This is my high school. The kid is a monster. Same school that Will Hill went to a few years back. His academics should be solid because they don't mess around there. The schedule was also a tough one this year. The other thing is that St. Peter's is really becoming a powerhouse in Jersey. It would be nice for ND to make that connection.

Also, when I went to St. Peter's Prep, I took an hour train ride to get there. So it's not uncommon to have kids out of the area, even just for academics.

Rich Hansen, head coach at St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.), is no stranger to Notre Dame recruiting his players. This year, it's star running back Savon Huggins who Notre Dame covets.

"I think the things that Savon is looking for are all present there," Hansen said. While Hansen pointed out Notre Dame's storied tradition and history as major selling points for the Irish, it was once again Kelly's recruiting charm that seemed to stand out.

"He's a dynamic kind of guy, very, very much in touch with his players. I think he's someone who will be well respected and well received in high school offices around the country."

I should post this article here too:

WaveDomer: you sure you didn't go to Delbarton with that name?

Per Steve Wiltfong, he is trying to set up a visit in June with his parents and fellow NJ standout WR Miles Shuler and his parents.

If they come with their parents, that would obviously be huge and would put us in a very nice position...

Scheduled a visit June 27th-28th but will not be visiting with Shuler, who will visit another time.

Very good news, if you haven't seen any of Huggin's film, check it out. He has all the tools to be an elite back at the next level. He has a great burst when he gets the ball, excellent vision, doesn't go down easily, and can catch the ball out of the backfield. This is the back that would best fit our system IMO.

Visiting Wisconsin & ND during his trip out here (27-30)

Not sure if he plans on committing or not... doesn't appear so

Visited with his family. Said it reminded him of St. Peter's Prep (his HS) - really liked the tradition and camaraderie. Will be visiting Pitt on his way home. Fear the 'stache, but we're looking good so far.

Announced his top 10:

Florida, Georgia, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Stanford and Wisconsin.

Rated his Wisconsin visit a '10 out of 10'. Great kid who has great things to say after every visit. One thing that worried me was that he said that he was shocked how many things there were to do in Madison, and that he'd never be bored there. Apparently the coaching staff took him around the city and both he and his parents were impressed. Needless to say, ND is not exactly the hubbub of entertainment (but things have improved, and we always have Chitown). He did say he loved how ND was just like his h.s., so we have that going for us.

Long ways to go, but still in the ballgame, as expected. Now we need to see if he gives us an OV. No OV = no chance...

Will cut it again by the time his season starts. My guess is earliest chance of commiting is on a OV.

His dad said that he won't even take OVs until after his h.s. season b/c of his heavy workload in school and his team's eyes on the state ring. And they are being meticulous about this thing...so don't expect him to commit until very late in the process.

Nice article from ISD. Father makes some interesting quotes about his decision and what it will involve... since we run the spread, im guessing we are one of the teams he is talking about with his quote.

Recruiting Week in Review
Written by Joseph Bradshaw Monday, 05 July 2010 06:30

...“Just a lot of it depends on how a lot of these teams look throughout the process, and how their season goes,” explained Savon’s father Wendell. “A lot of these schools say they run the spread and they’re going to switch to a stronger run game; we’ll be looking to see if they do that opposed to if they don’t. Just seeing how their season goes, that’s going to make a major impact on which way the pendulum swings at the end of the day.”

By holding off on his decision, Huggins will also get the opportunity to become more familiar with the coaching staffs of the schools recruiting him. He places a premium on developing a strong relationship with the coaching staff that eventually wins his signature.

“I’ll be looking to see how I feel about the coaching staffs at each school and the relationships with the players,” informed Huggins. “Every school I’m looking at the academics are really good. I’m just trying to get a good feel for all these coaches.”

Huggins and his father have been virtual nomads this summer as they’ve visited numerous schools, trying to gain a good feel for what each offers. They did that in order to keep his senior season as free as possible from distractions.

“With the rigors he goes through getting up to school on a daily basis, and his academic schedule is going to be heavy this year in reference to the A.P. courses he’ll be taking and his football schedule and them having an ESPN game also, taking officials throughout the season, if he does, it’s going to be brief,” Wendell said. “I don’t think he’d get the feel of what an official would be like if he went during the season. They’re looking to go all the way and come home with rings this year. He’s strongly focused on that and I don’t want him to deviate from that.”...

Thats the quotes, More info at the link

Isn't St. Peters H.S.the same school David Rivers the star point guard for Digger Phelps? That guy was a magician with the ball.

This guy looks to be a special athlete as well.

It's a slow recruiting time, so I thought I'd share a tweet from a FL recruitnik last week on August 5th:

Savon Huggins and family just spotted with coach Meyer on the field. All smiles as Meyer high fives Huggins.

Ugh. All part of the game and probably not a big deal, but still...ugh.

Damn LA, I got pumped when I saw this thread updated from you. You're a huge disappointment.

Ray Rice did pretty well there, just not what you'd expect from a 5* Top 100 recruit. Kudos to Schiano for his work to keep talent in-state

I have to agree. If not us then Rutgers works. Just as long as he stays out of the state of Florida. I still hold hope if we can pull his friend Shuler.
