Timing of their big wins and losses probably more than anything else. I think the orginal ranking came right after they beat TN, which looked like a good win at the time so tehy were ranked around 12. Couple weeks later, they beat bama and here we are. If they lost to Texas right before the rankings, my guess is that they would have been positioned a couple spots lower on the original ranking, and that could have made the difference between being in or out.

OU has no bad losses and multiple good wins. Don’t really see it as a battle worth us fighting even if they don’t look as impressive

I'd reconsider what their "good wins" are. Most of them are against overrated SEC teams like Mizzou and TN that have zero wins against P4 teams with winning records. The Bama win is just about the only actually good win they have. And their loss to TX was a blowout, and OM was at home later in the season. Both those losses are worse than ours.

Alabama and Michigan.

Losing by 18 to Texas in what was basically a non-competitive game on a neutral site isn't a bad loss? It isn't just who a team loses to, it's how they lose.

No it’s not. It’s a loss. It’s not a bad loss.

It does seem inconsistent, though. ND is where we're at over Alabama and Miami based off of "eye test," metrics/analytics, and our win streak. OU is where they're at over us for like straight resume reasons. And they got housed by Texas, who is a good team, but that game wasn't competitive. OU's "game control" metrics have to be horrible and they have the second worst power rated unit in the top 12 (their offense) behind only Ole Miss' defense. Totally baffling to me.

This is correct. Same logic also applies to wins — OU was thoroughly outplayed by Bama and just fell backwards into the win. The core conversation nationally regarding playoff selection should be whether OU should be included in the field and not whether ND or Miami will get in — but, ESPN purchased the rights to shape the narrative and that’s exactly what they are doing.

Thankfully, the committee seems to operate outside of that narrative.

I wonder what Alabama's numbers look like if added to this chart. Because if they are better than Oklahoma's, then we should be above Oklahoma, since we were already above Bama. The head to head between those 2 teams shouldn't matter for our purpose, it only did because of when it happened in the season.

It’s gonna be a ranked win whether you like it or not.
Yeah I mean, it's also 100% a product of the B1G being way too big. UM played 3 good teams and lost badly to all 3, and looked average against a lot of bad teams. They're frauds and shouldn't be considered a "good" win

All those fools saying "LOUISVILLE AND SMU ARE 8-4 THEY'RE NOT BAD!"

8-4 in the ACC is BAD. The current conf semi-finalist Duke lost to UCONN. The ACC is a joke
I think this has to be a big factor in the committee's mind. The ACC cannot be a two-bid league this year, especially considering that both of their teams got handled last year. The "brand trust" isn't there.

First it was that Jim Phillips is a ND plant

Now it's Mark Dantonio is a ND sleeper agent

Look at the way ND is carrying themselves and look at the way Miami is carrying themselves. One of those teams is acting like they know they’ll be in, the other is in full blown panic mode
And quite frankly, if the shoe was on the other foot I would be embarrassed to be associated with a month long wailing session. Have some dignity.

But you know, I thought Miami fans had really set a high bar with crashouts this year, but good lord, Texas fans entered the chat and stole the crown. Miami fans at least have a semi-legit gripe at 10-2. Texas fans are delusional and easily worse than the Alabama crashouts last season. I understand fully now why A&M and TT fans hate them so much. The most entitle fanbase in sports easily.

Their response to probably getting left out ranges from "I quit! I'm taking my ball and going HOME!" to "Do you have any idea who my father is?" to "Let me speak to the manager, immediately!"

Ah yes, known big time ND fan Mark Dantonio. He convinced his disciple and fellow subway alum, Pat Narduzzi to lay down and not try against us. I appreciate the assistance of the Italian-American Catholic ND Sleeper Agent Cabal in these trying times.

Can't wait to be done with the Miami crying or at least having some finality to the matter between our 2 teams after tonight.

Their best win is objectively better than ours, but if Navy gets ranked that will be 2 ranked wins vs. their 1 after Pitt and SMU drop out. The remaining wins, especially against common opponents essentially even out in my mind. GC, SOS and SOR are all very similar. Sure they have head to head but if that game was played again, it likely would go very differently at the end of the season vs. beginning of the season, and it essentially was a toss up at the time as we tied the game late in the 4th quarter. Regardless, call it a 50/50 proposition at best for them.

The biggest tiebreaker then is the losses. Ours are to FEI 10/11, theirs are to FEI 32/34. Ours are to SP+ 8/9, theirs are to SP+ 27/30. Sagarin is 6/9 (nice) vs. 21/27. FPI 7/10 vs. 24/29. It's not comparable. Case closed.

i would be really pissed if I was a Miami fan. I don’t blame them

The ACC playoff criteria are a joke. The SEC getting four teams in because none of them play each other is a joke. And they do have arguably the best win of anybody in college football this year.

I get why ND is the target but the reality is that if you wanted to line up the 12 best teams in the country we’d both easily be in.

You’re kidding yourself if you think ND fans wouldn’t be doing the same if the shoe were on the other foot.
