I'm sure this has been discussed before but who has an option for a 5th year and what are our thoughts on who we may keep and how many slots we can fill? I know Gary Gray & Harrison Smith can stay and probably Ruffer too. What are our chances of keeping Rudolph and Floyd? IMO I would prefer to keep Floyd. He can block and catch as a WR. Carlson stayed another year but probably regretted it.

Rudy and Floyd are both juniors and it's anybody's guess if they will return or not. I will say that I think we will be a much better team next year and if they do decide to return it could be a special year for both ND and both of them as well.

Floyd and Rudolph are both juniors, bud. Pretty sure we would be ecstatic if either of them stayed!

Floyd has had a great year both blocking and catching. Rudolph who is the best TE in the country Floyd is Inthe top 5 wrs depending on who u ask but I don't expect either to stay but I'm hoping they do. Next year could be alot better am they may want to be a part of turning around this school

BK said he wanted B. Smith to come back, it would be great if both Grey and Harrison came back we need some veterans around.

As far as Rudy and Floyd, I'm on the record saying both will be here next year. Rudy has made a couple of hints already about his coming back.

It has been discussed a lot elsewhere---Terry is, as usual, pretty smart on this, and we have some other guys who have done some good "counting" of how many retentions needed for opening up new recruiting possibilities.

The key people to me have been the several guys who are on the two deep. Harrison Smith and Gary Gray are "musts" in my mind. My memory is saying that Dever is in this class too, and, if so, you'd hardly let your starting right tackle go. The debate would be in the second teamers like Nuss, Romine, Ragone, Nkwanko. Functional O-linemen are hard to part with, but with the emergence of Watt, the potential of Lombard and Nichols, and the big-time qualities of Hegarty, who knows what the staff will do about Nuss and Romine?? If Rudolph returns, I'll bet that Ragone goes. Eifert, Welch, and Koyack are all there and raring for action. Even if Rudolph leaves, I'd not be surprised to see Ragone let go anyway.

With the emergence of Schwenke, the flexibility of Hafis Williams to play DE [as Nix moves in to assist Cwynar], and the hoped for coming of Tuitt and Springman, I would be very surprised to see Nkwanko be offered a fifth---but I'm not in the war room so this is worth about a wooden nickel.

Forgot about Brian Smith's situation. Up until last two games replacing Carlo, I'd have said no way to a fifth year, but if Kelly/Diaco want to try him in the middle rather than outside, then I'm changing my mind. Even then, though, this motherload of potentially great linebackers we have in stable and verballed makes me wonder if it makes good sense. I absolutely want to see NO strategy that lessens Shembo's presence on the field, and wouldn't mind seeing a glimpse of Spond and Moore next year either [not even mentioning Rabasa, Councell, Grace, [knock, knock] Ishaq Williams...etc].

I don't think their is anyways B. Smith can come back because he played every year since he has been here.

85 Limit

Currently 78 on Scholarship (Including Montana)

11 Seniors

85 - 67 = 18 spots

Potential 5th Years: 9

So, 18 + 9 - # of 5th years + # of people who transfer/leave = Total

I think that's how it works...

Posted this in another thread.

If I can read this scholarship chart correctly... Potential 5th Years are:

Ragone
Nuss
Romine
Paskorz
Gray
H. Smith
B. Walker
Nwankwo
Dever

Yeah Brian Smith is a true senior...he is done after this season.

From what I noticed after the game Romine and Nwanko were taking a lap around the stadium with the 5th year and non-red shirted seniors.

Personally i would love to have Romine back as a third tackle. Depth on the O-line is always welcomed and he did start a couple of games this season and played very well in them. I would also like to see Ragone come back, he is an excellent blocking TE and hopefully with more confidence can become a reliable receive next season.

Potential 5th years would be Gary Gray, Harrison Smith, Andrew Nuss, Taylor Dever, Matt Romine, David Ruffer, Mike Ragone, Steve Paskorz, Emeka Nwankwo, and Brandon Walker.

Likely to receive...Harrison Smith, Gary Gray, Taylor Dever

Toss ups...Matt Romine, Andrew Nuss, David Ruffer

Some might say Ragone but I think he is buried on the chart now, esp if Rudy comes back

I think you left off a couple players. On the game telecast last weekend they kept saying 11 players could apply for a 5th year. I beleive Ruffer is one...

I disagree about Ragone...He saw a ton of action this past weekend blocking, he is clearly a better blocker than Eifert.

ND in CT I agree with you. Just saying that if Rudy comes back we also have Eiffert, Welch and Koyack, and throw in Golic. He's already behind Eiffert and Rudy with Welch getting lots of praise

With Rudy gone then definitely it should be extended to him

Rudolph is very likely, as his recovery could take six months, which will obviously lead deep into draft workouts, etc.

Floyd is anyone's guess, though it's not likely.

He was very average early on, but has come on in the past four or five games. He's probably a Top 5 wide receiver, but it's still debatable.

If it were up to me, I'd get Gary Gray, Harrison Smith and Taylor Dever. Ruffer would be nice, but Tausch isn't a slouch, either.

After looking at the recruits again, I'd bet we keep Nuss or Romine, whoever can float to other positions best. Maybe...Lane Clelland is still around too. Meh

Nuss can play gaurd or tacklle, but Romine is a better player IMO. Thing is Romine took that lap around the stadium with the seniors this past weekend...

BTW I love your icons Big23Head!

Trouble with this discussion is, it is rather pointless to discuss at this point unless we know who is going to graduate and who will be accepted in to a graduate program in order to be extended their offer of a 5th year. Although our student athletes graduate at a higher rate than just about any program in the land, it is not a forgone conclusion that they will be accepted in to a graduate program.

The 5th year at ND is definitely not guaranteed based on who we would "keep" or not.

As far as Rudolph and Floyd coming back next year, I think they both come back. No reason, just my gut instinct.

Yeah, I've said all along Floyd will be back. I think with his injury now that Rudolph will be back as well.

These 5th year guys are really underrated in terms of depth and leadership. I'd give the opportunity to everyone other than Brandon Walker to come back if they choose.

Rudy and Floyd are almost certainly leaving for the NFL

Gary Gray is going to be a top 4 round pick. I doubt he comes back next year.

Probably looking at 2-6 transfers between now and next season.

Personally, I'd rather see us keep 3-4 extra 5th year guys, over taking 3-4 extra borderline recruits in this cycle.

A 10-2 ish season next year will entice some upper level recruits to consider us. And these 5th year guys will be more ready to help in 2011 than the extra 3 star 18 year old we sign in Feb.

I know that is what I meant. I was thinking out loud as I typed. It was meant as maybe Nuss or Romine would not be kept because Lane is younger and will still be around.

With the three decommits and the likelihood of barely replacing those three spots--more room has clearly opened--

So expect most of the fifth years back now--harrison/gary/dever/romine/nuss/

3 offensive lineman & 2 secondary players

Ragone on the bubble--if there is room he stays as well---

Ruffer would be foolish not to go NFL --Floyd and Rudy ---there would still be room for all those aformentioned 5th years even if one or both returned-which is unlikely

Paskrz & nwanko & walker--won't be returning

There still would be room for 5 more commits--assuming no more decommits--but i doubt we can get 5 more---likely at best 3 more unless we go bottomfishing

so there probably would be room for ragone & nwanko as well but hopefully we get enough young blood commits to close that out at 85.

I say keep as many 5th guys as possible for continuity and leadership purposes if nothing else. We are a very young team in alot of areas and if we have the room, then let as many 5th years come back as possible. With injuries and other things that happen in a course of a year, it is nice to have the extra depth.
