One other way of looking at things [you will choose whether this is sensible for you or not]: a football team has 22 starters, which they'd like to be real good. And a couple of specialist kickers. It's nice to also have depth, but at least you want these 24 guys, backed up by "24+" decent players. Each class would mathematically have to contribute about twelve such talents. Because it's asking too much for the freshman class to contribute their share of twelve right off the bat, maybe the upperclasses need to be contributing about 15 starters or second teamers each. So, if we think that we're going to get about 15 commitments in a given year that the staff can work into starting or second team roles over time, we are not in catastrophic situations. Even with the current shakiness in certain areas of the hoped-for commits, I still count around that many pretty good looking talents on board.
This is true without considering that a). the recruiting "game" is hardly over for Staff Kelly as far as new signees are concerned, which if anyone is honest in their assessment of history, will likely bear much more fruit by NSD; b). we might well get "other guys" commits to "turn" in time, so this thing is no one way street; c). the "game" is not obviously "over" with some of the de-commits now happening; d). we would be dishonest to believe that Staff Kelly can't coach up "lesser star" players to big time production [Virginia Tech sure as H*** does, and Kelly already has done so].
So, yeh, be disappointed, but please don't overdue it. It's really not worth reading some of the screaming of Doom. I originally came to this site because it was fun to get all the recruiting news. Decommits aren't fun, I agree, but reading hysteria is WAY less fun, especially when it is well beyond the actual impact on the team and our coaches.
