I hope it wasn't Michael Floyd or Ragone. With one incident each this off-season...we're in trouble if they get another one.

Oh, and underage drinking? Please. Can't believe we have another weak-ass issue to deal with with the SB Police.

I FUCKING HATE SBPD AND THE ISEP!!!!!! Last year we got a noise complaint at 10 PM on a Thursday.... we had 8 total people at our house INCLUDING the 5 of us that live there. We weren't drunk, playing music or anything of that matter... simply outside in the hot tub and grilling burgers. $300 fine, no questions asked. Cop was a TOTAL dick.

And then I also got a $20 fine the next day for parking my car facing the wrong direction on the street for literally ten minutes while I ran in and printed something. Came out to the cop writing the ticket, tried to reason with her... nope.

And the worst part about everything is that they have time to harass the good kids who go to the University that donates millions upon millions of dollars each year to St. Joe's County but they don't do ANYTHING to stop the real crime in the city.

The University needs to start sticking up for the kids more on this shit. I do not want another Yeatman incident where an incredible athlete (and the difference between us having a national championship in lacrosse) gets their sports future ruined because of a bunch Pigs.

A party in South Bend was busted by police overnight, sending 43 people to the county jail.

It happened at a home on Washington Street. South Bend police were called in to respond to the initial complaints and the Indiana State Excise Police were called to the scene over underage drinking.

The excise police tell NewsCenter 16 that 43 people were arrested, and one was sent to the hospital for lacerations in his hand. It's not known at this time if all of the arrests were just for underage drinking.

Among those arrested are eight Notre Dame football players, including Nate Montana, the son of football great Joe Montana and back-up QB; Lorenzo Wood, a cornerback and 2010 recruit; Chris Watt, a sophomore offensive guard; Robert Toma, a 2010 wide receiver recruit; Nicholas Tausch, a sophomore kicker; Ta-iler Jones, a 2010 wide receiver recruit; Steven Filer, a junior outside linebacker; and Tate Nichols, a 2010 recruit.

Also arrested are Tim Abromaitis, a standout junior forward on the basketball team; Eric Atkins, a 2010 basketball recruit; and Steven Summerhays, a 2010 hockey recruit.

So far, there has been no official word from the University of Notre Dame regarding the players' arrests.

All those arrested were held overnight in the St. Joseph County jail.

We'll have more on this story as soon as the information becomes available.

This makes me ridiculously mad. The whole philosophy of the excise police makes me furious - their sole purpose is to look for underage drinking parties... This stuff has to stop. You know what the most ridiculous part of this is: "All those arrested were held overnight in the St. Joseph County jail." WTF!! This is why I hate the Indiana drinking laws - you held kids overnight in jail for underage drinking? Are you insane?

I'm seriously going to be pissed off all day. God I hope Jenkins/Swarbick do the right thing here. Underage drinking is a JOKE. They basically ENCOURAGE you doing it in dorm rooms. None of these kids should get more than a Reslife.

And I personally think Jenkins or someone needs to have a face-to-face with SBPD and tell them to start doing their real job and stop harassing Notre Dame kids.

Apparently some of the football players blew 0.0, but were arrested anyway. I am sure the details with come out shortly.

as a longtime SB resident, every summer SBPD ruffles up some ND players to make it look like they have a job. Nothing will come of this, its a yearly tradition.

Ok, I'm not saying any of this is right. But if you're a ND student or more specifically a football player, wouldn't you know that the cops are especially hard on underage drinking in South Bend and do whatever you could to avoid that situation? Just not very smart in my opinion. And I wouldn't want to be any of these guys when Kelly gets a hold of them.

Kind of ironic that I just read part of a story in the summer 2010 Notre Dame Magazine about the pleasant relationship between Notre Dame and the city of South Bend. This pisses me off. How about telling the partiers to quiet down?

The current article differs slightly from the one posted previously by finghtinirish68. It has a few extra KEY words, ...

All those arrested were held overnight in the St. Joseph County jail until their blood alcohol content had dropped to legal levels.

I'm not sure what those 10 words mean exactly. Does Indiana have a legal blood alcohol limit specified for a minor of 0.00 so they were held until their blood alcohol level was 0.00? Or is the writer implying that they were legally drunk and they were held until their blood alcohol dropped below that legal limit?

One case would be underage drinking, the latter would be public intoxication. Different consequences.

Ya think. They arrested 43. How many people were there? Use your heads people, the South Bend and the Excise folks have demonstrated their lack of tolerance for underage consumption.

Was Yeatman too long ago for anyone on a $200,000 scholarship to remember?

Longo's gonna work some sweat out of some people. At least those ResLife leaves eligible to participate in extracurricular activities.

The thing is with Yeatman... his first offense was DUI and then he got busted for being at a party where the cops literally kicked down the door when most were asleep. I don't think, or at least I hope, that ND was hard on him only because a DUI is serious and the second offense was serious only because it was a violation of his probation.

Because otherwise it is hogwash that ND basically encourages underage drinking on campus but punishes it if you get caught doing so off-campus.

The behavior of the SBPD has to be an embarrassment to the city. This Keystone Cop SWAT team act has gotten very old. As far as the State Alcohol & Tobacco Commission is concerned, that is an example of bureaucracy gone mad. What are Indiana residents paying taxes for? The gov't would gladly send these guys off to die for their country but lock them up like crack whores if they have a beer. Check that...they leave the crack whores alone and focus on the students drinking the evil beer!!!

Tell the kids to shut it down and if they don't comply come back and nail the renter/owner with a fine.

Oh wait, that is what a reasonable person would do.

Hell it is American beer. Here in Canada we save that for the elderly and children.

I am not a big fan of present day police in any city... I'll be honest about that... many stations have become tax collectors and not much more...

but these kids broke the law... it's not like they were chewing gum drops... if you break the law, no matter what you do... you must be mature enough to know shit might happen... sorry, blaming the police here to me is weak.

With that said hopefullly res life stays out of this and lets kids be kids... though if they don't, who is really to blame?

It's not so much the underage drinking itself that I am concerned with, but rather how this criminal activity impacts climate change. Opening just 1 can of CARBONATED beer discharges approximately 3 g. of C02 into the atmosphere (dependent upon the temperature of the beverage). This is compounded by an additional discharge of methane some hours later. And I don't even want to get started on the styrofoam cups in which the beer is often consumed and how that impacts the ozone layer.

thats the way i see it, its the law to not underage drink, so a law is a law no matter how little it may seem. it's not like they are going to prison for life now, they had to spend one little night in jail.

not that big of a deal, it's just a matter of what punishment comes from Notre Dame now. it shouldn't really be hard on them, but only time will tell and hopefully a lesson learned

Would your concerns be allayed at all if it came to light that the beer came from a keg? That no styrofoam cups were used, only steins, glasses and beer bongs? That the resultant methane was put to good use, in lieu of tiki torches, as the evening went on?

I recall a stretch of time while I was at ND ('70-'74) when the legal drinking age in Michigan was 18 and 21 in Indiana. The State Patrol would occasionally camp out on US 31 at the border and wait for cars with out of state plates and ND parking stickers on their windshields. More than a few students were fined or arrested for underaged "possession by consumption" of alcohol, whether impaired or not. When the coffers got low at city hall, vigilance seemed to pick up.

Yeah basically my sentiment is that as long as ResLife doesn't come down hard on these kids it's no harm, no foul. But too many times have I seen Notre Dame drop the hammer on someone who didn't really deserve it. Yeatman deserved his first suspension, the second one he blew a .01 and was asleep when the cops kicked in the door. McAlarney got kicked out of school for weed... where as you have kids like Travis Reed at Maryland get caught with all kinds of stuff and get the NCAA minimum 2 game suspension only.

From talking to the sparse few people I know in the athletic department (and none of them football guys) it doesn't sound like anything is going to happen besides the normal ResLife slap on the wrist. You have to remember that ND doesn't care about under age drinking at all (if they did they wouldn't let you do it in the dorms with no penalty) and the only reason they would come down on them hard would be if this wasn't their first run-in with the law (a la Yeatman).

It just still ticks me off that SBPD does NOTHING to stop actual crime in the city and instead focuses on the easiest way to make $$$.

Kelly has stated that he is still waiting for all the facts to come out and that punishment will be dealt with internally. I highly doubt ResLife will be involved to the point of suspending kids for this...as Steve Wiltfong reported that a few of the kids blew 0.0 and all were first time offenders. I'd imagine that Paul Longo is going to play the role of Res-Life in this situation...

Notre Dame cops suck. Focus more on the murders and rapes that are always going on in that pretty rough city and less on college kids drinking.
