I thought that too. Maybe he wants ND as he sees the writing on the wall...and he comes cheap to be a part of it.

Notre Dame is not likely looking to spend significant money at the RB position in order to add a body and the top tier guys are all super expensive this cycle. This could be a "buy low" guy that Seider thinks he can get more out of.

They love bringing in Nickelbacks in the portal. It’s a position that you want an experienced guy at with a particular skill set and physical profile. Williams is almost certainly going to play that spot in this defense.

DT #1: $1,300,000
DT #2: $800,000
DE #1: $750,000
CB/NB #1: $800,000
WR #1: $1,300,000
TE #1: $600,000
RB #1: $300,000
OG #1: $800,000 (Brunner caliber)
Kicker #1: $250,000
QB #1: $300,000

Total: $6.5-$7.2 million usd

Obviously I'm just guessing, but that's an example of a 10 man portal class for the $6.5-$7.0 million budget I'm projecting. I think it fits all of ND's needs / wants. Assuming ND doesn't get everyone, that's in the range of what they might be looking at.

On a separate point with Bama, based on DeBoer's post game comments, he appears to be completely oblivious to their problems. I realize he's not going to say "we stink and didn't belong on that field," but to say there is a fine line between where they are and being elite is either dishonest or he just doesn't know what elite looks like. After the 2012 BCS beating, there weren't a lot of folks who said "we're right there with Bama." It was clear and obvious there was a substantial gap between that ND team and that Bama team, and anyone who watched what Bama was putting out there this season could see the same for them.

Bama and the SEC generally are just going to be in the wilderness for a bit until the powers that be can get this NIL wild west situation under control and reinstitute a system where the primary leverage comes in the form of cheating.

Williams is off a ACL injury, plays in the very specific Iowa State scheme and is 5’11 200 pounds. I wouldn’t pencil him in to be an outside starting CB at ND. He’ll either have a large learning curve or could be envisioned to play elsewhere.

Forgive me for asking: projecting $7M on 10 dudes in the portal. So…the cap is $21M for ALL SPORTS? ND in other words would use 1/3 of their budget for 10 FB players? I think FB should get the whole budget—it actually makes money—but even if the $21M was just football, ND would only have $14M to spread across the other 90 football players? Ouch. 1/3 of budget on 10% of your roster and the holdovers probably pissed. What a weird time in college sports.

ND has about $17.5MM towards football revenue sharing and roughly $15-$20MM in NIL.

I don’t believe any major program is sticking to a $21 mil cap. Only a few (looking at you LSU) will openly admit that.

I wonder if they would try Gray out at nickel if we have another good outside corner. It seems like it would cover his weakness of being manned up deep while he seems to do a good job with the intermediate stuff.

I don't think Gilliam was the DT that Roberts was referring to because he was already in the portal. Roberts followed up this morning saying that he'll let us know when that player enters.

Player compensation is the product of both Rev Share and NIL. The Rev Share conponent is capped and has to be divided between each school in support of their respective athletic departments. Meanwhile, NIL is essentially unlimited and is designed to supplement Rev Share in order to round out compensation.

So if ND spends $7 million in the portal, it could be the case that 50% of that money comes from the capped Rev Share, while the other 50% comes from the uncapped NIL.

When you hear about the "$21 million" that is strictly the Rev Share pool, not the NIL pool. Somebody like CJ Carr might make $2+ million next season, but a huge chunk of that probably comes from NIL because of how marketable he is, saving more money for Rev Share to be split between less marketable players.

We know, anecdotally, that recruits are often given large signing bonuses from the Rev Share pool, but if thry aren't contributing heading into year #2 they are often asked to massive compensation cuts, with some guys making 1/5th and 1/10th of what they made coming out of high school. All that money then gets funneled to the top of the roster. I posted an example of how Rev Share slots might exist on a $17 million, 85 man compensation chart. It's just one example.
