Not that specific tweet, one of his replies further down from it, tho.

I agree, that's not good. Pete is viewed as the "national" ND writer. While I always prefer professionalism over knee-jerk opinions, there was a lot to discuss here.

During the USC game this week, the entire beat said the game extension was near. What happened to that on USC's side?

USC got scolded by the BIG 10 by trying to sell their game to Netflix. Why would they try and schedule this game in Mexico City?

There are so many lapses in logic that ND could be pushing back on. The smartest thing is to know that the BYU game was in hand when it was clear that USC wasn't negotiating in good faith.

As a side note, I'm interested to see the reaction from that Utah governor (vis a vis the Pop Tarts Bowl withdrawal) after the BYU series was announced and millions of dollars in revenue is going to his state thanks to the ND game.

If you wanna get really tin foil, every day USC drug this out weakened our chance for a viable replacement

Yup - they were setting us up to be embarrassed and ridiculed for having to schedule a G5 school last minute with an already weak schedule. Good on Pete for ripping off the Band-Aid. I wish someone at ND would have the balls to just throw them directly under the bus for how they handled all of this.

The part of this which I think is being overlooked is that USC needs the rivalry with Notre Dame for their brand as well. Without ND, how is USC really any different than Nebraska or Wisconsin... Just another former blue blood which is now a middle of the pack BIG team.

Its insane to me these guys depend on ND fans to put food on the table and they go out of their way to alienate them
This was the best response to Sampson's tweet. Of course, he didn't respond:

Sampson wants to appear like he's being ultra-objective when in reality, he just wants to show how intellectually superior he is to everyone else. It's a shit take.

Well, just 30 years ago USC had a former player who was the most famous man in America

What am I missing, Freeman never actually said "Anytime, anywhere", yet everyone (including our own beat) has latched onto that as this literal statement and proof ND isn't holding up it's end of the bargain.

Unless I'm missing something, the quote was this:
  • Freeman's Stance (May 2025): “It’s pretty black and white for me,”Freeman said.
“You want my opinion? I want to play them every single year.
When? I don’t care. I don’t care when we play them — start of the season, middle of the season, end of the season. I want to play USC every year because it’s great for college football.”

So, people are putting words in his mouth to help their argument sound better. He NEVER publicly said "anywhere".

WTF are we even doing?

Pretty much all other premier programs have beats that are basically the Earned Five Star guys. Our beat is defined by, “smartest and most analytical guy in the room” Pete Sampson. “Old man who doesn’t understand how the internet works” Tim Priester. “Only guy who jerks off to negative news more than EvilleIrish” Tyler Horka

God forbid the media do their job, especially ND’s beat.

I always took the Freeman quote to essentially mean anytime, anywhere. I also do not consider week zero to be "anytime".

Week Zero is also - at least as I understand it - basically against the rules, unless the game is in Hawaii or Ireland or some such, which is dumb for a series like this.
What I do not understand is why they could not have simply played in Week Three or Four. When Notre Dame has (probably quite moveable) games with Michigan State and Purdue and USC currently has no games scheduled.
The Week Zero stuff seemed to come from USC's side of things, and feels like them setting a term they know can't be met as an excuse for blowing up the agreement altogether.

Week zero only exists because the earth is round and revolves around the sun. It's the NCAA making a scheduling exception. USC is 100% using the suggestion of taking the game overseas like it's a reasonable offer. It's not.

Riley has been talking about getting rid of this game for 4 years and now it's ND's fault it is gone, not USC's fault because they, I'm assuming, negotiated in bad faith.

USC had multiple TP recruits on campus today, including Jontez Williams. Was raining all day in LA today, and will continue for the next few days. Have to imagine that dampers the 'live in paradise' pitch.

To be fair Jontez Williams has spent the last few years living in Ames, Iowa. Even rainy LA can seem like paradise by comparison.
