Cape Coral High's Boyd to verbally commit to Notre Dame | news-press.com | The News-Press

I don't want to be critical of irish Envy, but this system you use of forcing people to look at every single potential recruit's particular post chain, just to find out what new is going on with him, is just not a good idea.

We want the news, and we want it quick, and we want it easy.

LOL. You don't want to be critical, but yet you are.

Listen, different message boards do things differently. Some people find it way easier to go to a person's thread to find everything about him. That's the way it is done here, as well as GH. We also start new threads saying someone is Irish; that happens all the time. Then most of the info will go on the recruit's thread. Not all sites do it the same way. DD does it the way you want. I'm not saying either is right; it is just what appeals to you. And I don't think that anyone gets mad when a recruit announces and a thread is started. Not at all.

I see your point, but like I said, new threads are started all the time. To each his own...

No one said you had to agree. And yes, I don't WANT to be critical. That is an entirely consistent statement for a person to make, i.e., he HAS TO be critical, but he does not want to be.

We had the news. And we had it quick. It was posted 4 hours ago in the appropriate place, Boyd's profile.

The purpose is efficiency and it usually works. People know exactly where to look for info on a specific recruit. And the mods don't have to delete or combine duplicated threads. Posting your way adds only clutter to the directory. That doesn't make it easier for anyone.

You complain about the quote system, you complain about how the board is set up, why not trying to work with the system. Then you wouldn't have to complain.

You guys are missing the point

You guys are missing the point

Is it really that difficult to hit the last post button ndftbl?

Hey Wabash, where's your troll bashing club? I think I need to borrow it.

Yes, it is difficult and time consuming if you have to hit the "last post" on every single recruit, in order to get the most recent news on each.

Hey, if you want to do this work and take this time, more power to you.

For my part, think I will stick with the other, much easier and quicker boards, if you guys are unwilling to change.

And the other guy above REALLY missed the point of my email, when he said this was posted long ago. THAT WAS EXACTLY THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE - it indeed WAS posted long ago, but it was a lot of work finding it. It should have been the first thing one saw when they opened up the recruiting board.

"The purpose is efficiency and it usually works. People know exactly where to look for info on a specific recruit." BUT AGAIN, how do we know even which recruit to look at for the most recent info, without going through every single recruit? I know you think this is so easy, but believe me, the other boards are so much easier.

Most of us are much less concerned with "organization" on these boards, than we are with getting the MOST RECENT NEWS, and getting it immediately. Again, you may not agree (because you obviously love this board), but EVERYONE ELSE I have discussed this with agrees with me on this point totally.

Other than this single but significant criticism, this is a pretty good website. But I don't see why we can't all improve.

See ya!

Being anal about having too many new threads is stupid also. Is forum organization that important? Nothing like chasing people away.....

Sorry Junkhead, ndftbl's argument is specious.

Sorry Junkhead, ndftbl's argument is specious.

He started a new thread with a Title “Bookend Florida Cornerbacks!” and he provided a link. He then posted NOTHING about the recruit but vented his dislike for the format of the board. A format that this board started with 4 years ago. A format that GH copied when it started 3 years ago. The same format that Recruiting Planet and several other recruiting boards use. A format that ndftbl is quite familiar with as he's been a member of IrishEnvy since August 2007.

I've worked with Free Form internet boards and it's a nightmare. I was a board administrator on the Irish Recruiting Journal back in the mid to late 90's. All the ND boards trace their roots back to the IRJ. It was started by an ND student on the ND mainframe. The format was Free Form much like NDN is today. Somebody woould start a thread and other posters would cobble on their comments. When a page (computer screen) scrolled by other posters would frequently post the same article or comment, again, sometimes 15 or 20 times a day.

Go over to NDN and post “Chris Martin Considering Visits” and you'll get bombarded with “Japan bombs Pearl Harbor”, “Dewey Wins”, “ Rockne killed in crash”, etc. sarcastically telling you “it's old news” read the older posts before posting. Do it second or third time and you'll get a temporary banning.

There's no way to tell on a free form board what's been posted before and posters like ndftbl aren't going to take the time to scroll through several pages of posts to see if someone already posted that topic.

Be away from your computer for a couple of days on IE and you just need to click on which topics you're interested in. On a Free Form board you have to scroll back through hundreds of posts trying to discern from titles such as “Bookend Florida Cornerbacks” whether Cody Riggs and Spencer Boyd both verballed to Georgia or if Urban Meyer has installed a new defensive set.

The vBulletin Forum software used here, GH, and elsewhere eliminates that problem by allowing separate forums to be set up for different themes or topics like ND Football or ND Recruiting. It also allows subsets to be set up such as '08 Recruiting, '09 Recruiting, '10 Recruiting, etc. so someone looking for a posts on Spencer Boyd doesn't have to wade through threads on Sam Young, Jimmy Clausen, or Joey Getherall. A poster can do directly to “'10 Recruiting” and find a profile of that recruit and chronological articles and comments about that individual.

Nothing anal about it. It's simply tried and true and an hell of a lot more efficient than ndftbl's approach. He obviously has no experience operating an internet board.

He wants the news, quick, and easy. So he says.

The article was already posted under Boyd's name 4 hours before he posted. Several posters had commented on that article.

If ndftbl had gone to the IE Homepage, he would have seen Boyd's Thread listed on the left side of the page under “Recent Posts” at the time ndftbl made his post Boyd's Thread was in the Top 3. He didn't look very hard, did he Junkhead? Actually, he didn't look at all.

If he his Favorite Link on his computer was set for the Recruiting Page. He would have found Boyd's thread in the Top 2. Only three '10 Recruiting Threads had entries yesterday (Austin White and Anthony Barr were the others).

Another poster suggested to him in his thread that he can just click on “New Posts” in the Header. He also could have use the “Search” function.

Ndftbl claims he wants it easy but his way he had to open a new thread, enter a title, and then make his post. The vBulletin Forum way required he only click on Boyd's Thread and hit reply.

If ndftbl wanted things easy why did he chose the title, Bookend Florida Cornerbacks! It doesn't let anyone know the threads about Spencer Boyd, does it?

Here's the title of Boyd's thread on IE, '10 FL Ath Spencer Boyd (Official Offer). How clearer can it be?

The IE title is self explanatory; ndftbl's is cryptic.

As far as chasing posters away, he's no newbie. He's been here for 2 years. He hasn't posted much but he does like to complain and he takes serious issue whenever someone makes a suggestion or explains why things are the way they are. He's had problems with polite posters in the Hendrix thread and the Utupo thread as I recall. On NDN or GH he would have been thrashed and then banned a long time ago. He wasn't banned here. No one even hinted at it. We tend to be more tolerant here. A lot more tolerant than he seems to be.

I don't know whether he's a troll or not but his point was BS. He's been here for 2 years if he doesn't like the vBulletin Forum software he's free to avail himself of any of the other boards that use something more to his liking.

I don't see why the mods should have to change things around to accommodate his laziness. Or that they should have to do more work to re-organize posts so people can find them easily.

Different smokes for different blokes. You are entitled to yours in wanting something different just as a majority of the posters here are entitled to theirs in wanting what we already have.

I certainly think it's a bit of a stretch to say we are chasing people away by not radically changing the forum dynamic to suit what seems to be a minority opinion. Nevertheless, all are welcome to contribute their opinion; they are not, however, free from whatever judgment awaits them from other posters for said opinion.

I thought that the context of writing that we are driving people away was in reference to a whiny little baby who doesn't like that we run things differently than other forums.

That dude has a serious problem, he has been a member for 2 years and he just now figured out how the forums and threads are operated here. And BGIF you are definetly right in your assement that he wouldn't have lasted very long at GH posting like that. Hope he enjoys his new site .

BGIF, that was a friggin' smackdown! I wish I could have said it like you. I doubt that dude would actually read it, but you certainly schooled him and educated me as well on the history of message boards. I know it was long, but if any of you skipped BGIF's post on the previous page I urge you to read it again. You are a credit to this site my man.

You really need to author the history of mankind here? So you disagree, who cares? Your entire diatribe completely misses my point, anyway. If anything, your discussion actually supports it.

This thread is moving away from its original topic. The issues have been addressed by expanding the recent threads module on the front page. Further discussion about this topic should be moved to IrishEnvy Changes Blog, insult hurling and the like should be moved to private messages.
