Irish lax,
You remind me of those dreamers last year who were convinced that Jimmy was coming back to ND because he was wanting his degree. We see ow that worked out.

As for my subjective statements. Go check out who is projected on Scouts inc as the number one TE drafted 2011.
1. Kyle Rudolph*, Notre Dame
2. Weslye Saunders, South Carolina
3. Mike McNeill, Nebraska

Go Check out Rivals Power Rankings TE. Number 1 is Kyle Rudolph.

As for comments about dropping balls, some of this is due to injury and the rest due to a QB who is placing the ball in poor places.

As for you folks talking NFL lockout, this will get resolved.

So, IF Kyle is progressing well by spring, he is going to the NFL draft. I would love to be proven wrong, but this is a financial decision that his family will help him make.

In the end, I wish him the absolute best!!!! Kyle has been a total beast at ND for his entiire time here. Thanks for bringing your talents to ND. Whether you play another down at ND or not, you are in the elite class with the McAfee's, Carlson, Fasano.

To the Bogtrotter: anyone who has the Lia Fail as their avatar has to be full of the blarney so they need to be taken both seriously and with a grain of salt. I think that Kelly's press comments were simple honesty themselves, and that although he suspected that Kyle wasn't totally frank about how much pain he was in, Kelly was leaving the call to the med-staff---no way he wanted to injure his All-American stud. So, I'm not "in" on the conspiracy theory of Kelly setting us up for the inevitable. Kelly wanted to get through the Pitt game and rest Rudolph alot afterwards in hopes that he'd be full go for the powers at the end of the schedule. Actually he said something very like that.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------and to Jonesman: hope you're wrong; fear you're right. And add Casper, Hart, and Bavaro at least to your TightEndU list.

if he is the #1 TE come draft time, he's gone.

its simply not a smart business decision if you are the #1 TE on the board and dont come out. are you gonna go back and improve your draft status? Only thing a #1 TE would take on by coming back for another year is risk, or dropping in the draft, or both.

nothing is for certain, and I would like to see him back (of course!) but I kinda think he is gone.

I'm not saying your right or wrong but there is a big difference between a QB who had a career year and if he came back would had to have adjusted to a new coach and a new system and an injured TE who will be out 6 months putting his participation in the combine in serious jeopardy. I'd say it's 50-50 he cones back

I'd say with a hammy injury-depending on how he heals, actually does hurt his chances on coming back. I think people hit it on the head, if he is still high on the draft boards you'd have to think he'd be taking the $$$ that is on the table and not risking re injuring and really dropping his stock-as he should. This will all hinge on how well he heals.

phgreek,
You are one of the only realist I have seen on here. Big Rudy is going to be playing on Sunday's next year unless this hammy takes longer than expected to heal. If he is showing good progress by spring, the NFL guys are going to be drooling.

This kid is the best TE in the country hands down. It is not even close. If the hammy is recovering nicely, there is not another question about this kid for NFL scouts. Look at the measurables:
Speed A
Hands A+
Size AA+
Heart AAA+

I would love to see him done the gold helmet next year, but it is NOT the right financial decision if he is recovering nicely from the hammy. He will get his ND degree and the risk of another injury is just not worth it.

Thanks RUDY!!!!! We all are pulling for you!!! GO IRISH

I wish we were wrong here...and am hopeful there is some way where it would be beneficial to the kid to come back and play...but consider Rudy has been active for three years...he has had a full college career...whats he got to prove to the guys at the next level? As it stands I can't see where coming back makes sense...if he were asking me I'd tell him to punch if he's the #1 or #2 TE in the draft. I'm guessing he will be #1...so long as he heals, and shows he is moving along...I thinks he's gone, and I think he's wise to be gone...

Back at ya on the realism thing...nice to see.

I feel horrible for the kid . He hasn't seemed right all year so I hope he can finally rest and heal this thing for good. As for the draft I hope he and Floyd learned from Clausen last year and dont believe mock drafts and rivals and scout crap . I know this kid has first round talent but why chance going in 3rd or second if you can go first with 1 killer healthy year. Either way thats his choice as a fan I just want him healthy.

You return to improve your overall draft stock.
Just because he's the number 1 TE doesn't mean he's a first or even second rounder.

If he can't run or workout come draft evaluation time it could cost him more money than staying in school.

He comes back, dominates again, runs a 4.5 40, runs the receiver trees at the combine, gets drafted top 12, set for life on his rookie deal (even with a rookie cap).

He leaves and possibly: can't workout for the scouts, gets drafted in the late second, must wait 4-6 years for a new contract that hopefully comes for him.

Leaving early injured could cost him more in the long run.

This hurts, but at least it came in a rebuilding year. Imagine if we were undefeated and ranked in the top 5? This would hurt even more then. Here's to a speedy, and healthy recovery!

this loss particularly hurts because we wont be able to see the best TE in the nation, possibly best ever at ND. And if he leaves for the nfl, we'll always talk about rudolph in a "what could have been" way.

Obviously thats just me as a selfish fan talking, i do hope him a quick and healthy recovery.

i have always been excited to see what ragone could do, and eifert is a stud, also golic will be cool to see out there. i think out of all 3 tho ragone will surprise some folks. i dont think they'll go to welch.

Clausen did have a killer healthy year though. He just fell. It was an anomaly for a player to fall that much. Clausen didn't make a mistake in leaving. Rudolph wouldn't make a mistake in leaving either.

The injury makes that much more likely

The injury makes that much more likely

playing next year will raise his draft value
well that sucks, but in all honesty he should not have played the last two weeks. Kumara playing in a tight end set does not sound like a horrible idea at this point

If he is not a 1st rounder or very high 2nd rounder, I think he comes back. With the injury it is hard to see anyone taking him in the first 40 picks. The odds favor him returning, but it could be wishful thinking on my part.

Jermaine Gresham went #19 overall after not playing a single game his senior year. Rudolph's stock will not be that much affected and he will go pro.

Has anyone seen one of Rudy's latest tweets?

"Thanks for all the prayers and get well wishes.. It means a lot! Ill be back stronger than ever. Go #Irish"

I'll be back? I'll be back??

I knew it... Rudy and Floyd for one more run in 2011!!

How so full of the blarney?

Kelly is always honest. And direct. And I am sure everything you said is so. Your points are well spoken; we have no disagreement.

Nobody said “conspiracy” or “theory” let alone “conspiracy theory”.

Kelly is that intuitive. (He saw what was happening and predicted the outcome.) Kelly is that astute politically. (His mind works that fast, he knows what he needs to manage. That is how he started out, in politics.) Bank on it.

What you and I might have to think through occurs to Kelly on the spot.

Here is my take: Lia Fáil came to mean “Stone of Ireland” but it also meant “Stone of Destiny.” Therefore, "Fianna Fáil", "the Fianna” were, warriors, or an “Army of Ireland" often rendered as "the soldiers of destiny." I look at the Irish this same way. I see a return to greatness as their destiny. And this is where it all started.

Which way were you facing?

As I recall (and my recollection may be faulty – the were a number of Guinness and Jameson filled days both before and after my visit to the castle) there were no real options.

After climbing the spiral stairs to the top gingerly negotiating my way to the stone (golly, gee-whiz, it was raining and a wee bit slick) the attendant had me lay on my back and inch my way out as he held my ankles. Were you to wriggle out face down I suppose you could kiss A stone, but it wouldn't be THE Blarney Stone. I don't know if I was facing North, South, East or West ... couldn't locate the position of the sun through the clouds.

As with Old Man Mike, most of my family and friends thought it was a bit of overkill. Carrying coal to Newcastle, as it were. For 20 odd years they've been looking for a stone for me to kiss so I'd "just shut up for once."

Jughead did you say something?

lol.

OK I'll respond. He said he'd be back, but he didn't say where. I took it to mean he would heal completely.

Yea, I saw what the deer did. Its a positive tweet that leaves him a lot of wiggle room. And nobody ever made a decision that involved millions of dollars and their primary career for life based on one tweet anyways.

On the other hand, I was introduced to the wonder of the Notre Dame twitter network. Kind of hilarious, especially their collective fascination with the miners ("its kind of like watching the earth give birth to a full grown man).

Up. I thought about making this point before I shot the question, and I said, what the hell! You would have been facing up; but our mind takes the simple message and applies our experience. So we want to assume a compass direction. And it’s soo much easier to misinterpret things someone else said when communicating with the written word only. (My eyes glanced up when I conceived the question, as with most of my best conceptions.) Thinking about it, I am betting that’s what leads to 90% of the altercations, miscommunications, and pissed-off hard feelings on this site.

Hey, dshans, Jim and I will toast more than one to you this weekend, wish you could be there. We are really going to try not to explode the turkey this time.

See what I mean about communication? Way to go Bó fianna!

I really wouldn't call it a anomaly when it happened with the quarterback before him the browns saved Brady from going to 2nd round . I like Jimmy but really he is doing nothing as of now to to show he's even worth a 2nd rounder. One more year of seasoning really would have helped him new coach or not. Course hindsight is always 20/20.

I wish Kyle Rudolph the best as he is having surgery today, probably right now, and I don't care whether he comes back to ND or not, just that he makes a full recovery. He is a quality individual, an incredible young man, and a warrior second to none! Someone was asking for a silver lining earlier. Brought this over from the Theo thread:

Though Rudolph is a better tight end at 75 % than almost anyone in the nation is. He hasn't been at his dangerous best since Michigan or Michigan State. I think those mismatch situations disappeared, especially considering how good the linebackers we have faced over the last four weeks have been. Also, it is incredibly hard to block, particularly in the open field with a bad hamstring; you can never get lower than the opponent. Also you are slower.

Kyle has been Dyane’s safety blanket. I wonder if Kyle out, especially with a couple of weaker teams coming up, might not actually help the overall progress of the offense. Relying on a player that began struggling more and more, may have negated one of the previously strongest facets of the team. What do you think?
Ask me again in 3 weeks!

Seriously, it's a possibility.

Part of that progress has been the development of quarterback Dayne Crist in seeing the entire field. Crist and offensive coordinator Charley Molnar said that the loss of tight end Kyle Rudolph could accelerate the quarterback’s progression in that area. Kelly agreed that Rudolph had been a security blanket for Crist, but didn’t necessarily agree.”
