I dont necessarily disagree but what would it have changed really? The play seemed to be moving Bama up to protect them from falling out after a beat down in the SECCCG coupled with a likely BYU loss. The exact scenario that made the most sense occurred and the CFP just said fuck it anyway.

I doubt it would have changed anything, but I also didn’t think the ACC running the Miami game on repeat on its network would have worked.

I think my issue is this: he is currently doing a really good job getting media time and forcefully arguing that the process made us really sad. That’s fine, I guess, but to what end? This season is already lost.

If he sees it has his job today to get media attention and to argue that we got fucked, I don’t know why it wasn’t also part of his job to get media attention and argue that we shouldn’t get fucked in advance. Probably wouldn’t have made a difference, but he’s a really good communicator, would have been nice to have a chance for that communication to make a difference.

Part 2 Clearly happened. I’m more unsure about the first part of your post. The problem is we may have to join a conference as the ACC was the only one shitty enough to give us our current deal. No way the SEC or Big 10 would allow it and scheduling may be too difficult as a true Independent. What’s our real options?

There will always be people who are against change because they're stuck in the past. There were people who were strongly against field turf, a Jumbotron, and countless other advancements at ND. Rockne was an innovator, not someone who just wanted to maintain the past

Big East for all sports besides football... very competitive basketball league, lots of other Catholic schools. So then the problem becomes finding October/November games. Maybe you work out a rotation agreement with the Big 12 to get four games a year in those months and extend Stanford.

Big 12 offered ND a sweetheart deal at the same time the ACC did but we took the ACC one for a lot of different reasons (mainly stability and high academic schools). Big 12 would be over-the-moon thrilled for an ACC style deal with ND.

Maybe Big Ten plays ball with you, but not for football. They already let hockey in. Doubtful for a lot of reasons, but possible.

I hated the idea of us suing but love the idea of us daring them to sue. Let there be discovery.

But I’d kind of be surprised if this wasn’t all subject to confidential arbitration.

I think the only way you convince the Big 10 to do a similar scheduling agreement is to convince them that if you were to join a conference fully, it otherwise wouldn't be the Big 10. It's a hard sell, and you'd have to be ready to join the Big 12 fully if that were the case. I just don't see it, as much as I want to.

Exposing this collusion could destroy the "committee" system. I've said this a bunch of times, but we need a BCS-style computer system for the rankings. For heaven's sake, we were the highest ranked 10-2 team in the AP poll, coaches poll, and all the advanced stat rankings. But we're the fourth 10-2 team in the committee rankings? And randomly drop because of Bama's "gutsy" luck in beating Auburn and its -3 yards rushing performance vs. Georgia? The whole thing was so bizarre and insane that I can't imagine something dirty didn't go down.

I try to avoid saying it's all about the money. But here, it's probably 90% about the money. ND will always get screwed by a committee system where half the members have a financial incentive to keep ND out because they are ADs at schools that will get a payout if an SEC or ACC (or, maybe in the future, Big 10 or Big 12) team gets in but will get nothing if ND gets in. In fairness to the SEC, my understanding is they would accept a top 12 or top 16 field, although I don't know how that would be ranked. Removing auto-bids helps ND because we cannot get one, but it doesn't fix the committee problem.

We definitely can't get a scheduling agreement with the Big Ten, but I do wonder if there is some angle shooting that would work for us to get other sports a home there. They already let us in for hockey. They also let in Johns Hopkins for lacrosse. There is clearly some amount of flexibility with them for non-revenue sports inclusion, I just don't know how far it extends.

For the rumor #2 on collusion, Dan Patrick literally said today during the interview that he has a source that passed along “the secrets always come out from that committee room and ND was set up for disappointment.”

Yes. I'm not thinking about the process to get there. I'm thinking about identifying the best teams, it's backward looking, which is... eh, at best unfair to the "current" team being evaluated, but what we have right now is fucking dog shit. I think it's a professional sport and the sooner everyone stops pretending it isn't, the better. Until stubborn mindsets change, this sport is going to continue to have the same issues most of us dislike. For example, I think modern court decisions have made it impossible to control students changing schools unless the students can either collectively bargain or schools treat them as contractors/employees. Schools can exert control through negotiations/policy in those situations.

All that means congress and that place is going to insert itself into the discussion sooner, rather than later anyways.
