The behavior of the SBPD has to be an embarrassment to the city. This Keystone Cop SWAT team act has gotten very old. As far as the State Alcohol & Tobacco Commission is concerned, that is an example of bureaucracy gone mad. What are Indiana residents paying taxes for? The gov't would gladly send these guys off to die for their country but lock them up like crack whores if they have a beer. Check that...they leave the crack whores alone and focus on the students drinking the evil beer!!!

Tell the kids to shut it down and if they don't comply come back and nail the renter/owner with a fine.

Oh wait, that is what a reasonable person would do.

Hell it is American beer. Here in Canada we save that for the elderly and children.

This was funny!!! Barney Fife runs rampent at ND!!! Nip it!!!!! Nip it in the bud!!!!!!

Some of us pigs did not become pigs so we could arrest under age college drinking at parties. Some of us actually became pigs so we could deal with problems that largely effect our society. I know that sounds crazy but it's true.

Allot of crooked politicians started out with noble intentions as well. No doubt we are indebt to first responders however.

I agree to a certain extent. Not because Nate was involved. But the whole arresting issue. That unfortuneatly, is liability issue in our liability happy country these days. Because of my birthday being in October, I was an 18 year old Senior in HS. In my state at that time 18 was legal to buy beer and neighboring Louisiana was legal to buy alcohol. So, on Senior skip day I was one of the ones chosen to get the booze. I and two others were busted in a state park just being teens. Foolish teens, but teens none the less. The county sheriff himself caught us. He told me that since I was 18, a legal adult, I could be charged with about 20 counts of contributing to the deliquincy of a minor. A charge that carried a minimum of 6 months and a $500 fine for each offense. 30 years ago this year, I was so scared. He told us if we poured out the booze and cleaned up the area, he would let us go. But if he caught us out that day again, we were in serious trouble. I truly appreciated the break, and I wish in a way it could be that way again. I lived in a small town, where cops were more interested in keeping kids straight than sending them to jail. But that was in a different time then, if any of these kids had gotten hurt after the cops had left there would be problems. It is now a lose-lose situation. Without knowing the exact circumstances that were occuring when the cops were there it is premature to say what should have been done or what should be done by law enforcement or ND. I hope, if all it was was a party with no injuries or property damage, that ND takes that into account and doesn't come down too hard on the kids.
Not so much that Nate was involved either but, what the hell is a big name recruit
gonna say to this. It's hard enough to get one to come to south bend but we are gonna have cops arresting kids for this trivial stuff please. Maybe we cant fight with B.Y.U for every great football player that doesnt havent have sex or drink.

Let me explain why recruits won't care. Kids get in trouble all the time. They get "arrested," fined, cited, whatever. It happens to engineers, athletes, frat boys, whoever. This happens to thousands upon thousands of kids across the country every year. You will get this at any school. It just so happens that this was reported only because it was Notre Dame.

Best example of Notre Dame getting special treatment was last year. Who remembers last year when a Facebook picture of Clausen with a solo cup was all over ESPN and Weis had to respond to it? Not even proof of alcohol... just a solo cup. And Weis basically said "give me a break." It gets reported because Notre Dame truly is a special place and the whole nation cares about us (even when we're bad).

So no recruit in their right mind is going to look at this and say "ooo I don't want to come to South Bend because kids get drinking tickets." You're completely off on that and you're completely off on thinking that athletes at Notre Dame don't have the exact same athlete experience as any other school. Parietals are optional. There is St. Mary's. Enough said. Hell, my boy Ryan Thang has his girlfriend in from Minnesota freshman year and she literally slept over in Stanford Hall (took showers and everything) for a 3 day weekend and our rector couldn't give a shit. And he was just a hockey player.

You clearly not only have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to an athletes decision to pick a school OR what it is like to play a sport at Notre Dame so please don't provide misinformation.

I don't know man, I think you might be wrong with respect. I think it won't effect things too much but some kids will definitely think twice because they like to get their part on just sayin.

First of all... I respect that you're reppin' NoVA. I'm working in Reston now and grew up in the area. So much love to ya.

Second, I agree. The social aspect is huge. Which is why ND just doesn't work for a lot of kids. And there are definitely a lot of kids who like to get their "party on" as you put it. Now, if kids come up there and the players aren't throwing parties or anything because BK went zero-tolerance... I agree with you we'll probably lose some people. So really, the best way to put it is if BK/ND punishes the kids harshly it will affect recruiting some. On the other hand, if people act like this never happened and live life as normal then I don't think it hurts us at all.

What they need to do is get a house like Pat Koontz used to own. That place was sick. Out in the middle of the woods off campus so there were no neighbors to annoy. Huge lot so parking was never a problem. Awesome bonfire pit. That place made summer school fun.

That is true I don't but I do know that kids drink. I grew up drinking in boston with guys from Harvard and even few dudes from M.I.T..( Some of those nerds can throw it back). I just think that while no student should get a free pass. I think the police should know that those football players they arrested or ticketed made rivals, espn, sportingnews, and buttload of others. Notre Dame is a honor for any parent to even dream thier child can go to. I want every kid to be safe also I have 5 kids trust me I do. I just think that A little thought should be made to the school and the kids before they arrest them is all .

Bizarre Twist

Bizarre Twist

Check this neutered:

Prosecutor: No charges against Notre Dame students who supplied alcohol
State law requires minors be younger than 18.

South Bend Tribune: Prosecutor: No charges against Notre Dame students who supplied alcohol

... the prosecutor's office has determined no charges will be filed against Lavin and the other person because Indiana statute requires that the minors furnished with alcohol be under the age of 18. All of those arrested Saturday were 18 or older, according to the release.

Lavin is the hockey player who threw the party to celebrate his 21st birthday.

Bizarrre. I grew up in the bar business, have lived in a number of states, done business n 47 of them and have never heard of anything like this. A minor was simply someone under the age of majority. If you furnished a minor and you were subject to arrest/fine. Guess they have double minors in Indiana.

The owner of Bridget's was fined and lost her liquor license for serving 18-20 year olds with fake I.D. Does she get her money back now?

Bizarre twist for sure, and it goes back to my original question about the difference between "under 21" , (and now apparently, over 17), being furnished in a private location, vs. the underage purchasing in public. Although the 18-20 crowd may not have purchased alcohol at Bridget's, they were supplied in a public place that sells alcohol.

Geez. I guess now my question would be, what happens if a father and his 17 year old son want to share a beer at home after the son's graduation? Is the father now a criminal?

Not if the son was conceived while the father was intoxicated.

I think they did make good choices by deciding to ride that shuttle home. If anyone made a bad choice it was the SBPD for arresting those students.
