman's will sit out the year and which will see the field?

I think we can field a pretty good team without any Freshman seeing the field in 2011 but who will see the field and who amongst the current players will be most affected (Pro or Con) by the new arrivals?

I was actually thinking about this today. Glad you posted this question. The linebacker/de depth is deep but obviously a lot of youth. I am mostly curious about this position..how will the new guys fit the scheme?....

I think Deion Walker will finally emerge and see some action this season.

Freshman who get PT. Hard to say since they haven't played yet bit i think it is safe to say:

Aaron Lynch, Stephon Tuitt, Bennett Okatcha and Josh Atkinson will be given every opportunity to play immediately

Daniels, GA3, Ishaq, Councell and Rabasa will challenge for PT but not all will play

The rest i think RS

I think Jalen Brown has a better shot at seeing the field before any of the other DBs. Brown is the most polished of all our DBs coming in.

Lynch and Tuitt could see PT as possibly making the 2 deep. Ishaq could be just outside the 2 deep making special teams while in the waiting of a injury or something being the next man in rotation. GA3 and Daniels may see time. Atkinson and Okotcha I could see getting some PT sparingly.

Also, LMAO! I have lost all faith in this kid, but I really really hope you are correct.

A lot of fans gave up on Walls, Harrison and Brian Smith.

A lot of fans are giving up on Goodman and Jonas Gray.

Coaches don't give up on anyone for a reason

I actually agree. Posted to quick to actually think about it all in. He very easily could see some PT.

We always forget about the kids who have been on campus working out, practicing, just not showing up yet on Saturdays....I love this recruiting class, but we have a lot of kids already on campus that we were in love w/ as recruits also...You have to be a total stud to make much of an impact as a true freshman, not saying we don't have any b/c I think we have several w/ that potential, but lets not sweep the guys on campus out of the way just yet.

Based on what? It's not like he's a young kid that sat out last year waiting for his chance. He has been around for awhile and never shown up on the field. Brian Kelly had a problem with his work ethic last spring. Unless he shows up this winter for workouts and has a serious change of heart and attitude, he most likely wont see the field. George Atkinson and Davaris Daniels have a better shot of seeing the field that Walker, in my humble opinion.

For the tight end position, I think Ragone will strickly bring depth this year. I think Alex Welch will really step up this year. Coaches had a lot of good things to say about Alex all year.

It's just a feeling I get. Based on no certain knowledge of the situation, just have a feeling he hasn't given up and is ready to finally live up to some potential. We shall see what happens and only time will tell. I just want the best players on the field and for Kelly not to play favorites like a previous coach of ours. Which of course he hasn't done which I applaud him for. Excited about the changes at Notre Dame and extremely excited about how recruiting is shaping up and how we finished the season.

So I am as high on this class as the next guy, but are we really looking at any breakout freshman? I think Ishaq and Aaron might get stuck with special teams duties with a few plays here and there due to the depth at de and olb. I could be wrong, I have before. Floyd, Riddick, Jones, and others may keep GA3 and Daniels from seeing much pt at wide out. I think the freshman with the best chance at breaking out would be one of our dbs. I dont have a particular favorite, but the lack of depth in our secondary could lead to a freshman having a chance to break out.

Notre Dame’s 15 Young Impact Players for 2011 | One Foot Down

Here is a good look at 15 of next years Sopomores. Helps to temper the lose of Tuitt. Once again I must say that Hendrix could be the man.

Good post. I expect to see some of these guys on the field quite a bit in 2011. Lo Wood and Cameron Roberson are real sleepers in this class. I want to see Nix crack the two deep and take some serious steps towards becoming a BJ Raji type defensive tackle.

I don't think there is as much depth at OLB and DE and as you think.

Let's look at proven players we know of at each position..

OLB-D. Flemming and......? Maybe Shembo, but I wouldn't call him proven by any means.

DE-KLM, E. Johnson and....? Schwenke looks promising, and some of the other guys that played back-up last season were good role players, but I wouldn't say we have anyone that can keep AL off the field if he can gain the needed weight by August.

The other thing to keep in mind is Diaco likes to rotate liberally so there should be plenty of playing time for the DE's coming in.

As far as the WR's much of that is going to depend on how quickly they can pickup the play book, but I wouldn't be surprised to see either of them getting serious reps by week 4, your probably going to burn the red-shirts anyway using them as kick returners.

What about Steve Filer at OLB. This guy needs to see the field more with his athleticim.

I agree 100%. I believe Filer will become a starting olb along with flemming next season. Although we will see a lot of Shembo as well.

Ishaq Williams, similar to Manti, has the ability to come in and play right away because he is physically developed/athletic enough to play his position. There are only a handful of players each year that you can say that about, but Ishaq Williams at OLB is one of them. The question is whether he can get enough reps to learn the position well enough that he can beat out vets... and that's anyone's guess.

Manti got more and more PT as the year went on as a frosh. With Ishaq being an EE, by next fall there is no telling whether he will be ready to compete for a starting spot, but it is a very real possibility. No matter what I would be shocked if he is not on the 2 deep. My personal prediction is that you will see Fleming as a starter at the CAT position with Ishaq backing him up and getting a few more snaps each game as the season goes on. The other scenario is that Shembo will back him up.

I think Filer will be the starter at DOG with a battle behind him between a lot of guys (maybe even Councell... but Councell is also a good RS candidate) for his backup. Filer ended up 3 deep at CAT after a short stint on the 1st team in pre-season practice... but then transitioned over to being Neal's backup at DOG later in the season after Brian Smith moved inside. Looking at the crop of athletes we have, I feel he will be the best fit to step in as a starter this season. There really isn't a lot of depth at this one particular position because the DOG takes a pretty unique skill set. You have to be able to play the pass and the run which means a unique blend of speed, agility and strength is required. Ben Councell, in due time, should dominate at this position. It's as if his skill set was invented for it. But until he is ready, Filer is very athletic and should be the starter there.

1) Ishaq
2) Tuitt
3) Lynch

However, I think all three should get significant playing time, unless Kelly thinks otherwise.

After hearing about Cwaynar's surgeries, I'm a little concerned.

He had a stress-fracture in his foot, and a discectomy.

Any time a back surgery is involve, IMO it's not a good thing.

The positive here is that we have two excellent backups in the waiting in Nix and Stockton.
