I don't know but i think they screwed Ralph over when you hire a coach that is much better then the one you had.

They're goal was to sell out their luxury suites or something. Edsall isn't gonna help do that.

Frankly, I dont get it. I dont think its a better situation for either Maryland or Edsall. Top brass at Maryland sold the firing of Fridge by making assumed promises of a Big Name hire. They made comments that people would understand their logic when it was all said and done.... well... its said and done and I really dont see Edsall as a big name hire ala Mike Leach.

That being said, Edsall is a good coach at the peak of his credibility. Going to a BCS game, beating Notre Dame in South Bend, etc have made his stock very high. Is Maryland really a better job than Uconn? I think Pitt is a much better job than either Uconn or Maryland, and its hard to imagine that they wouldn't have interviewed him for the position now that they are in panic mode.

The whole thing leaves me scratching my head...

I think Maryland is a better situation for Edsall. Maryland probably has better facilities and will pay him more than UConn can. Maryland isn't getting that great of a coach tho.

And he won't have to face TCU in the BigEast. I suppose we can just punch TCUs ticket for the next 20 years unless the BigEast gets their auto bcs bowl plucked.

I don't know about all of that, I am on the complete opposite side on this. First of all, Edsall is a great coach. He has taken that Uconn team from a doormat to a team that could beat Notre Dame in South Bend. From there, he showed it was not an anomaly by winning the Big East and actually showing up to their BCS game. Oklahoma very well may start next season ranked #1 in the country, and Uconn played pretty good against them. There is a reason that he was rumored for the Notre Dame job. I think that Maryland is below him. He is ready to take the next step in his career and Maryland is roughly about the same level as Uconn. I wouldn't even be sure that Maryland has better football facilities, and if they do, then Edsall would certainly have the pull now to get some improvements done (al Kelly at Cinci) at Uconn. As I said before, Pitt would have made total sense for Edsall.

On Maryland's side, all they are accomplishing is hiring another good coach, but paying more for it. Fridge had that team in real good shape and they used the argument that they were going to get a "big name" to take them to the next level as cause for getting rid of him. The problem with that is:

1) Edsall is only a slightly larger name than Fridge and certainly not as big (no pun intended) as... say... Mike Leach.
2) They won 9 games this year. If Edsall continues that pace, he will be off to a tier 1 job shortly and Maryland will be frantically searching for a new coach once again.

I think that they both made poor, short sighted decisions.

First off I wish him the best of luck, I agree I think Leach would have been big name that Maryland officials were referring to, but Edsall is an “OK” alternative. I am more excited about that fact that this takes him off the board for scUM and reduces the coaching pool that they will have to work with. This means that if Jim Harbaugh goes to the NFL this makes that retention of ****-rod more likely, or they hire of a lesser profile coach, either way good news for us.

Follow the money. This is a WAY bigger salary horizon for Edsall. Maryland also has some serious football history which youngsters won't remember. My brother's old coach [Jerry Claiborne] brought high-quality weight-training concepts [which produced the likes of Randy White, whom you'all probably also don't remember], better facilities [remember that it is the ACC that eats Big East teams, not the other way around---there was a reason why Miami, VT, and BC went there], and an attitude that they can be a major player. As to whether TCU would be scary to face: that has to have been a joke, as in the ACC you have to face VT, FSU, Miami, UNC, BC, Clemson etc all the time. Compare that to the general team in the Big East---it certainly doesn't look like a chump line-up. Edsall knows that he has way better facilities, cash-flow, and less struggle-to-maintain in his new job. [I still think that firing Friegen was a bonehead move, and pretty callous when the guy had turned Maryland into something dangerous again, but this thread is about Edsall, so that is irrelevant, I guess...sort of is anyway since it's a fait accompli].

with Edsall-"Fear the Turtle!" may become a reality within the ACC. Hopefully, the Terps will be able to pound on Florida State every once in a while.

im not quite sure what this says about maryland or edsall but it sure says alot about what the college ranks think of Leach. He must be untouchable at this point....

Edsall also is supposed. To be a hell of a recruiter. Maryland area has alot of talent that if he can keep in state could quickly turn them into acc contenders. Good young qb and don't forget that big Cyrus(tackle) is considering Maryland. Maryland puts out NFL talent on a more consistent basis than we do. Good job that edsall could excel at.

I think they just got cold feet with Leach at the 11th hour. So they went with the safe alternative which was The Fridge...Err Edsall. Nice for Edsall, head scratcher for Maryland. Maryland's only 10 win seasons came under Friedgen, I doubt they'll see any in the near future.

UCONN players are not happy with this. ESPN has some player quotes and wouldn't ya know, he wouldn't even address the team right after the bowl game spanking. But, the very next day, it was in the media he's going to Maryland. Hard to believe he hadn't made up his mind prior to the game.

Good hire.

Luckily, we have both Maryland and Connecticut on the schedule next year. Maryland breaking in a new coach with Edsall, and hapless Connecticut (who was never truly good under Edsall, anyway) with what will probably be a mediocre coach, as well.
