North Carolina coach Butch Davis suspended defensive tackle Marvin Austin indefinitely on Wednesday for violating unspecified team rules.

"This decision is not a result of the ongoing NCAA review," Davis said in a brief statement issued by the school. "Marvin has violated team rules and has neglected his responsibilities to the team."

As far as the ND incident, there was a lot of money and sex. Didn't she also embezzle quite a bit from her employer to cover the gifts she was giving? And didn't she play name the baby father as the one with the best looking pro contract? She needed prayers, and help (psychological and legal) – and so did anyone who believed her, and used her as an investigative source. Also needed (a lot of) help. Sorry, the way I see it ND did nothing wrong, you will rarely see me second-guess or offer this kind of criticism, but Malloy was wrong (heart-stoppingly, incredibly) on this one. He should have taken it to anyone not slow enough to get out of the way!

According to ESPN on tv just now, up to 9 of Carolina's starters on defense may not play in the opener. Brent Mustberger said the game might be more interesting if LSU started its second string against them.

John Blake has resigned his position on North Carolina's football staff, effective immediately, school officials said Sunday night.

Blake, who was in his fourth season working with Butch Davis, said in a statement issued by the school that he stepped down because "my presence has become a distraction" to the university.

"Consequently, I have determined that it is in the best interests of my family, the university community at large, and the football program for me to step down from my position as associate head football coach," Blake said.

The NCAA has spent much of the summer investigating whether defensive lineman Marvin Austin and receiver Greg Little received improper benefits from agents.

That probe has since expanded to include possible academic misconduct, and 13 players did not travel to Atlanta for Saturday night's game against LSU. Also drawing the NCAA's interest is Blake's longtime friendship with California-based agent Gary Wichard.

Since I had posted the following on a different thread [and it was sort-of lost there], maybe I should re-relate it here now. I was at the Virginia Tech scrimmage two weeks or so ago. My brother, who is a VT insider and an old teammate of Coach Beamer from way back in the late 60s, took us right in to see the assistant coaches in their offices. One coach was extremely frank. He said this guy Blake was known among the coaching staffs as "Black Jesus" [instead of Black Santa as the players refer to him], and that he "comes into your living room with a Bible in one hand and a sack of money in the other". He said that this guy's methods have been well known by the opposing staffs for a long time. The coach felt that it was long overdue for the NCAA to be taking action on UNC [and other programs the guy had been at]. Probably the most interesting part of the "scrimmage" for me.

And Davis will say he knew nothing about it. Silly thing is, Carolina played a great game without the questionable athletes. I went from wanting them to lose by 70, to getting upset when their tight end dropped the pass in the end zone on the final play.

When your associate head coach, recruiting coordinator, and defensive line coach resigns because of probable involvement in this, it is not a good sign for the head coach. That's really hard to shake for Butch Davis, because when someone that involved in everything you do looks guilty, it looks like the head coach had no know something.

I understand completely.

The alumni are extremely pi$$ed off and the university has never had an NCAA investigation (AFAIK). Combining those 2, you could easily understand why Butch's days are numbered.

Last time I heard they were still investigating the tutor, but she refuses to cooperate with the school.

If it goes any further, I would assume they would just subpoena her, but as of right now I don't know how hard the investigation is pushing the issue.
