Per ESPN:

Cut his list to 3: ND, UNC, and OSU after canceling his Michigan State and Arkansas visits

His coach on the three: "I know he really likes North Carolina," Wiggins said. "He was impressed with Notre Dame and Ohio State. He hasn't really expressed a favorite to me. I told him to sit down and make a list of pros and cons for each."

Haynes Has Options

Another fine article by Christian McCollum

Generally regarded as the top long snapper in the Class of 2011, the Cumming, Ga., native is down to four schools – Notre Dame, North Carolina, Ohio State and Harvard. The 6-foot-4, 185-pounder has taken official visits to South Bend, Chapel Hill and Columbus with a visit to Cambridge set for this Thursday.

Best Long Snapper in the nation but at 6-4, 185 Bryce has some serious muscle (55-60#)to add to be lining up on the LOS.

I concur...He'll get eaten up by 3rd string D-Tackles at that size!

If I had this kids offer list I'd pick Harvard hands down. I mean, what are the odds of making a living as a long snapper?

No idea about the odds but NFL teams hire them for 6 -12 plays per game,. If you're the best in your field, ...

Turning your question around, what are the odds for academic success at Harvard with a 1350 SAT?

He'd probably be 95% percentile at Auburn, and an average academic freshman at ND. What would he be a Harvard, 10% percentile?

Does Harvard have a kinesiology program to hide jocks for 4 years like UM does? Can he get 3 credits each for "Walking" and "Jogging" like he could at Tennessee? (I know UTN isn't on his short list. I use those actual courses at UTN as examples of places where football factories lighten the wordload for athletes.) Harvard like any other school probably has easier classes and some majors easier than others. But without a jock program you have to compete in the classroom with the bookworms that don't spend 20 hours a week (or more) on a sport.

No doubt he'd face weaker competition on the field at Harvard than he would at Katzenmoyer U. but the classroom competition would be considerably tougher.

Best wishes to him wherever he ends up and success, on and off the field.

The SAT scores aren't very different from Harvard and ND. At ND I think the 75th percentile is a 1530 and I think at Harvard it is 1600.

Plenty of people succeed at Ivies with way less than a 1350. I know this because of the prevalence of Ivy League lacrosse... I've seen kids get in and do fine with 1100ish. Usually, the GPA/scores average for the team just has to reach a certain level and there are some very VERY average kids that end up being accepted, playing and graduating. A 1350 is a very good score in the grand scheme of things.

I don't know the odds but if your really good your going to be in the NFL. I mean the Bengals had Brad St. Louis for several years just to snap the ball and he was awful. He was listed as a Tight end and I remember I would watch him before every game while he was working with the tight ends and I can't figure out how he ever played tight end anywhere. He couldn't catch a cold. He was absolutely awful. I guess he can at least say he was worse at his main position being Tight End than his real position which was LS. He was terrible. 9 years of ****.

I know a couple of guys who played football at Harvard who were in medical school with me. They readily admit they would never have been admitted to Harvard without playing football. Just texted them and one got 1050 and the other was at 1200. There has been some obvious inflation of SAT scores since then but Harvard kids don't get admitted unless they believe they will succeed, much like at ND. Not everyone does, but some of those lesser students may be operating on you some time in the future - don't worry I'd trust them even after those weekends in Vegas and New Orleans which we would all care to forget.

It's true. I remember the Harvard hockey coach telling my dad that 1200 was the lowest score he could take. 1050 seems a little low considering that hockey is an important sport at Harvard...

Its just going to be sad when we run out of spots and we have to turn
Savon away because we offered a full-time long-snapper.

IMO they would just have one less 5th year returnee, rather than turn away a blue chip freshman.

I think it was in the Commitments thread, but it was estimated we have up to 25 spots for this class.

In any case, it's evident that this kid is a special talent with his pick of offers - Ohio State, ND, even Harvard. As an academician, he will be a great contributer to the off-field success that ND aspires to be known for. As for the on-field exploits - there's something to be said about nailing down the position of long snapping. The quicker the release, the less chance of a blocked punt and a resultant huge play. I'm sure Coach Kelly values the stability and peace of mind that can bring.

So I wish this kid the best - hope to see him as Irish; but wish him success wherever he goes.

I thought Jordan Cowart was enough.

True, the man is great. But if Haynes redshirts this upcoming year (to put on the much publicized and needed 20 lbs), it should be Cowart's senior year in 2012 when he's ready to play. One year of overlap to get the most renowned long snapper in the nation isn't that big of a price to play.

Especially if BK continues his recruiting par excellence and we're strapped even more in future years for spots.

"much publicized and needed 20 lbs"?

He's listed at 6-4, 185. 20 lbs brings him up to 205, light for a 6-4 WR much less the guy lining up across from a 330 lb DL.

I meant more the "freshman 20" rather than the specific weight he would need. However, you bring up a good point - he'll need a lot more weight to make it on the line. But one advantage of the NCAA - he gets a full second after the snap where he can't be touched, unless he tries to participate. My guess is he'll be a statue after the play - his bullet snapping times of 0.6 seconds should give the punter plenty of time to get it off.

No offense to this kid but I really hope it's not us.

Why would you rather keep Nate Montana on scholarship or have someone that will definitely contribute. Did you see the kids offer list? Pretty amazing, I think you should let the big boys do the thinking.

Yes I would because at least Nate Montana would'nt eat up a scholarship for the next four to five years like this kid.

How do you figure he is eating up a scholarship. I'll argue with you about long snappers for ever, because I know first hand what its like not to have a good long snapper. Brad St. Louis was the most lousy long snapper in the history of the NFL and was on the Bengals sideline for several years. He blew several games for us, and in college football it's a lot more important to win a regular season game then it is in the NFL. So if we have a walk on long snapper in a couple of years and he snaps the ball in the dirt to the holder for a game winning chip shot I want you to remember that. Long Snapper is a very important position, and Montana shouldn't have a scholarship to any team in the NCAA. He wouldn't start for any D1 school.

Okay at this point it is pure speculation the Kelly would pull a scholarship from Montanta and having two longer snappers on scholarship is ridiculous just like having three kickers on scholarship is ridiculous. I understand that many teams use walk-ons as long snappers so having 2 on scholarship seems a bit ridculous to me.

Someone posted on II this will be the first time since 2001 that we have 85 recruited scholarship players. IMO six special team players is too many with 2 long snappers, 3 kickers, and a punter.
