They would be 11 and 12 respectively. The real key is that about Bama and BYU can't win their conferences. That would make things more messy for us.
In a world where Miami is 9 and we are 10, we get left out regardless to make room for the ACC and G5 champ.

*assuming Miami isn't the ACC champ since their odds of evening making the conference title game is very slim.

For those that don't want to click on the article....

Wait, are we really defending Notre Dame here? Hey, somebody's got to do it.

Let's take a closer look at the Irish, who've become the punching bag for every fan frustrated with the committee's rankings.

Right now, Notre Dame is effectively the golfer who wrapped up his round early and is waiting in the clubhouse, hoping no one else makes too many birdies. The Irish are safely in the field, and only a road trip to lowly Stanford is left on the docket.

But as the committee's rankings hold steady week after week, there's been more and more time to debate the merits of Notre Dame's résumé, and when we reach the end of championship week, it's hard to ignore that one team aiming for a playoff bid doesn't actually play in a conference.

So, does Notre Dame really deserve the benefit of the doubt?

In short: Heck yeah.

The Irish have five wins against bowl-eligible opponents -- more than Georgia, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt or Texas Tech.

Both of Notre Dame's losses were one-possession affairs against top-12 opponents. The loss to Texas A&M came down to a fluke occurrence, as the Irish flubbed a point after try.

Notre Dame's game control -- about as good an estimation as we have for the eye test -- puts the Irish ahead of everyone but Ohio State, Indiana, Texas Tech and Oregon.

In four games since Nov. 1, Notre Dame has beaten its opposition by a combined score of 181-42, lambasting Syracuse so badly in Week 13 that Fran Brown might not shower for a month.

Look at any of the underlying metrics -- explosive play rates, defensive stop rates, Jeremiyah Love being awesome rates -- and Notre Dame is as good as anyone in the country.

So yes, we get the more logical debates about Miami's Week 1 win or Alabama's superior overall schedule, but the bottom line is, outside of Ohio State, there's probably no team in the country playing better, more balanced football than the Irish. That probably shouldn't be the only consideration, but as we debate which teams ought to be docked a few points in the rankings, Notre Dame probably shouldn't be at the front of the line either.

Maybe but that was in 2010 & 2012 respectively. Different HC & both of those teams were mid at best. This Miami team actually has a defense. I get that Mario has a questionable record going down the stretch but he’s still a better overall HC than Randy Shannon & Al Golden.

I hope you’re right but I don’t put as much stock as the weather as most ND fans. Plus, Narduzzi is just as bad, if not worse; than Cristobal. My main reason for thinking Pitt gets smoked is seeing what Ash’s D did to Heintschel. He looked like the true freshman he is that day. If Miami can pressure him the way ND did, it could get ugly.
One could also say that now that Heintschel has faced a tough D, he should feel better prepared and his OC can make adjustments to help him.

5 SEC teams are in. (aTm, Ga, Miss, OU, Bama (calm down))
3 B1G teams are in. (pOSU, IU, Ducks)
1 Big 12 team is in. (TT)
1 ACC team is in. (poo poo platter)
1 G6 team is in (see ACC)

That's 11. Paths are pretty clear at this point.

Blow out Stanford and ND is only out if craziness happens

if Oregon loses to WA, we'd likely get them at home in the 1st

I would simultaneously love and hate that. (I live in Eugene and the amount of people I'd have to avoid for at least a month, regardless of outcome, is wild)

Temp is forecasted to be around 32 at kickoff for Pitt Miami. That has to be a little shock for Miami.

I don't think people realize the ACC has no real standing with the CFP committee and hasn't for years. I mean they left their undefeated conference champion out of the playoffs just 2 years ago. Clemson got respect, but the rest of the teams do not get any. The ACC needs ND way more than we need them and if we peaced out I just don't see how that conference holds together considering several prominent members of it want to blow it up anyways.

And Brooks is falling into the same bullshit mindrot. Miami is not being punished for their win against us, their win against us 3 months ago is the ONLY reason they're ranked any higher than like 19 or 20. If you swap their win over ND for a win over some other middling P4 school Miami is not sniffing the playoffs with their "resume." The lesson Miami needs to learn one year is that the season doesn't end on September 30th. There's 2 whole months of football left and in fact, they are probably more important than September.

I'd duck too if I put Indiana in the playoff

From Portland myself, I welcome this with open arms. Some of the biggest front running fans I’ve seen. Plan to drive my Sprinter down and tailgate and watch our boys let Dante see what could have been. But yes, if things don’t go well I’ll have to call in sick for a few weeks

Miami, BYU, Utah, etc should be directing their ire at the SEC. There is no reason that conference should be getting 5 teams in after huffing their own farts all season. If Bama loses the SEC championship game, they should be out so they can get their doors blown off by a mediocre Michigan team again.

Weekly Ari meltdown to plug the podcast.

Every advanced metric (quite literally the opposite of the eye test) has us as a 6-8pt favorite on a neutral field. It isn’t that close. They basically are as close to us as they are to Missouri / Iowa (fringe top 25 teams). Also implies we'd have like an 80% win probability on a neutral field.

How about the panel trying to say Michigan might get a spot in the playoffs if they beat Ohio State? I'd say that is about as likely as an ice cube's chance in hell. I actually hope they win just to get their hopes up to be crushed on selection day.

Sounds like the doctor is ordering Ole Miss to lose their NOON kick on FRIDAY

Release all the pressure heading into the weekend, and just focus on the true task at hand: beating down Stanford.

This is especially rich coming from Ari "Stars Matter" Wasserman.
We win the eye test. We win the metrics. We win in scores against our many common opponents. We also win on talent (#9 in 247's composite talent rankings compared to Miami's #15). Yes, they (narrowly) won the game, and that matters too. But it's not the only thing that matters and it's weird for a guy who has made his whole career out of hyping teams with more raw talent to now all of a sudden be shitting on eye test and metrics.

- Up 24 - 14 on ND, win by 3
- Up 28 - 3 on FSU, win 6
- Lose to Louisville by 3
- Up 20 - 17 on SMU, lose by 6

Miami is going to blame ND for being left out. The reality is if they simply held serve in 4Qs, they would be 11 - 1 with multiple additional double digit wins

Ole Miss is sneaky a fraud - a "quality loss" in a game at UGA that they blew and a solid win at OU (who also isnt as good as people think).

Otherwise they've had the following 1-score wins: Arkansas, LSU, UK, Washington St

OU and Ole Miss are certainly getting the benefit of the doubt as SEC teams. At least OU has had a tough schedule, Ole Miss's is worse than ours. Would love to get them round 1.
