Swarbrick just released statement saying ND will not join a bowl game. It was thoughtful and well said, but I'm sure we'll still get hell for it...

I think it's stupid, but oh well. The Tate and Clausen era ends?

I really wish they would have played, for my own selfish reasons.

Guess I'll have to stick to my DVR'd games until next year.

agree

agree

The new coach may have said lets not do this, sometimes the extra practice isnt really worth it, this case seems to fit that. Along these lines I would like to say that Jack may have his search going the way he wants it, I for one trust this guy and the way he's handling things. Of course I know nothing but my gut tells me Jack is on the job and maybe this non bowl appearance is more of a good thing. Also it may be as simple as the guys saying we just dont want to play in a non important bowl.

Swarbrick Press Release

Swarbrick Press Release

Statement From Jack Swarbrick On Potential Participation In A Bowl Game

Notre Dame athletics director comments on if the Irish football team will pursue a bowl game bid

Dec. 4, 2009
<!-- LINKS TO RELATED PAGES BEGIN --><!-- LINKS TO RELATED PAGES END -->
Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick:
"After meetings again today involving our coaching staff as well as the leadership group representing our football team, we have made the decision to remove ourselves from consideration for any postseason bowl game this year. "Notre Dame institutionally always has been a strong advocate of the bowl system, and we sincerely appreciate the bowls and individuals representing them who reached out to us. However, the unique circumstances surrounding our program at the current time prevent us from making the commitment required to compete in a bowl game. If the landscape had been different, we would have been thrilled to take part - and we certainly look forward to being part of the bowl system in the years to come."

BGIF, as one of the mods I'll ask you if you agree with me that Jack seems to be doing this correctly, not to put you on the spot, really I dont mean it that way but this guy has my trust. What do you think/ am I allowed to ask a question like this? The way its been handled makes me think he knew all along how this search would go.

I think this is garbage. If I weren't getting ready for my son's birthday party, I'd have more to say.

Think Mike Anello didn't want to go to a bowl game? It's about wearing that blue and gold one final time for the seniors, and as a team, for stepping up when times are tough and representing your university.

Couldn't agree more. Enjoy your boy's party.

I agree with this. I don't get why a team wouldnt want to play in a bow.

For everyone who says we will get embarassed, thats a pussy excuse and if thats what the team thinks than that is the reason they are .500

this ticks me off, its football baby, play the f-in game, ND & football go hand in hand and for this school to turn down a potential football game is ridiculous, im sure between the coaches we have we could create a game plan, and if we were going to Detroit how much money would we lose? don't other schools lose money when they go to bowl games?

Why play in a pizza bowl or the GMAC bowl? Why should Clausen and Tate risk injury if they're leaving for the NFL and that goes double for returning players. They're saving face and looking forward. No heart! Excuse me but did this team give up playing against USC or any other team when they were behind? You're comment is completely off base and you should be kick in the teeth because of your own selfishness. Wah! I don't get to brag to my coworkers or friends about my team winning some toilet bowl game..

Fact is this isn't the first time ND turn down a bowl game and probably won't be the last. Get over it!!

Will Clausen stay or go? Well have anyone else notice in the last two games before half-time, when ND had the ball and took a knee, Clausen sprinted to the locker rooms ahead of everyone. Did anyone else see that?

You know, I really wanted them to play another game ... only 'cause I just like watching ND football. But, I'm strangely okay with the choice. I'm not sure how the discussions went with the staff and players, but I like the idea of deciding 6-6 is not good enough to go to a bowl. (though, that may not be their reasoning) We have a lot of change ahead of us. It's time to move forward. I may be tired of our recent futility, but I'm excited to see what lay ahead. Hopefully it's better than what we've been through over the last 20 or so years.

I think this will reak of ND thinking they're too god for a lower tier bowl. I would like to know how the players and remaining coaches felt about this decision. A spirited team would want to play. I can't say that this team is highly motivated as they never played 4 quarters in a game so far this season. I can say our offense never threw in the towel but I can't sign up to that for the defense after wacthing them get pushed around against UConn and Stanford.

If we win the Stanford game are we accepting a bowl bid? All I know is that with no season ending win to get through the next 9 months Swarbrick better get Stoops or Meyer. All the other candidates are B choices which is still better than a B choice OC.

Don't like the decision, but I guess that's why they didn't ask me. I remember a few years back when they declined to play Auburn in, what was it the Independence Bowl? Auburn still hates us for that. Would have liked to see them play one more game and at least end the year on a positive note. Oh well, thank you seniors for your contributions to the ND football program. Sorry you didn't go out with a bowl win.

No other bowl eligible team in the country would do this.

After they fired Ty we played in a bowl?

I think it sucks. 15 practices out the window and another game.

What if Clausen and Tate get hurt? WTF? Well Clausen got hurt going out to eat with his family. I hate this bullshit about getting hurt.

Im guessing quite a few soon to be NFL players will be on the fields this bowl season.

This team has thrown in the towel and feels sorry for itself.

Honestly I think they should play with the current staff. But, it don't surprise me. They have done it before. I think they have not hit rock bottom yet and the bowl game would be the start of it. Let's see what coach they get and how many turn them down. It could get embarrassing. I have been a fan for 36 years and have never been as disgusted as I am right now. I think it will be a long time before they are top ten again. If they ever get there.

It is very disappointing that we will not be playing. As far as getting shit goes... We will get shit for not going. We would have got shit if we would have gone and thumped a smaller program for having such a terrible regular season and the ´who cares its the pizza bowl` moniker. If we would have gone and played mediocre then it would have been a shitstorm. We will always be the most criticized team. I bet next natioanl championship we win people will find a way to bust our balls and claim that we aren´t that great. I am really unhappy that we are not playing in a bowl game, but I think it was inevitable. It´s going to be even more disappointing if Clausen and Tate leave.
