Sounds like he became expendable, and anything he did in the past (pre sanctions) will now be used against him.

Why would a college athlete injured at practice have to rehab on his own?

Absolutely correct. Schollys are now like gold at U$C... any scholarship playaz with the Toejams who get hurt during practice or look at Lyin Kiffen with a stink-eye will have their free ride pulled faster than a pie eating contest at a tapeworm convention.
