Report: Notre Dame Fighting Irish QB Dayne Crist out for season with ruptured patella tendon - ESPN Chicago

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist will miss the remainder of the season with a ruptured patella tendon in his left knee, according to NBC Sports.

Irish coach Brian Kelly said after the game that while the injury is serious, Crist's status is still unknown.

"I don't know for sure. I haven't gotten anything yet," Kelly said. "I believe ... the first report I got was a bruised knee then it was something with his patella tendon. I'll have to get more information before I confirm, deny what it is. It is a severe injury, I can tell you that just seeing Dayne briefly."

Kelly also said the Notre Dame career of leading rusher Armando Allen could be over because of a hip flexor injury that may need surgery.

Crist left the field in the first quarter of Saturday's 28-27 loss to Tulsa with the injury to his left leg. The injury likely occurred when Crist took a hit from linebacker Tanner Antle at the end of a 29-yard run. Down 7-0, Crist was knocked out of bounds by helmet-to-helmet contact but immediately grabbed his left knee. The junior's left leg was put in a brace and he was helped to the locker room by Irish training staff.

Following the 2009 season, Crist had surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right knee.

Freshman Tommy Rees came in, drove Notre Dame to the 10-yard line and connected on a touchdown pass to Michael Floyd. The PAT was blocked and returned for a two-point conversion, which gave Tulsa a 9-6 lead.

Rees finished with an Irish freshman record 334 yards and four touchdowns on 33-of-54 passing, but was intercepted four times, including one with under a minute to play on second down from the 8-yard line. Reese was trying to find Floyd in the right corner of the end zone, but Tulsa's John Flanders plucked the ball from the air with 36 seconds left to secure the upset.

Nate Montana will begin working as the backup to Rees.

Well, I'll sleep better this week

I am so happy that you will sleep better. So many people on here have been so critical of Crist and his play. Well..., you can sleep better..., people like you can now sleep better at night now...., Now we have lost our QB that you all criticized ruthlessly, we can now focus our attention at a young freshman QB who played his heart out and criticize his efforts. Can't wait till the Rees bashing commences!

Call me crazy but I think ND is better off with Rees. After seeing Rees take it Navy's first string defense--after Crist couldn't do a thing--plus most of what I saw this week, I think Rees might be a better fit.

Someone on here a couple weeks ago was speculating that the rash of hamstring injuries might have something to do with our conditioning program. Any thoughts along that line after this new rash of injuries?

I can't believe Armando is done too. Sigh. Can we just call an end to the season now?

Tell ya what Gipper......first off you can back off. When did I ever "criticize" our freshman quarterback?? If you read other threads, i praised him for doing well. Second, until Montana proves himself as anything but Joe's kid, then you have no argument.
"People like me". You don't know a thing about me. So before you go off on this high and mighty rant.....save it. Don't have the time. You can continue to post crap in the recruiting threads like, "I hope we get this guy" and my favorite, "This sounds like an "RKG". Wish in one hand and crap in the other. We are a 5-4 team right now so just know that the clouds above aren't made of cotton candy and they aint spittin out Skittles. this team stinks right now. Accept it and pour the Kool Aid down the drain.
