Well, FWIW, he hasn't actually published anything. If he published an article based solely on message-board posts, that would be bad, but as a journalist he should be mining every source available to him. I tend to agree with IrishLax here, let's not harass this guy more than necessary.

I agree with you but in my opinion a screen name on a message board is not a source. You know the ironic part of this whole things is that I thought we went to ESPN to get info about this stuff. It would appear they come to us.

Another thing that bothers me is that when he pm'd Kak7304 it was in reference to him saying that he knew some girls at SMC,fine. He was trying to dig for something about the Lizzy case.

WHY THE HELL WAS HE ALSO ASKING ABOUT DECLAN!

Completely unrelated, one has NOTHING to do with the other. Proves he was just trying to stir the pot.

Dude I think I agree 99% of the time with you...and LAX for that matter...but on the harassment thing...I just don't.

I don't begrudge the ESPN guy his right to turn rocks over wherever he wants. But, if folks take offense to him lurking on this board, and seeking to sniff out a story...its their right to get pissed, and feel offended.

The ESPN guy took an action...guys on the board responded as they saw fit...

I have a fundamental approach, and its simple...fear no reprisal for speaking your mind, and always speak your mind....ESPN guy "Should" understand that. He "Should" also have known folks would resent his presence here, and some would go after him...

If he takes no responsibility for what I would call questionable tactics...and he gets a red a s s and starts grinding axes...well so be it...but folks should NEVER be afraid of guys like that...and should tell them when their words and conduct are not appreciated...who knows...maybe they guy takes it to heart and makes some changes...

Look...the first amendment protects folks from the government jamming them up for what they say or write, and there are laws that protect sources and methods...but there is no protection from persecution by other citizens whom get pissed off at you for your speach, writing, or methods...

I say if he pisses you off...hammer his a s s.

Yeah that guy is like a set of balls with no ****. Useless

Actually, studies have shown that even if a man is sans testies/nuts/marbles/hang-em-downs/gonads/jewels/bollocks/plumbs/Cracker Jacks/stones/tenders/kulbangers/manjingles/cojones/bells/tenders/krackers/man tonsils/love spuds/hanging brains BUT his prostate is still in tact, he will still have a very active sex drive WITH the small potential of still being fertile.

For all you people saying don't harass this guy, he is an investigative journalist trying to dig up some dirt on ND. I for one say harass on. This guy is nothing but bad news trying to break a story and get famous at the expense of loyal fans.

Who does a study like this? And why?

You know what would have worked out for Keller? Getting his degree which was paid for on a full ride scholarship. Wouldn't be serving Long Island's to college kids right now.

Something tells me that video may be the highlight of Fainaru Wada's career though.

I wrote this person using my university affiliation as emeritus professor [and being straight up on my ND degree] to express my understanding that news reporters are allowed to attempt to get information leads by any route they can, short of illegality, harassment, or lack of social concern for the interviewee. I believe that such tactics are old-style investigative behaviors.

I also expressed my concern that some reporters, seen more frequently now in this fast-press world, do not actually do the investigation required. That investigation, if it is about anything but trivia, involves face-to-face interviewing with all responsible parties, a sideline inquiry as to the credibility of those sources, and a serious interaction with the responsible organizations in the issue [ex. police, independent investigatory boards, the university officials, etc.]. Without this whole constellation of input and work, any opinion upon a serious issue which is published from a news platform, is irresponsible. I ended up by saying that I hoped that he would be on the side of the news-reporting angels in his work, and would honor these standards of morality and trust.

Whether such "reminders" of a serious, almost constitutional, duty of the free press will have positive influence on this fellow, only time will tell. Hopefully he didn't even need the reminder, but I sent it anyway. Of course, there's the chance that he didn't read it either.

Hmmm...the universe sometimes moves in strange ways. Just as I was writing the above, the ESPN writer sent me an e-mail assuring me that he was going to look at whether any story existed here at all, do so in a responsible way, and if there was no reason to write further on the topic, after serious looking at it [which I took to mean the university's view as well as all else], then he would drop the idea and move on to something else. As this stands, I will trust the man to his word and wait to see the outcome. I suggest that we do too.

LOL. You could have told him that you were 100% committed to telling him the whole story and aiding him in getting a Pulitzer. Then texted him later and told him that you were too worried that it would be too hard and you just couldn't do it. LMAO

Fair enough. And some of the replies people say he's gotten have been hilarious. But for myself, I won't be getting pissed off until he or somebody else actually publishes something based on anonymous internet sources or something equally flimsy.

The meat grinding process is never pretty. There used to be a butcher near where I lived in Syria... every week they would kill a camel and leave it's head/neck hanging outside the shop (partly as advertising, partly so the blood could drain halal-style.) You could tell what day of the week it was by the camel's state: day one it would be a full neck and head with fur...day two the neck would be skinned...day three they'd cut off most of the neck...by the end of the week there wouldn't be a camel head outside anymore and you (and every child for miles around) knew that right after sundown and evening prayers another unfortunate camel would breathe his last. Very interesting, not pretty.

Even though I knew the camel meat was fresh, I never bought meat from that shop (disclaimer: if I cooked more, I probably would have).

That message is the guy killing the camel. Not pretty, but maybe necessary. Now, if he goes and writes an irresponsible story or makes a crappy kabob...then I'm pissed. If you ask me, the Chicago Tribune article was a good example of a crappy kebob. So was the article in Huffpost calling for Brian Kelly to be fired. Poor reporting resulting from a lack of research. Instead of killing a camel, they ordered frozen meat. For now, they're the ones that deserve the clever wrath of the Irish, not the meat grinder.

Imagery was brutal...I get ya.

I think some folks here on IE assume half-assed journalism is what this ESPN guy was going to do...and they went after him...can't say I blame them based on what I see from the mother ship and a number of other "true" journalists.

But there are some folks here on IE who think it disingenuous, or at least irony they don't want to be a part of, regardless of what the guy writes, should he get info from this fan site...

Either way, a certain percentage of people are going to be mad at ESPN guy before he writes a word because he tried to manipulate them into participating in "killing his camel".

...braver man than I are you that can survive in a foreign land...the food alone would kill me...but then maybe I wouldn't be such a fat A s s...:)

Apparently, this was just a component part of ESPN's push for any news on Declan Sullivan. ESPN reporters have been scouring campus all week reaching out to students who they believe to be in the know (many of whom are on gag orders) looking for something on which to report.
