I woudln't have a problem with a change at at the goal line. Instead of the standard set. Remember, Washington had a great running QB out of the standard set and we stuffed Locker many times at the goal line. It would be fine to throw in some wrinkels at the goal line and give those different looks.

I would love to see Bubba at ND. If Dayne can get things going, and then hand off to Andrew and/or Bubba we may be set at QB for awhile. And then the Irish will be back.

Go Irish!

If ND gets Bubba, I think we are set on QBs for quite some time with Crist/Hendrix/Massa/Bubba

Here's to hoping!

I would bet if ND gets Bubba one or maybe two of the three (Rees, Massa, Hendrix) transfer. Too many QBs sittin' on the bench.

I think that two of the QBs may leave, but I don't see Rees, Massa, and Hendrix all leaving... And its too early to see there full potential, so I'm going to speculate as to who will stay/leave.

Either way, Bubba would make a huge addition to ND.

We have seen this before... let the best QB come in and compete. The good ones will welcome the competition and rise to the occasion...the spares will transfer to Uconn and Cincy and play Linebacker.... what ...too soon?

Don't throw QBs under the bus that aren't even on campus yet (other than Rees).

I don't think you were singling out our QB prospects, but transfers are a part of the game so they are bound to happen.

plus they knew that there were three quarterbacks coming in plus Hendrix himself was a big time recruit there was a chance he could have sat anywhere plus massa was the last to commit and he knew the competition and chose nd anyways bk loves having lots of qbs

Your exactly right, Massa obviously has the attitude that he can come in and prove himself through stiff competition, and I personally love that kind of attitude in a kid.

He is still going to visit Nebraska next week, but Nebraska pretty much killed its chances of getting Starling to sign by joining the Big 10. He told Scout last week that one major draw for Nebraska was that it played in the Big 12 and that lots of their games would be near his family (KU, KSU, Mizzou), and that if they were to join the Big 10 that would be a major drawback for them. Also, several ND recruitniks have said that ND is pretty far out in front for Starling.

Soooooo, with the news that Nebraska is now joining the Big 10 officially, Starling looks to be a near-lock for ND barring a 10 star visit to Nebraska. However, the big hurdle will be baseball. He also told Scout that if money will be involved, that could changed things as far as baseball is concerned, and Keith Law just listed him as a top 15 high school pitcher next year.

One more thing. Bubba said that ND has told him that they will only take one QB, even though they know he might play baseball instead. I kinda get the feeling that they're OK with taking no QBs this season b/c of deoth and the fact that they are in really good with a few very good QBs already from the class of 2012...

Let's all just hope Bubba comes to ND. He could be great here, and further refine his baseball.

Of course, you couldn't judge the kid over a fat paycheck.

I am well aware that we have plenty of QB's in the fold right now but the idea of not taking a QB every year (despite being in play for two of next years best) still leaves me with a knot in my stomach. Thats how we dug ourselves into a hole at a few positions now with no REAL backup for Dayne right now, a very iffy secondary, a hurting OL AND DL for the past few years. You CANNOT miss at any position any year due to injury, transfers, academic disqualifications or lightening striking (wish you were here Matt!).

The Irish fired baseball coach Dave Schrage today. I know Bubba was fond of the baseball staff, so it may have some on his recruitment

This kid has had to deal with some real craziness in his recruitment. Here's hoping he picks ND and everything works out for him.

If anything it should have a positive effect. Addition by subtraction.

Schrage was 119-104-1 at ND and 595-657-1 record over 23 years. His .533 record is worse that Davie, Willingham, or Weis.

Swarbrick's predecessor Kevin White didn't make the best selections in several areas. I look for Swarbrick to run another solid coaching search that will make Bubba smile.

1) ND is going to get a good baseball coach, which should make that issue a wash.

2) If money is going to be a factor, there is simply no point getting our hopes up even if he committs.

3) Only signing 2 QBs in 3 years was what got ourself into this mess. The years they signed does not make a difference. Next year we will have four scholarship QBs on the roster with experience in the system, plus a walk-on and two converted high school QBs. That is not the same as having one scholarship QB plus a WR and a DB who played a little QB in highschool (before Rees agreed to come early and Montana came back). Unless Crist gets hurt and none of the freshman pan out, we are fine for next year at that position.

4) While we all seem intent on underestimating Hendrix, he got scholarship offers from Florida, Tennessee (Kiffin), Ohio State, Wisconsin, Miami, and Stanford. If you read about him, a lot of people thought he actually got lucky with Kelly coming because he is big and strong and a good runner.

Same here. Swarbrick will find a good one no doubt in my mind. We lost some recruits d/t Weis' firing, but most were already on their way out or just didnt fit the system. Bubba fits our football system to near perfection with his mobility and arm strength, and im not a huge baseball nut, but how many systems in baseball dont work for a fastball like Bubbas?

I heard Kelly wanted him 100% commited to football and if he wasn't then to go somewhere else. Just pure speculation seems like a pretty likely scenario

First thing I wondered when NU jumped was would it help there recruiting this year... no one is gonna make the decision based solely on that but with tight races like this case it certainly could have been the final chip...

It'll give them a boost for sure... anyway do we now push hard for any other QB or do we just shift the focus to the defense this year and get a QB next year??? Really though, this doesn't hurt THAT BAD... we do have what.. five scholly QBS on the roster for this year and next... something like that

I loved Starling, but really it's not like our QB situation is doomed.

We'll still have Dayne, Montana, Hendrix, Massa, and Rees...

Plus ND is in a good position with a couple of QBs in the 2012 class.

I wish Bubba the best of luck at Nebraska.

Yeh I know we're loaded at qb right now...but starling sounds like an absolute freak athlete.
i guess he probably would've left for mlb within 2 years anyway so its probably not that big of a deal.
i did hear that Justin Worley is camping with us at the end of the month and has us in his top5.kid looks impressive.

Wow... that kinda sucks. He seemed really high on ND, i knew he was going to visit nebraska, but to commit to them just like that is well.... strange. Wonder if the Kelly "committed to football thing" is true.

Nebraska wins fight for ESPNU 150 quarterback Bubba Starling

Bill Hodge On The Trail
6/19
Premier signal-caller Bubba Starling of Gardner Edgerton (Gardner, Kan.) has committed to the Cornhuskers for the Class of 2011.

Rated No. 6 among quarterbacks nationally by ESPNU, the 6-foot-5, 195-pound Starling also considered Notre Dame, Alabama and Kansas.

Arizona, Baylor, Kansas State, Louisville and Texas Tech have also offered.

As a junior, Starling passed for 1433 yards and 18 touchdowns (missed two games with a separated shoulder). He rushed for 1381 yards and another 19 scores.

Starling is a top baseball prospect who is considering playing both sports in college.

Nebraska now has 11 pledges.
