"Jake Golic. On paper, yes.

Ragone also has 2 years left not one as I wrote earlier, if his knees hold up.

And Roback is more likely than Heggie."

What about Alex Welsh?

Alex Welsh I never heard of. Alex Welch I forgot about. Good catch. Mea culpa.

Welch is no Rudolph but he's comes in more highly thought of than Golic and Eifert. I though Eifert's career was over with his back injury. From reports this Spring Eifert apparently is demonstrating he's fit to play. I wish his well as the trench warfar gets more violent and goes one on one with the likes of Ethan Johnson.

ND has bodies for the TE slot but after Rudolph and Ragone it's wide open for the 3rd slot. BGI commented in March that Welch could well challenge Golic, Eifert, and Burger for the #3 slot next fall.

I'd like to see Rudolph stay for his Senior season but he could well leave early. Ragone showed a glimmer of his coveted high school speed when he ran down that Safety from behind last fall. But he's playing on rehabbed knees. Every player is one snap from no longer playing. It goes with the sport. Guys with rehabbed knees and repaired spines run a higher risk.

From what I've read Koyack could challenge for PT as a true freshman.

Per Scout, Koyack just named his top 2 - OSU and THEE Fighting Irish of Notre Dame baby.

This kid is a bona fide stud and would be a GREAT get...

I almost creamed my pants when I found that OSU(and not PSU)was our main competition for him. OSU uses their TE's as extra offensive linemen for the most part. Cincy had 3 different TE's with more receiving yards than OSU's starting TE.

Tressel is committed to getting the TEs more active with his QBs this season.

He plans on having the TEs warm up the QBs pregame instead of ball boys.

I think ND's chances of getting Koyack all depend of the success of Kyle Rudolph this season...

And I have a feeling Rudy is in for a HUGE season, so this would attract Ben to ND.

any one know why PSU is out of it?

also, given the fact OSU didnt take a TE last recruiting class and we did...it might be something Koyack will consider (better chance for playing time)

...even if that playing time is just blocking in tressels mind numbing offense.

I'm shocked this kid isn't a PSU lock. You'd love to get him to ND, but as soon as I saw his hometown I thought he had Dakota Royer written all over him.

Anyone think we have a chance at a commitment this weekend with Koyack? He would seem to be a good successor to Rudy.

Koyack is down to a Final Two schools, ND and OSU. Neither have a current track record with throwing to the TE for him to guage his future at either school. It would be prudent for him to see how the season play out at both schools.

OSU threw something like 16 passes to the TEs last season. That wasn't unusual that was fairly typical. In '08 Ballard caught 13 passes for 150 yds. In '09 as a senior he had 14 catches for - 150 yds. In '09 Stoneburner as a redshirt freshman caught 2 passes for 30 yds.

I went to a OSU site to read how their TEs were used and learned that poor Coach Tressel has told Koyack he plans to use the TEs more. He wanted to use the TEs more in the past (other than as the third tackle on the LOS but his TEs lacked the talent to be effective pass catchers. Sounds reasonable until I checked Rivals past recruiting classes going back to '05.

In '09 OSU signed Fragel a 3 star #11 TE (not too shabby #11) he had no catches (I'm not sure he played). IN '8 They got DiLilo a 3 Star #28 TE (granted not top talent but he probably would have equated to anything Kelly had at UC but I digress). OSU got another TE in '08 Stoneburner a 4 Star TE who was ranked #3 TE by Rivals, - TOP TALENT. In '07 no TEs. In '06 Ballard was a 4 Star, #8 TE. In '04 OSU got a PAIR of 4 Star TEs the #3 ranked guy, Hoobler, and a second 4 Star, the #4 ranked TE, Nicol.

All those TEs were recruited and signed by Tressel. They have caught more balls had they been playing in Coach Holtz's triple option.

Stoneburner who was the #3 ranked TE in his class (the same class as ND's Rudolph) caught only 2 balls as a REDSHIRT Freshman. Two years ago he caught 74 balls fir 1271 yds and 15 TDs. He caught 63 as a HS Jr and 33 as a soph. In 3 years of HS ball Stoneburner caught 170 passes fro 2,779 yds and 25 TDs. Two years later he has a career total at OSU of 2 receptions for 30 yards.

By comparison Rudolph in two years has 62 receptions for 704 yds and 5 TDs and he missed 3 games with a broken bone.

One advantage to going to OSU is they don't have a lot of bodies or proven pass catchers ahead of him.

ND has a a recent history with Fasano, Carlson, and Rudolph as prime time TEs and has a trophy case full of the accomplishments of Hart, MacAfee, Bavaro, Brown, Smith, et al but those were in the past. Even Rudolph's 62 career grabs are passe. Weis isn't here anymore.

What will the new offense do with the TE? Same as Weis? More active? Line up in the slot?

Will Koyack see what he needs to know on Saturday? If he going to make an informed decision he really needs to see the season play out, doesn't he?

If Koyack was to make a commitment now he'd have to do based upon Kelly's UC offense with greatly inferior talent to what Tressel has had for the past 9 seasons at OSU. In '07 Barwin had 31 receptions for 399 yds. In '08 Guidugli caught 18 balls fro 229 yds. In '09 Guidugli had 27 receptions for 364 yds while Alli caught 12 balls for 156 yds and Robinson caught 10 balls for 171 yds for an '09 total of 49 TE receptions for and almost 700 yds.

Looking at their Rivals Rankings Barwin, Guidugli, Alli, and Robinson were all 2 Star UNRANKED TEs when they signed with Kelly and UC. Ben Guidugli was 6-1, 207 far from the Stoneburner's 6-6 235 .

One can only imagine what Kelly can do with 4 and 5 Star TEs and ones 5 inches taller than he's worked with.

thanks for the insight BG (as always)

i agree with all your points.

i really think OSU is going to sell hard the "immediate playing time" aspect to going there, while ND is going to rely on rudy's production this season (which i am quite confident in) to entice koyack.

i have to ask again though, why is PSU out already?

Article on ESPN Insider, but I don't have access to the rest:

"It's down to Notre Dame and Ohio State," Koyack said. "I was thinking about it and thinking about all the schools that have offered me. I decided I'm not going further away than Notre Dame and Ohio State, and Penn State has been out of contact. Notre Dame and Ohio State are the two schools I have the best relationship with."

Koyack is supposed to be close to a decision between ND and OSU.

Some interesting tidbits:

Tressel demonstrating his commitment to the TE has Pryor throw a 23 yd TD to OSU's TE Stoneburner Saturday in their Spring Game. BuckeyeNation and TE recruit Nick Vannett were agog with all that TE activity. In 2009 Stoneburner caught 2 balls. Now he's almost matched last season's total in just one game.

Meanwhile in South Bend Rudolph snared 4 passes for 39 yds playing sparingly with Crist then rested. Ragone had a big day with Montana catching 6 passes for 75 yds and a TD. Backup TEs Tyler Eifert off back surgery caught 1 for 11 yds and Jake Golic has 1 reception for 11 yds. ND TEs had 12 receptions out of the 30 ND receivers had for the game. OSU TEs caught 16 passes in the entire '09 season.

Nick Vannett who was supposed to be in South Bend but cancelled due to severe weather in the Midwest travelled to Columbus according to Bill Kurelic because Nick heard the spin that Tressel was going to use the TE as more than a 6th offensive lineman.

Also in Columbus, Florida recruit Jeff Heuerman a 6-5 240 4.75 unranked TE picked up an offer from the Buckeyes. Heuerman's dad is a UM grad (basketball). Heuerman has a bunch of offers but not from UF, MIA, nor FSU. His best offer from the SEC is Tennessee, no UF, no ALA, no UGA, no LSU.

Buckeye fans are ecstatic that Vannett and Heuerman could fill Tressel's need for 2 TEs in this class.

Kelly's Post Game Comments on TE

Kelly's Post Game Comments on TE

Kelly noted he was impressed with his tight ends at the conclusion of the spring.

The tight end position as you know – we don’t take them off the field,” he began. “We need that kind of depth.
“Ragone’s a tough kid. He’s going to help us; he’s going to move the chains for us and do some things that allow us to get into two tight ends as well. He’s very important in terms of what we’re going to get into during the fall.”

Any questions, Ben?

Koyack is better than both of those guys. While I would gladly take Vannett because he's a good player, Koyack is an absolute stud that would be a jewel to this class.

He talked about his spring game experience, and he loved it. And yes, he definitely noticed how involved the TEs were, and he was loving that too. I'm not saying he's a lock for the Irish, but he went from not being very close to making a decision yet to possibly making one very soon. If in a few days the luster hasn't worn off yet, I think he'll commit. But if he goes home, kinda lets the visit sink in and realizes that he wants to be 100% sure, then Ohio State still will have a shot at him. We'll see...

Pull the trigger Ben, leopards don't change their spots and OSU's leopard only has 1 spot because that how many times they've thrown to the TE in the last decade. Our single set TE gets at least 5-10 passes a game, not per season. And a double TE stack.......WOW. Could help you follow Kyle to the NFL draft like the others before him here @ TE University.

Seriously, I can't even think of the last really good TE OSU has had........c'mon Ben.......and as an added bonus we would pluck one from under Joe Pa's nose......that alone makes me want the kid!

"Definitely coming away with a really good vibe," Koyack said. "I just have to take some time the next few days to think about it. I've just been kind of thinking the whole thing over so far, and possibly maybe sometime soon (I could decide)."

Possibly maybe? Ha love this kid.

Apparently ol' Brian Kelly can recruit players that are rated higher than 3 stars ;)

Committed Per Scout.

Welcome Aboard. Welcome to TE U

B-b-b-b-b-b-b-but, he's a 5 star player! Brian Kelly only recruits 3 star players with offers from the MAC! Koyack has offers from the best programs in the country! No way would Kelly go after such a big fish...he's not an 'RKG' because he's too good! You must be lying Polish!

Seriously, what a huge get!!!! Pumped up for this one. You add Lynch in June to go along with blue-chipper Jordan Prestwood who already committed (and the rest of the 4 stars), and you have the making of a really, really strong class. This is how Alabama recruits, fellas. They get their 5 stars and surround them with a bunch hard-working, hungry guys that fit their system and they turn the team into a machine. Loving this!

It's crazy how just a couple of months ago there were people on this site and other ND sites screaming that BK couldn't recruit on a national level and that all we were going to go after were low-level midwest recruits. It was silly then and it's even more silly now. Well done BK!

And welcome aboard young Koyack!
