USC's depth issues are already hurting them. Due to a bunch of players being hurt (like 5-6), Kiffy-boy was forced to abandon his normal 2-a-days for the rest of camp and have only a walk-through session (no pads) in the morning, followed by a full practice w/ pads in the evening. Their beat writers and Kiffy are calling them "NFL style" practices. The first time they did this, the evening session was spirited and they had their best practice of the year (Tuesday).
So yesterday was just one practice, full contact drills and all. Well, 3 guys got dinged up, but then when they did their goal-line work (a very physical workout), super-soph DE Nick Perry (freshman AA who led them in sacks last year) suffered a high ankle sprain that scared the beejeezus out of everyone as he eventually had to be carted away after limping off. He's only out for 2-4 weeks (although we all know how a high ankle sprain can linger), but the message was received by Kiffy.
So Kiffy-boy has now suspended all full-contact for the rest of camp!!! (except for their 2 scrimmages.) He's citing low-numbers and the need to keep their players healthy. There will be NO TACKLING except for these next 2 Saturdays.
And so it begins. We all saw what happened in 2007 when CW had to do the same thing due to Ty Golfingham's pathetic recruiting #'s. The players weren't developed properly, and although the defense was ahead of the offense, the entire team definitely lacked fire, fundamentals, physicality, etc. USC has much more talent than ND 2007, but this is not good for them at all.
The writers are lauding Kiffy-boy for doing this, but I'm telling you, you can't run college practices like NFL ones. It doesn't work. We all went through it. They'll still win a bunch of games b/c their schedule is the weakest its been all decade, but they won't be the SC of Carroll, no matter what SC fans try and tell you. I predict 9-4 for them, with things getting worse before they get better...
EDIT: The Trogans had 14 scholarship players out of practice tonight. They had QBs running routes with the receivers b/c of injuries to that group.
