Oh it was great watching College Football Final. Mark May had his ND hat on for the Helmet Stickers segment! I haven't found the picture yet, but when I do, it's going to be my avatar for a long time. Dibs on it, right now.

And fellas, a REALLY bad guy would have never done that. Sure, it deserves a good laugh and some relief by us all, but May is a more complex person than we've given him credit for---plus Lou's been a really good ambassador to him. --- I am more than 100% in favor of us getting every major media person at least neutral if not sympathetic to ND just for Machiavellian "political" reasons --- i.e. good vibes with potential high school recruits watching TV.

Like it or not, Mark May is usually right about Notre Dame's chances.
Don't shoot the messenger.
When ND first got the NBC contract, C. Collinsworth was the color announcer and didn't hesitate to point out ND's problems. He wasn't anti-ND, he was accurate, but he was soon replaced. He is (IMHO) the best announcer in all football and a worthy replacement for Keith Jackson.
Apparently our fan base can't stand the truth.

I'm sure they both respect each other and their accomplishments, but hate gets ratings. They may disagree on many points, but I definitely believe they respect and enjoy one another.

The thing about Lou is...he has a singular focus. He wants to win. If winning is defined by ratings, and ratings get better with some disagreement and Drama...he'll poke whatever gets May, and encourage May to do the same...the fact that May is there or not there probably matters a tinkers damn to Lou (not saying he doesn't like and respect him)...he's a prop...put anyone in that chair and Lou would find a way to stir it up.

JMHO...

I think May usually is close in his analysis, but when someone tells you your baby is ugly, and seems happy to tell you, its gonna **** you off...he knows it. Same with Herbie...he knows ND fans are fuming...did it deliberately. Now the backlash...that probably opened his eyes a little...He realized bungholes like him and May might have written the fan base and the team off...but he quickly found out we're all still here...hehehehe, and maybe he got his feelings hurt a little, hehehehe

I still haven't seen the comments by Herbstreit. I know that he said something about ND's defense playing like a High School defense, but I haven't seen the footage, myself, to see what context he made the remark in. However......... I think Herbstreit has developed into a great analyst/game caller. He shows almost no overt bias at all. He usually just tells you how it is, and I have rarely heard him disrespect any team. I may not always like what he has to say, but I think that he lays out the context of his comments well. I can almost always follow the logic he uses to come to his conclusions.

Look how much attention May gets for the network from outraged ND fans

and Lou stirs up the ND haters, so the network gets the best of both worlds.

Honestly, they seem to get along find except for when Notre Dame gets brought up. Then they turn from normal, moderately well-informed commentators into a blabbering idiot and (I hate to say this) a rambling senile old man. But then they instantly turn back to normal in the next segment.

Which just tells me that all that controversy between them is largely put on for both of them. I'm sure Lou really does have a higher opinion of ND football than May, but when you hear Lou saying the team is going to NC game and May predicting 5-7 in the same year, obviously there's a disconnect here from reality on both sides.

The context was this: they were doing their weekly picks and when ND vs BC came up, the other 2 picked ND. Herbstreit then came up and said something along the lines of "I was going to pick ND, but I watched some film from their game last night and their D was so slow it was like watching a high school defense."

The other analysts looked a little shocked and then everybody moved on. Anger ensued.

As far as Lou and Mark's relationship....In Lou's last book, he said that he considers Mark May one of his best friends and he would want him as an usher at his funeral.
