CBS Coverage: Rant

Am I alone in feeling the Sun Bowl coverage by CBS was boring & lackluster? They completely ignored any pregame build up to a bowl game that involved a rivalry deep seeded in an hatred for one another and touched very little on the weather situation which may or may not of played a role in this game.

To begin with I had to sit through 10 minutes of the remainder of a blowout basketball game I cared very little about as the Sun Bowl coverage was to begin @ 2 and did not start till 2:10. Followed by 4 hours of some very dry and emotionless commentary from Verne Lundquist & Gary Danielson. I've heard golf coverage with more excitement.

To top it all off there was literary no post game. No celebration coverage, no on the field post game player/coach interviews. Nothing.

Absolutely the worst football coverage I've ever had to endure. CBS should not be allowed to broadcast anything outside of a kickball game.

You didnt miss any sun bowl coverage. it was just pushed back. The coverage was fine, quit trying to find something to complain about.

Didn't have a huge problem with it, probably because we were WINNING. I was tired of the '88 flashbacks. Seems like CBS and ESPN went to the well on that 2-point conversion play 200 too many times. Danielson commenting that he thought we would be back in a BCS game within 2 years helped. :)

In all honesty just about everyone I know personally, complained about it. I wouldn't bring it up for discussion if I felt I was alone in my sentiment.

I agree that fans are getting a little over the top with things to complain about, but if your going to complain I guess this is the place to do it. I thought it was fine. CBS never cuts out of a game reguardless of score. The Sun Bowl broadcast was pushed back. I thought Gary Danielson did a very good job. Let's face it, the second half of the game was boring. ND got up big in the first half and then took their foot of the gas. It was a boring third quarter with very little to go crazy about. Danielson compared Floyd to Julio Jones and AJ Green and gave ND their due. He praised both teams equally, which is basically what your supposed to do it a bowl game featuring two 7-5 teams. We should just be happy with the outcome and get ready for our NBC games next year.

Didn't really see anything wrong with the coverage. The intro piece was nice. They went back and showed footage from the 86-90 games. They talked about the upcoming game in 2012 at Soldier Field a bit.

The game in all honesty was a snooze fest by halftime. I thought Danielson did a good job. The second half was a complete bore until Miami scored with five minutes left.

You and your friends need to find something else to complain about.

I like the little noises Vern Lundquist makes at times during the broadcast. It reminded me of Judge Smails in Caddyshack. So, that part was entertaining.

I'm just glad Gary D only brought up the SEC 3 or 4 times (my unofficial count). I don't think he mentioned Tebow at all too!

I didn't really have a problem with the broadcast either, sorry dude. It's kind of hard for 2 unbiased persons to get excited about a game when the game is 21 - 0 and Miami played so badly in the first 2 quarters.

Every right to complain. Danielson couldn't even get the names correct! He said touchdown catch by Rees. Sorry that was Riddick. No guy, it was Floyd! It really isn't that hard to get names correct, especially when that your job!! It was horrible.

No problems at all. They are known as two of the best in the business.

The biggest problem was that the game got out of hand quickly and Miami wasn't helping things out with their lack of motivation.

No reason to complain, imo.

Thats not what was said at all. If your going to complain, at least have accurate facts and don't make things up. It was a play that Rees tried to go to Floyd down the left side and missed over the wrong shoulder. He said that he had Rees wide open down the middle and then IMMEDIATELY corrected himself and said Riddick. Your flat out picking at the most ridiculous mistakes ever. You obviously haven't watched a ND game on NBC because it happens all the time.

On CBS its for a national audience, and not just catered to ND ppl. I think ppl are used to seeing NBC's coverage of a ND home game; that is where you get the xtra coverage of celebrations, etc.

if the broadcast was bad in parts, I didnt really notice. even when they were up 21-0, I was still watching every play to see how players were playing/developing; so I was still very much into the game (just enjoying it that much more up 21-0)

We never get much respect on CBS or ABC and I suspect it's because of our exclusive deal with NBC.
All in all I thought the coverage was o.k., but nothing stellar. I was losing it when Al Golden spent what seemed like the entire 2nd quarter in the booth, but I'm just sensitive about how much air time the opponents get during a game. It pissed me off when Lundquist said he'd take back the '88 Championship by today's replay standards. WHAT??? The ball was not in the end zone so, had Miami been given the ball back are we to take for granted that they would have scored? What an ***hole thing to say while leaving out any mention of the year Miami got the Championship while compiling an identical record to ours. The only difference being that the Irish beat the Hurricane's in the regular season match up. I think both teams were 10-1-1.

I want to complain about the Tribune, let's start a boycott of that rag, their other newspapers, television stations and advertisers. Turn your back on the Trib!

Great finish to the season, I wish it was late August already.

Go Irish!

The play by play commentary was non existent. They blabbed on about everything except what was going on in the game.

It seemed like the complained about miamis toughness the first half and how good they were and then how determined they were at the end

You have to be referring to 1989.

1. Miami beat us that year.

2. Miami was 11-1 that year. We were 12-1. We did pound the #1 team in the nation in Colorado, however when we were #1 Miami pounded us. 1993 was a bigger sham in IMO because the team that actually beat the other 1 loss team was voted higher at the end. At least in '89 it could be argued that Miami beat us head to head.

No it wasn't. It was clearly recovered on the 1 to 2 foot mark in front of the end zone. That was clear in the replay that Lundquist was referring to. They showed it twice...in slo-mo.

No, I'm referring to 1992. We were both 10-1 and 1. Only dif was; we beat Miami in the regular season. The AP poll gave the title to the 'Canes. That's when Irish fans knew the fix was in and the national media had developed a `thing' against the Irish. That `thing; is still in play.

We didn't play Miami and Alabama won the national title that year.

They will give ground grudgingly to Notre Dame next year too, but if the wins start piling up they will have no choice but to tell it like it is. I expect the same next year from these t$#@$.

Help me out here people, what year was it that our record was identical to Miami and they were given the National Championship even though we had beaten them in the regular season? I believe Lou left very soon after that.

No you aren't.

Before 3 days ago we hadn't played Miami since beating them 29-20 in 1990.

You're beyond help at this point.

The only possible scenario you can be referring to is 1993 when we beat FSU, then lost to BC. Us and FSU each finished with one loss and the pollsters gave the Nat'l Championship to FSU.

There has never been a season where we beat Miami, finished with the same record as them, and Miami was voted the National Champion. Never.

i think your thinking of fsu, in 93.

i thought the coverage was fair danielson did a good job and i like what he had to say about floyd, and riddick, and rees.

lundquist did ok as well, but watching the game in HD was tough when they showed his face.

it did seem a little pro miami especially near the end.

i could give acrap about the commentary if we are winning tho.

My mistake. It was 1993 and it was Florida State not Miami. Identical records and we beat them in that classic game in the regular season and the Championship went to Florida.
At least I had the right state.
I think I've lumped all the Florida teams into the same grouping ever since.
My bad.

hmmm...I didn't notice anything too bad. ND just rolled, so I was so happy about that I just can't find anything to complain about regarding the game. We killed 'em... We won. I'm happy.
