Bud Elliot had an interesting tin foil hat take on this whole situation. Basically that the NCAA was expecting PSA to pass the senate and knew it would be a fight in the house. Therefore they purposely rolled out 5 for 5 in such a way and at such a time that would create these kind of legal challenges. Giving the NCAA a smoking crater to point at and declare the need for federal oversight

Not me, I’m loving this. It’s not the college football of my youth, but it stopped being that 25 years ago when they let the SEC start paying players without consequence.

At least now we have a real chance at winning it all.

Except for conference realignment killing the geographic regionality of the sport and the creation of a obviously compromised committee to determine playoff at-larges, I like nearly every change to college football in recent years. I much prefer NIL and pay-for-play over the under the table stuff the sport was marred with for decades. I also like 5 for 5 over the redshirt/blackbox waiver system that never seemed to go our way. 10-15 players nationally getting to return to play for a 6th year one more time because the NCAA didn't extend the waiver they should've isn't going to cause me to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I'm not that upset by these NFL guys being granted a year. I was riled up at 1st, but it's not that many and it's just this one class so they can get in on 5 for 5. There's been no indication this will be a thing going forward. I think it's less of an issue than I did at first glance.

Conference consolidation and realignment is about the only thing I hate about CFB right now. But, I've hated that since the Big 8 brought in the Texas schools and effectively died, so that's not new.

This is a one off event so on some level the end of CFB talk is silly, the question is how many one off events do we keep having that the NCAA can do nothing about and what is the next one

All the NIL/transfer/whatnot stuff is largely noise that fades away once the games begin.

I think what risks damaging the sport most is if:
A: The middle-class P4 schools truly can't compete financially and it devolves into 25 powers and everyone else being cannon fodder. The fan bases of the cannon fodder will tune it out.
Or B: If the playoff gets so large it renders the regular season basically meaningless, like in college basketball and the NBA/NHL. That would suck.

We're potentially not far from either of those scenarios. But we haven't reached them yet.

That bothers me more than anything. It was exciting when these teams stepped out of conference to play a team from another conference. Now they play each other every year or so. The anticipation isn't at the same level.

Think for a second how drastically it has changed over the past few years. You've got players working out with NFL teams, not making the cut, and then joining back on on college teams. My interest is diminishing. If they don't make some drastic changes, my Saturdays will be looking a lot more open.
